Don't buy chinese shitters, make sure they have genuine Seiko or Miyota movements - Chinese movements lack anti-magnetic coatings and have bad tolerances - they will fail in a few months with regular wear.
>>
>>18629119
Genuine seagull movements are good. My most accurate automatic is a Sea-gull ST2130 which gets -2 spd when sitting on my desk. Keep in mind there's lots of fake Sea-gull movements out there, and those hand-wind tonji movements are complete crap.

My finest shitters. And no, they won't be failing within months or even years because I'm a smart shopper and also the frailty of Chinese watches have been greatly exaggerated.
Get what you like and what you can afford. Read reviews and do the research first. You'll be okay.

Looks like amazon patched my seiko method. You used to be able to buy watches from the japanese amazon site for the yen price, which is lower because the yen is weak, and then get free shipping with prime.

Use one of the Seikos you got with free shipping. Should be fine.

Yeah, mechanical watches run better when they aren't moving around. It gets around -3 to -5 on my wrist. Thats still pretty dang good for a 200 dollar watch.

Generally speaking almost any watch bar a gshock looks good with a suit these days, nobody really cares about strict fashion rules regarding watches anymore. If you are wearing a suit to the office then honestly even a f91w will look fine on your wrist, if you are wearing a suit to a wedding or another similar occasion then honestly just get something from Casio's MTP line or chinese shitter like the addiesdive dune
>>
>>18629572
Thanks. I agree. Most people don't even use the watch they wear.
BTW can we update the sticky? All the prices listed in there are absurdly low. I can't find a Seiko 5 for $80 anymore. They're all at least $200. Is it assuming the prices are secondhand or something?

Is this one an actual metal case or plated plastic? Price point is quite a bit higher than the standard silver casios

I've gotten into arguments with several "watch enthusiasts" that insist that the silver and gold casios aren't plastic.

You're a bot and all you ever post is "you have mental problems". There's no evidence of mental problems in any posts but yours. Sorry you didn't have a dad or never got laid or were bullied in school or live on the streets where people shit. It's not my fault. You need to learn to redirect your hatred toward yourself where it belongs. Then you won't be misdiagnosing those who you are envious of.

I think $150 for G-Shock is already overpriced for digital unless it's the 6500 with the sensor protrusion or something on that level of extra.
I will never take digital seriously unless it's paired with a nice analog, and even then it's not no $500 unless it's like that NASA shit.
Just not a digital guy. Not for more than $40.

I don't have any. I could've, I found the method to do it. Like I said, about a year ago the JP yen was super weak so you could find Seiko watches for like half of what they retail here in the US on Amazon. And you could make a Japanese amazon account and they would ship it to you for free or whatever the standard japanese shipping price is.
Now they refuse to ship to the US, I guess they realized the loophole or someone did it first.

I got this casio a while ago and haven't worn it too much since I felt the strap it came with was kind of a downgrade after getting used to the one on my seiko prospex speedtimer.

I then became aware that there are replacement straps for high end watches and it got me thinking what really stops someone from putting a high end strap on a shitter. I now have a forstner bullet bracelet on my blue casio (MTP1302D-2AVT).

The light sucks though. It really, really sucks.

When Indiglo came out in the 90s I somehow thought every watch would have something like it. I'm surprised at just how few do it. Especially in analogs.
I've had this Timex a while (Just get a WEEKENDER!), well before I started going crazy for watches. And I've taken the gorgeous lighting system for granted.
Fuck "lume". Even on the best watches it's not as good as this. And if it is good, well, you can't really turn it off can you? It might keep you up.

Any experts around tonight who know the answer to this? Why isn't E.L. seen on more analogs? Is it seen as cheap? It seems to work behind several different types of dial. This deep blue color doesn't betray what's hiding beneath. You wouldn't really guess on the white ones either. Why doesn't Grand Seiko have it? They could surely liven it up somehow and justify the markup. Funny how the very nicest watches wouldn't even have lume. Certain situations you have to actually create fire to check the time.
>>
>>18632091
loved my old indigo weekender .
my ecodrive is an upgrade in every other way, but no indiglo is one serious downgrade
>>
>>18632091
Because nice watches don't have batteries and it's viewed as tacky even if they do.
>>
>>18632097
I knew I wasn't the only one. I've got an ecodrive on the way and now I'm already wondering if it'll be less popular than old trusty Timex.

>>18632100
Well, some nice watches have batteries. And I think even a mechanical would benefit from a tiny LED system with a tiny battery that maybe utilized solar or something. You just KNOW those Swiss companies could team up with Japan and create some just awesome shit down that road if they wanted. Hell, someone's doing it. Have to be. There's some nut out there working on his microbrand right now. We don't know what's out there. Normally I'd be on the other end of this argument. I hate new stuff, 'smart' stuff, digital stuff, anything that could be old and wood or iron or analog. But I do wish some of my automatics had a light somehow. And I think it'd be cool as hell if some high-end watch maker shrunk down something and gave us something new. I'd own a fucking radium watch if I could afford one. That is old school. If someone could crack actual lume that worked like that did, or just contain it well enough that we could have it again without radiation worries I'd be all over that.

There could be some kind of 'Bio-watch' that ONLY works when diving and it somehow attracts micro sized luminescent sea swimmers who then flow into the watch and chill out and maybe feed or stay warm or something inside any parts of the watch you want to glow. Like the hands and indices for example.
And not in Avatar, but for real. Someone get to work on my stoned daydream of a glowing diver watch with seafood inside. The think stays underwater too. Like you have a little lockbox you rent attached to a pier piling that always stays below low tide. When you go under you start there, unlocking your watch and brushing off barnacles and slime growing on it. Some kinetic, 'Powered by Ocean' proprietary tech.
If I can dream it...

And this watch I'm looking at it costs $25 more for the 9015 over the PT5000. Weird. Guess it does depend on the brand.
Honestly all that shit just goes over my head and I don't think that difference of accuracy will ever matter much to me.
When I first stumbled on this board everyone pushed the NH35 and that seemed to just be the entry level. But it's about the date wheel. And yet the ones that are supposedly better are not all that better and sometimes they're offered and sometimes they're not. I have been getting the upgrade about half the time, but I don't think it's going to ever be evident to me that a watch has a better movement.
I guess we'll see eventually.

My Citizen Eco-Drive is supposed to show up today. It's 40mm which is the absolute biggest I'll go. I bought it so I can get having a Citizen and having a solar checked off the list.
It's going to wear big too, I can tell.
>>18632091
This is a 40mm and it looks fine on me, but all others have really been pushing it. It taught me about how shape and lugs and all that contribute to how a watch looks and wears.
I'm hoping since the Cit is also round with a silver enclosure that I can pull it off.
The fucker was on sale for $129 though and it's already back to $160. Comparable ones on the official site are over $220. It was too sweet a deal to pass up.
I hope I actually love and wear it. If not it might make a good gift.

I really like that dial. usually when a watch does day at 12, they write the entire name out and bend it into a curve and there is very little in the watch world that triggers me harder than that, it looks like absolute shit.
this way looks cool and the dial is bilaterally symmetrical instead of day/date at 3. I've always preferred date at 6 but the day at 12 thing usually looks terrible. plus the fake guilloche and the indices, it's really nice. shame about the 40 but it'll probably be ok. So I just drop off that misaligned purple thing at the post office and get a quick refund.
Easy as pie.

Now I get to buy another $35 shitter! Pretty cool. That was a really terrible impulse buy anyway. I never should have gone ahead when I wasn't 100%. "One last purchase before bedtime" I believe was how that went down.
That's no way to watch shop. You really can't go wrong with those Tianjin Shanghai ones at that price. But maybe I'll get a San Martin or something since I'm taking the rest of the year off. One more big watch.

>>18632906
And you can't really call them shitters anymore. I have a cardboard box filled with actual shitters. And the Invicta is a certified shitter. The rest are all good to great watches and you don't know anything.

>>
>>18632884
So it's always fucking something. I noticed the second hand isn't exactly flush with the minute markers on the edge of the dial. Shouldn't this be absolutely perfect?

Why the fuck does Jomashop keep fucking me like this? Two Seikos and now a Citizen. Do they just put these on sale because they KNOW there's an issue? Do they just keep shipping them out until some sucker keeps it?

Seriously, is this something that could be fixed by just opening up the watch and making a minor adjustment? I really liked this watch. I don't want to send it back for a refund. Where am I going to get another $350 watch for $130? Or is that why it was $130?

I'm so fucking sick of this. With shitters I don't mind. I expect them to suck. And yet for the most part they haven't sucked. I've had one $2 shitter that didn't work and I'm returning that purple stuff I got tonight. They're even giving me free shipping back to China. Jomashop has made ME pay for returns. Fuck that and fuck them.

Any watch mechanics have advice on what can be done here? Eco-drive should last many years. I just want it to look perfect for those years. Is that too much to ask here?

I'm liking this San Martin. It's really the only style I like from them; never been into divers and I already have a sand dune dial.
This is about $140 after coupons and discounts, making it the cheapest thing I've seen from them yet.
>>
>>18632889
Not to sound like an asshole anon but this whole collection could be consolidated into a single watch (murph or ecodrive) but hey you seem to be having fun buying shitters so w/e
>>
>>18633045
How can they be consolidated? I don't see the logic in that. I like them all. I wear them all. If I only had one I'd miss out on the enjoyment I experience from the others.
How many watches do you have? Are you just a one watch person? Why just those two? Are you the person who always comments "I only like the murph"? So now you just barely tolerate two of my 40 watches?
Thanks for letting me know again. You don't sound like an asshole. But I don't get it. You just like repeating that you don't like anything else I've bought? You need to remind me that in your personal estimation the only one that appeals to you is the Militado? And now the Citizen?

Okay. Duly noted. I can't explain to you why people like to collect things and have different versions of the things, different colors and styles of the things. I used to have Hot Wheels cars and G.I. Joes growing up. I guess you'd have rolled up on your Big Wheel and told me my entire collections could be consolidated into a single Joe (Leatherneck or Snake Eyes) and a single car (that white Lamborghini or the hot rod with flames). I don't think it would be a fun collection that way.

>>18633117
These are the two casios worth buying. Way too many gumball machine watches in here.
>>
>>18633125
This collection is the result of trial and error over the past 5 years. Ultimately I'm going to prune out 50-60% of it and stick with 3 or 4 watches. I have a strict set of criteria on what will determine the final selection. I'll say that any watch that does not have both day and date on it's face is of no use to me. So the Duro will never be a consideration. The 5600 series is a future purchase but it will have to be the new MIP version. Of the "gumball" watches, the WS-1600H is the most useful watch I've ever owned due to it's super robust and unmatched feature set and style. It will likely make the final cut. I may even mod it with a full metal case eventually.
>>
>>18633117
I like your collection, anon.
>>
>>18633133
You should keep the Duro just for variety. Sometimes it's classier to have an analog clock without day and date. Who forgets what day it is anyway? I've been kind of on a minimalism thing where there's no lume, no windows or subdials or battery or complications of any kind. Just a clock.
For a guy collecting Casios I think you should keep all of them. But at least the Duro for variety. I think no watch collection is complete without a little of everything. Gotta have a digital. If you have all digital you should have an analog. Don't prune any of them. What takes up less space than a few lightweight plastic watches? You never know when you might need them.

Don't think there's much you can do unfortunately, you'd need to remove the seconds hand and then place it back and hope it's lined up, which is not that easy. You're probably best off returning it, as much as that sucks. Do they have the option to swap it for another one?
>>

>>
>>18632958
update, temu refunded my order for suspicious activity. very cool!
>>
>>18633332
I read up on it and it just goes with the territory with quartz. I'm not going to fuck with it, I'm not going to return it. Being slightly ahead of each minute marker doesn't really affect anything. It's probably going to be the most reliable quartz in my modest collection. You have to really get down there and stare at it to even notice.
From what I'm learning it's not always as easy as just taking it off and putting it back on better. It's best I think to just leave it be and learn to live with it. This is info posted on microbrand websites FAQs. In this case I got the last one at the $129 price anyway. The box it came in says $350. Otherwise I'd happily pay the return fees to just buy three or four and keep the one most lined up.
I'll ask my jeweler next time I'm in there.

There are a lot of great watches that will fit you. Just don't get anything over 38mm. There's a lot available in 36mm that look good on any wrist. It's all in your head anyway; expectations of what it "should" look like or what people might think. Don't worry.
Back 100 years ago most watches were small. Manly men wore 32mm and shit.
Look at old pics of Hemingway or think of the Pulp Fiction war watch. Those were all worn by real men. Men who knew how to chop down a tree and build a house. And you can tell me those guys would have worn a 52mm Invicta if they could, but I know that's wrong.

These are 34mm. They'd look great on you or me. But there is no "allowed" here. Wear what YOU want.

I'm not sure. They show kind of vague specs on the page and then there could be three different versions to choose from. This is the one I have and the gears are different and it's $11 less. I don't even know what the big difference could be. I just like them and assume more expensive means better. Which is a pretty stupid assumption.
I just found this video of a guy explaining how these were a design from the 70s. So I guess they have since made an even cheaper movement because he one he's talking about (7120) is now the $44 one and the one closer to the $28 he's quoting is "V-2" according to the image.
I don't ever really understand the technicals. I just figure if I'm going to get an inexpensive watch, I should get the best one. And he explains that the 7120 is the same movement they originally used 50 years ago, and you can get original Shanghais on ebay that still work.
It's nice to remind the haters out there of that when they scoff at buying $40 "shitters". There's really no reason to think these won't still be going in 2076 with proper care too.

And besides, they're colorful and fun. I think of watches kind of like how women might think of earrings. They may have a nice diamond set, but they have fucking drawers full of all kinds of fun and funky ones too. I like having a handful of Chinese handwinds that aren't replicas of anything but earlier versions of themselves.

I've got a shanghai I bought for 18€ and I'm pretty sure it also uses the 7120.
The 7120 aka the tongji movement aka the chinese standard movement is an old design that a lot of cheaper chink watches use, some manufacture their own and some buy them from others.
Looking it up it seems that watch uses the 8120 movement, which is a newer one that shanghai made to try to make their watches thinner, but it's not considered as reliable apparently.
>>
>>18633750
Cool, thanks. I'm interested to know what they mean by 'durable'. If I just use the watch from time to time without putting it through shocks or anything I don't imagine mechanical watches are very likely to just "conk out" and fail to keep the time. At least I'm not finding a lot of people ever complaining about the watches I've bought. I hope they continue to do well.
Time will tell. So to speak.

God I love the new seiko 5 designs, but they're so overpriced for what you get. If there was a 1:1 chink copy with a sapphire crystal and better bracelet I'd jump on it, as is I might just pull the trigger on one of these for their full price just for the design.

There are plenty. I posted a bunch in one of the last threads. People bitched for posting shitter options but you guys are asking for them.
You're absolutely correct. Those things start at $130 or so and they have Hardlex and usually pretty lame movements. There are $60 - $100 watches that look near identical and have all the good components.
>yeah, but manufactured in China
Yeah, just like the fucking ones Seiko puts in there, but BETTER.

Here's just one option. There are many more and you can go quartz or mechanical, different sizes, different brands, sterile dial maybe, but they will all have sapphire and usually comparable bracelets. I bought two such Seiko 5s and sent them back for issues. But the bracelet on my Militado Murph was just as good if not better than the Seiko.
In the end I got my Cocktail Time and I love it, but for these other types of watches I'm just not gonna spend that money for the Seiko name.
I don't give a FUCK about all that status shit. I know which watches suck and which are great but just lack a fancy name. Get what makes you happy, anon. Knowing you have superior specs should be enough. You have to get pretty close to read the name on someone's dial.

Were they the old style of seiko 5, with an actual 5 logo, or newer ones with pic related? The newer ones are priced significantly higher but I've heard they're also better than the old models (still not as good as many cheaper chink watches though)
