So what's actually the verdict on drinking whey protein on an empty stomach? Will it really just get metabolized for energy if you don't have anything else in your stomach, or will it contribute to muscle growth/maintenance?
I'm doing keto on a pretty strict cut right now (1800 kcal a day, BW 228 at 6'2" height) so a pretty significant portion of my calories and protein come from my post workout shakes which are 1.5 scoops of protein and 8-12 oz of whole milk. Am I just wasting my time if I drink this on an empty stomach?
(Also yes I'm aware milk has lactose i.e. carbs in it, I'm tracking my macros and I still come in at under 45 g/10% calories of carbs a day)

Supposedly there's a huge insulin spike.
So drink it after you work out to capitalize on that.

I do get people who drink protein shakes and smoothies. Not only do they sound absolutely disgusting, but they're just thick (and sometimes sludgy), bad-tasting carbohydrates in a bottle. And who honestly needs that much protein? What's the point? Just eat some tuna. It tastes way better and -- spoiler alert -- its way better for you..

Dont*

Fish, unless it's sushi, always smells like cancer to me.
I understand that it's incredibly healthy but as I go to take a bite the smell hits and I feel like gagging.

IDK, someone who's going on a cut and doesn't want their muscles to eat themselves because your body preferentially metabolizes endogenous protein stores before fat?
Golden rule is 1g protein per pound of lean body weight, my DYEL friend.
>bad-tasting carbohydrates
My protein powder is 25g of protein for 120 calories per serving i.e. over 80% protein by calories content.
>Just eat some tuna
I seriously hope you're not eating tuna every day, my soon to be mad as a hatter friend

IDK I've heard bro science (on here) that whey protein will "oxidize" or some shit like that and just be used for energy instead of being taken up by the bloodstream.
But now that I type it out like that it does sound dumb as fuck.

Good point, and thanks, my GW is 210 so I've got several more months of this misery to go.

Whey is cheap garbage that will harm you. Only eat beef protein isolate from redcon.

yes, that process is called gluconeogenesis. it's normal to have worries like this but your body would have to be REALLY depleted to start metabolizing your muscle for energy.

breaking down fat cells or even glycerol into energy is much more efficient, and therefore will be prioritized by your body unless you're like starvation-level depleted.

so don't worry about the protein being used as energy. your body will only use it as a very very very last resort :)

Understandable. High-protein sweet treats always gave me diarrhea, so I shouldn't have made such a close-minded post

>Thread about whey protein
Why hasn't the one anon posted in this thread yet? You know exactly who I'm talking about
>>
it will pass into your gut half digested. you will bloat and have gas and then shit it out. that is why athletes and pro-bodybuilders do not drink whey shakes even they get them for free. they just eat real food. which is what you should be doing.
>>
>>74228420
>muh golden rule
did you read that on the back of protein container? shouldn't be hard to eat 150grams of protein from real food anyways.

>45g+ of carbs
>ketosis
You're not in ketosis. I don't know why you do that diet, but if being in ketosis is the goal, then you need to readjust and buy some keto pee stripes to check.
