/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - Artisan's hand edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bick4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Chink mocassin boots have arrived. Decently comfortable out of the box and surprisingly lightweight for how heavy they look. They came with cork-foam-leather topped insole that I might swap with something else. Maybe some thin leather or foam replacement, because it feels like they takes up too much space in the boot.

Hello bootfags. I don’t know shit about boots so can one of you tell me if I can get my boots resoled and if so where? Link related. These aren’t mine but it’s the same boots. They’re the best boots I’ve ever worn but the sole is garbage. I really want to get a new sole and keep using them.

Filson offers repairs. If you don't want to use theirs just call up cobblers in your area and ask them.
>>
>>18643837
I want totally different soles. The ones they make them with are okay not great. These boots are also discontinued anyway.
>>
>>18643847
Then tell Filson or you local cobbler that when you contact them about having your boots resoled. Its just a piece of rubber nailed and glues to some leather, its not rocket science, they can figure shit out.

Glued and probably shit leather, but if you need that very specific look it's probably your only option. If you just want a chunky, black chelsea I'd recommend Grenson.

>>
>>18645133
How much does glued construction matter when theres not going to be replacement outsoles? Is the durability that much worse assuming youre not getting the soles replaced?
>>
>>18645142
Glued construction can just fail easier, especially when temperature and moisture is involved. You can be lucky and have no issues for years or get fucked quickly, it's just a gamble. Nothing to do with whether they can be resoled or not for that.

clearly made by the same miyagi kogyo factory in sendai that makes lofgrens and white labels for most jap heritage brands
the "historic Japanese tannery" that makes the leather is very obviously shinki, since they are the only ones that produce horsehide in japan, other tanneries only finish it and the grain figuring pretty much gives it away immediately
quite a bit cheaper than regular shinki lofgrens but kind of looks like an awkward blocky lofgren-viberg hybrid
good deal, but the design is very uninspired and the smooth nobrand soles probably suck

most of these outfits are just one level above thrown together, which i guess is the point of the video to show that black works more than people realize
but still with black boots you're coordinating the outfit to match the boots, which is the exact opposite of versitility
>>
>>18649016

I've used lacing to finish the fit of a boot/shoe. Same last, different styles, different materials. Ostrich, Shell, CXL.

The under-eyelet cross helps apply pressure at the point where it's needed for the fit of the shoe. The shell pair have molded a bit since the picture was taken, so I now keep my lacing above the eyelets.
>>
>>18649377

thursdays are plagued by major QC issues and their "premium" line isn't any different
the challenger has wafer thin heel counters and the heel is way too high for the last, so the boot is ramped forward

some dude managed to rip through 3 rows of stitching to destroy the pull loop and backstay the 2nd day he got them
that's quality right there

I own two pairs of Whites and they are superior to my Iron Rangers in every single way. There is no reason I'd pick my IRs over my Whites except to just wear them for the sake of wearing them

>>
>>18650334
i think you're falling for the old color inconsistency issues with horween
it's literally the same thing
people would swear color 2 and garnet were totally different and they could totally tell them apart, until it's been confirmed by horween that they're functionally identical and they just renamed some of the shell colors when updating the dyes after changing suppliers
>garnet is way more red and color 2 is more honey colored
same with bourbon and whisky

all the "true browns" have green in them to kill the natural tan shade of cordovan
>>
Anyone have experience with replacing eyelets with speedhooks? Going back to all eyelets is such a ball ache, but some makers refuse to use hooks for some reason. It's not like you even see the very top eyelets anyway, so who gives a shit if they're less elegant?

I'm going to be honest. I don't see the need for anything nicer than those. They're perfect for daily shit, and I wear my two pairs alternating every day of the week. If I'm wearing jeans, I'm wearing those two. I will say that I just got a pair of engineers, and they will be entering the rotation.

>>18650888
that's the thing, you don't "need" anything more than a pair of good red wings, unless you're doing something like firefighting, logging or need a steel/composite toe
if you just need a good pair of boots for working in the garage and riding a motorcycle or whatever, then iron rangers are all you'll ever need

Yo. I am looking for a pair of ankle boots that will serve me well for 3-season travel. This means:
>flights, buses, driving
>walking all day on pavement
>light hiking: trails, forest floor, gravel
>won't look out of place in the city, but also won't crap out on me if I need to climb over a rock
Other criteria:
>can be had in Europe
>not bulky
>can take some beating
>price: up to about €400
I had some very old Swedish army boots (same as pic rel) which more or less fit the score well but were a little more bulky than I'd like and had a pretty dumpy last shape, so I sold them.
Options I have considered:
>RW Blacksmith/Beckman - seem nice, but cost almost $500 and $600 respectively in this shithole
>Moma Tronchetto Male - I like the sole (blake with commando topys), but the heel counter is suspiciously straight
>Atheist Serious Boots - Seems all right if a bit more bulky than needed. More winter-appropriate than necessary.
Any thoughts fellas? Something like a euro version of a RW blacksmith would do well.
>>

Beckman was right on lower edge of the level of smartness I was looking for, so the blacksmiths are right under. I think a pair of chelsea's would also work for what I want but I don't know too much about boots to begin with. I just know I want something that isn't dogshit quality.

The problem with these are:

They easily bend and become loose

the niagara boots are so close to being the perfect indy clone but they just miss the mark, just barely. there's something off about them, something overbuilt.
the fudging on the welt looks out of place and the SPI is too high giving it a dressy look when it clearly wants to be a "work" boot. so many of these new boot brands make this mistake: trying to be too many things at once
and that big wacky 360 degree split/storm welt just doesn't look right. it's too much welt. and the faux moc stitching on the niagara being more rounded just gives the boot too much of a soft look
ultimately the niagara boot tries to be both an indy style work boot AND a dressy style boot but as a result it fails to properly be either
though i do acknowledge that it's the best indy alternative, if parkhurst even still makes it

they have three lines of boots and you need to watch out because the cheapest one is made in india iirc

According to their website the 1880-collection, which includes sedberghs, is made in northamptonshire

Had those and sold them since they were to large for me. Built like tanks, not that sleek at all due to the G-last. In no way even similar to a balmoral boot, like the retard below wrote.
Only gripe, beside the to large-ness, is that the commando sole is a grabble magnet and will fuck up floors and everything else without giving any extra traction. Vibram is better for that.
They are made in England too, they have another similar boot made in India which is 100 euro less iirc.

So maybe size down 1 size? And I meant side profile "sleekness", I know wide lasts can't really be made to look narrow without adding too much empty space to the front.

yeah that'll be fine, they make good boots there
after a quick look it's the "design collection" that's made in india

I have a pair. The leather feels cheap and is the biggest disappointment, apparently even their 1880 uppers are sewn in India and then welted in England.
The last is fine for me. It's roomy, but I'm not slipping around.

They could be cheaper for what you get. I'd recommend buying Crockett and Jones or similar instead. The higher quality is worth it.

Alternatively Yanko from Skolyx. They're about €300. Goodyear welted made in Spain.

one alternative i've been eyeing are these sanders florence boots, same price point as loake and made in england. My only concern is they have a F-last and ship from UK, so shipping will be more expensive and returning will be more difficult than with my closest loake-retailer

really? the only thing i remember about loakes is how unbelievably narrow they were in the toes on their standard F width last

What’s the point? Why even bother? Boots with spikes/studs/ridges/traction are fucking useless. Enjoy slipping in the snow all day.
