Personally not my style of dial (too Marvel-ish to me) but i think those will be popular.

I'd rather have other 1970s inspired dials on that watch, like the gradient brown they have but on their MKII case.

This guy is right, and you all know it.
No one has any counter arguments, only insults and random snobby yapping.
If you want to buy a Seiko that is on the San Martin level of quality, you will have to pay $1k minimum, and likely more.

Chinese brands are not doing too well when it comes to originality, but they do release some good original designs. So if you don't like homages, that exists for you.

I'm not here to say nothing else is worth buying, or that San Martin is the best. Not at all.
But there are people here saying that good cheap automatics don't exist, and that is just wrong and retarded.

They won't admit it though. And they'll accuse your post of being me samefagging. But yeah, they know because they've seen the reviewers come around on all those watches over the last five or ten years if they actually follow watch stuff. The same reviewers who appreciate luxury also appreciate these starter watches, as well as owning both kinds, so I don't get why this community can't also do both.
They shill so hard for brand names and dismiss everything under a certain "level". They should want more people getting into watches but they clearly don't.
Someone asks for recommendations I get all excited and go find and post a bunch because I've had such a great time buying these kinds of watches and have been super happy with them.
It boils down to miserable people who want to stamp out happiness. Which will always be a 4chan issue.

I hate to report this about one of my favorite watches, but it doesn't stay powered for shit. Doesn't seem to last even 24 hours, let alone the 42 you're supposed to get out of the Miyota 8215.
If it was my actual daily at this point I wouldn't have noticed, but since winding all of my autos at once I noticed that the 2 8215s in that case both died before any others, and the Timex died first.
I've taken it out and I'm going to test it on its own and see if I'm right. I don't know if there's anything to do if I'm right. I have the warranty, but I don't know if this would be covered. It keeps good time if you keep it powered. If my experiment shows that it dies only 16-20 hours after a full winding I'm going to have to do something though. Maybe that just means selling it. Just thought I'd share it with the community in case anyone was going to rush out and get one. I hope I'm wrong. It would be fucked up if my $30 Shanghai hand-winders have better power reserve than something like the e-line.
Though since I never uncovered this complaint in my research before buying, it could be an isolated incident and I got a shitty one in need of some servicing. That's what warranties are for.
>>
>>18654182
Top right if I had to choose. Or top left. Despite the better battery life, the bottom ones are too big. Bottom left the numbers are too large. None of those are really my cup though. Buy what you like best. If you really have the wrist for it the bottom right looks best and has the long battery. But 45mm for a square is very large on the wrist. Keep that in mind. And 12.5mm thickness is pretty fucking much for a digital.
I'd probably get a metal G-shock square if I were in those waters. Good luck.

Can someone please explain to me why higher quality automatic watches from pretty much any brand are so expensive?
From what I know, seems like all of them get made by robots, and they use the same common materials as other watches.
So what creates this high price even in brands who have no prestige associated with their name?
What am I missing here?
By the way, I am not talking about super luxury watches here. We are talking about actual robot stuff that costs $2-10k somehow, or even more in some cases.
>>
>>18654435
Micro-engineering and very, very tight design and tolerances, much more so than almost any other kind of mechanical object I can think of, along with many QC and finishing passes on tiny, tiny parts and markers. However, anything you're buying over $2500-$3000 is basically the same quality wise, you're just buying the name/design/heritage at that point. Watches were essentially solved with quartz regulated batteries, all the advances made with mechanical watches have to have exponentially more engineering for diminishing returns. However, that isn't to say that there aren't advances still, the average mechanical power reserve was 40 hours 15-20 years ago and now it's 60-80 hours, which is really nice. Making something with this many small, moving parts that resists shock and moisture for as long as people expect to watch to go between service is a pretty amazing feat, for what it is. If you don't want to overpay for top tier engineering, definitely stick with brands like Longines or Tudor if you want the maximum engineering per dollar.
>>
>>18654438
So are those tiny mechanical objects actually hard to manufacture?
How difficult is it compared to electronics for example?
I am clueless about all of this, but electronics have many micrscopic parts, yet they are often very cheap.
I know I am trying to compare apples and oranges here, but I hope you understand my confusion.
>>
>>18654449
Mechanical costs more to make because they have a lot of interacting, load-bearing parts that all have to be precisely made, finished, assembled, lubricated, and adjusted by hand (or by a pick and place machine operator). A mechanical movement often has hundreds of components all transferring energy physically and constantly in motion, which means tight tolerances and more quality control. Quartz watches push most of the hard work into cheap, mass-produced parts, a battery, crystal oscillator, and integrated circuit, and with a simple low-torque motor which moves the hands with far fewer parts under stress, usually using plastic gears and fully automated assembly because of the more forgiving tolerances. Even though quartz can have small parts, they’re much simpler and the process is more automated and outputs at much larger scale, so the manufacturing cost ends up much lower.
>>
>>18654452
By electronics I meant things like phones and computers.
They don't have moving parts, but they have tiny parts.
Also, how come some mechanical movements are so cheap?
Do those not have anything hand-finished and all that?
How does something like a Seiko NH35 manage to be so cheap, yet it lasts a decade without a service?
I'm just trying to grasp what is going on here.
>>
I'm about to spend $480 to service a broken watch I received as a gift from a close friend 5 years ago, for a watch I could buy brand new for $290. Lord help me. I wish I wasn't such a sentimental person so I could just toss it and buy a new one without regret.
>>
>>18654458
That's why you don't buy shitter automatics.

Automatics should be at last 3 times the maintenance cost.
>>
>>18654457
>They don't have moving parts
This is the salient point, though. They don't have moving parts, which means they don't need to be built to withstand friction and torque, and they don't need to be engineered to fit within a mechanism with low tolerance to prevent damage and malfunction from shocks. Things are pretty simple when you can build them as essentially a brick of immobile components operated entirely by electricity.

>How does something like a Seiko NH35 manage to be so cheap, yet it lasts a decade without a service?
Looser tolerances (which means easier assembly but worse performance), no factory regulation, and less accuracy out of the box. However, because it's made with thicker plates and less parts, it has good shock resistance so it's less likely to be knocked out of whack through mishandling. It's just not very accurate in the first place, if I remember correctly it gains or loses 35-45 seconds a day out of the box, not to mention after 5 to 10 years without service. They don't even get serviced really, they just get pulled out and thrown away, and then replaced with a new one. It also has almost no finishing and it's very thick for what it is, making the watches they're in wear like a hockey puck in my experience.
>>
>>18654459
Yeah, I agree with that mostly, but with this being a gift I can't avoid it.
>>
>>18654458
>>18654459
A movement swap on shitter automatics will likely cost you less than 50% of the watch price.
Therefore, shitter automatics are worth buying. They are just not worth servicing.
>>
>>18654461
I have a PT5000 (ETA 2824 clone) in a San Martin I own.
It is only 3 months old now, but it gains less than 5 seconds per day, it is not thick, and it is quite cheap. A bit more expensive than a NH35, but still cheap.
I do wonder how long it will last. People online say it is a coinflip. Could last long, could break down in a year. I have no clue.

With the price of gold now a days, I think this watch makes a great value proposition.

120g in weight total of the case and band in 18k gold, valued at $120 per gram. You're basically paying $1000 for a Rolex at this price because you can melt the gold and sell the scraps for $14.5k.

Newfag here learning about watches in recent months.
The more I learn, the more it becomes clear to me that there are only 2 categories of mechanical watches, shitter and luxury. The in between stuff is just expensive shitters with excuses.

I have a question for you bros.
When buying a used luxury watch, how old can you realistically go before you reach the point where it has been used so heavily that it is basically a shitter as well?
What is the best kind of watch a poorfag who really likes watches can aim to save up for?
>>
>>18654759
Idk, 60, 70 years, anything more and the materials used are significantly worse. I have 4 60+ years old and they work fine, i was using one as a daily for 5 years. They cost me from 100 to 400.

Did whoreanon the immigrant carwasher from gremany ever buy a rolie? did he get trapped in Japan?
>>
How did WhoreAnon get his name you might ask?
It is not because of prostitutes, as bittercel might suggest.
On this board, the art of horlogy is often playfully referred as "whoreology", a simple, blunt, yet funny, play on words.
WhoreAnon amassed an extensive collection within a very short period. He got watches in luxury, high luxury and ultra luxury categories and earned his true name; HorologyAnon.
Let us not forget this fact in this sea of misinformation.

$1K minimum is really what you need to spend on a watch. Anything else is just pointless. Get yourself that trusted name. Even if you can't afford a new one, you want to be in that club.

there is only one thing that's cringier than actually caring about watches, and that is caring about avatarfags on /fa/ watch threads
>>
Why does this thread hate bittercel so much? He is unironically the best poster we have ever had. Here's my reasons:

bittercel is always brutally honest. He is like water, he will find a crack in your watch and pour in from there. He is the criticism we need. You never get that in watchuseek or reddit, you only get an echo chamber of “nice watch, wear it in good health, champ” bullshit. Not with bittercel, he does not care for your feelings which is why he will tell you the truth. Yes, your watch is too big for you, yes it’s a shitter, yes the lugs look like shit, yes the movement is crap. You, as a critically thinking individual, should embrace this.

We are all protected by anonymity here which is the point of this site. Avatarfags are pathetic going against this. Take reversocel for example; he couldn’t handle a bit of heat from bittercel and immediately fucked off to r/watches as soon as someone wasn’t sucking his cock over his shitters and pens lmfao.

Yes, bittercel may seem bitter at first, but he is the counter force to all this circle-jerking in here. He is harsh but fair. You hold the fact he never posts a watch against him, but that is merely him not taking a side. He is not a brain-dead fanboy to brands (other than Rolex, but Rolex is Rolex). This way he maintains his unbiased position.

And the best part of bittercel? He is always there for you, right here, in this thread.
>>
>>18654907
>>18654908
I don’t know, Bittercel. Spending years in a general where literally every other user despises you is pretty “cringe”. Or spending years in a general devoted to watch when you don’t own any watches or even have any real interest in watches at all.

That sucks, man. My Citizen has that misaligned second hand syndrome. Do they make mecha-quartz + Eco-drive? Most of my quartz have sweeping seconds. Brands like Seiko and Citizen always short you on stuff like crystal and slightly better movements at the $200-$400 range. I'm assuming if you're having it serviced it's under warranty. Though I have no idea about what servicing costs. They make it sound like it's $1,500 minimum, but they only talk about servicing luxury watches. Maybe people will fix cheaper watches for cheaper. Can't cost much to have an NH35 movement replaced if you show up with the watch and the replacement parts.

>>18654989
Hey, they're great watches. And the soft leather straps they come on are some of the best I've seen. After pairing that watch with the tweed, I put its leather on my Presage and now I like it way more. The shiny Seiko strap with the cool release was nice and maybe complimented it better, but I'm happier with this one. I'll wear this watch more now. I had no idea how much difference the strap can make. Now I'm all into finding cool kinds of straps. I might even try making some.

We switched from an utilitarian market to an enthusiast market.

The poor people who bought a watch just to check the time, they are gone, they check the time on their phone.
So what's left are customers who love watches (as jewelry or to display status), and those customers are less than the overall population and can also pay more.

pic semi-related, mid-range is getting fucked, especially Omega.

For $200 nothing is a "shitter". $200 will get you a fuck of a lot of watch from China. SKMEI is embarrassing to look at. They should stick to digital.
I bet Bane would have a pretty cool watch. They didn't have time to get into it though.
>>
>>18655264
I don't see the appeal of those. Too busy. Bottom left is okay I guess. No need for so many dials.

I'm getting real upset because I'm scouring ebay and chrono24 for a particular watch, only to find sleaze balls trying to sell their old watch at or over msrp. Don't they think I'd order it directly form the manufacturer if I wanted to pay full price?

What's with that and where do you buy second hand watches at a fair price/good deal?
>>
Fuck off
>>
>>18655343
The buckle system doesn't make any sense. There are no instructions and no configuration is logical. No videos featuring it or how to wear it. I'm baffled. I've made it work, but it can't be right. It seems like the quick release may have been put on the wrong side.

As for expensive, is that a Kevin O'Leary joke or something?
>>
Why do these threads feel deliberately coordinated?
>>
>>18655367
It's become a culture of greed. You encounter it at every turn. Anyone who can benefit from raping you a little will do it. Because they can. Scarcity or just dumbshits with money will always keep overcharging assholes in business.
I think what you have to do is just be in the right place at the right time, when some junkie or thief or degenerate gambler has a very nice watch they desperately want to sell for cash.
As SOON as anyone else gets to it they will look it up and squeeze every dime they can like some pawnshop huckster.
You gotta be the guy there when the desperate person needs the money.
>>
>>18655372
Probably because you're mentally imbalanced or something. Who would be coordinating what?
>>
>>18655373
Or hit garage sales. You can still find older people who just want to clear out loved ones' possessions quickly rather than price things competitively. People who don't know what things are worth and don't live online. But that means getting up early and traveling to these places and talking to people in person, which some folks are just not into.
I love socializing with people and finding deals, but not getting up early.

Do you bros have any preference between 3hz and 4hz movements?
Does it matter to you?

4hz is supposed to be more accurate, and it has a smoother sweep, but I've heard 3hz can have better longevity and bigger power reserve (in a similar price range).

Not for another year or so. I really don't have any new watches that would interest me, at least on the affordable side of things. Well there is one, but it's hard to find in good condition.
