/csg/ - Combat Sports General

Discuss training or fighting Muay Thai, Boxing, BJJ, MMA whatever you want.

Haven't seen a general on this before so fuck it, want to try.

Icebreakers:
1 - What are you training? How long have you been training?
2 - Do you fight? Any fights upcoming or how was your last one?
3 - What's your training plan look like?
>>
>tfw found out that my BJJ instructor is bullying my dad at work
Should I shoot the guy?
>>
>>75352692
That's fucked, but my initial mental image was the instructor walking into some guys shop every other day and randomly judo flipping him.
>>
Considering starting training as a hobby. Between boxing, sambo and judo, which one is easiest to get into and has the less risk of injury ?
>>

1. These days back focusing on striking after an 8 month detour into jiujitsu. I loved it but I put 11 years between boxing, karate, and muay thai before that and feeling my striking slipping away was absolutely unacceptable.

2. Nope. I'm in my mid 30s and don't care to condition for more than 4-5 rounds. I prefer to keep up with lifting because no matter how well you strike you might still get thrown around if you stay victim weight.

Push Pull
-Upright rows, incline chest flyes, and tricep pushdowns for ascending sets of 8 then sets of 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 at top weight.
-Facepulls, bicep curls, and reverse curls for ascending sets of 8 then sets of 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 at top weight.
-Weighted knuckle pushups for ascending sets if 12 then sets of 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 at top weight.
-Cable crossover pulldown ascending sets of 12 followed by sets of 12, 14, 16. 18, and 20 at top weight.

Legs Push
-Overhead press ascending sets of 2 followed by sets of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 at top weight.
-Weighted pistol squat ascending sets of 8 followed by sets of 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 at top weight.
-Db clean and press alternations for ascending sets of 4 (2 on each side, once supine grip with core rotating into it like a shovel hook, then once neutral grip with an oblique crunch behind it to reach high overhead) then a single set to failure with a weight that allows <4 minutes of continuous work.
-Landmine endurance work for lower body alternating and integrating core rotations, oblique crunches, side lunges, unilateral presses, and boxer squats to failure with a weight that allows <10 minutes of continuous work.

Pull legs
-Weighted pullup ascending sets of 2 then sets of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 at top weight.
-Wrist rotation ascending sets of 12 then sets of 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 at top weight.

You're gonna get hurt no matter what, it's not a matter of "if" but "when". If that's not for you it's ok, but don't get into it trying to totally avoid it.

With that said I picked up boxing a year ago and love it.
>>
>>75352918
All of them will get you injuried, but with different types of injuries

If you don't hard spar you'll never get hurt boxing. The worst that will happen is a rolled ankle, which you're more likely to get shooting hoops.

>Icebreakers:
>1 - What are you training? How long have you been training?
BJJ in the northeast from a guy with a Wikipedia page. I wrestled high-school and college. Switched to BJJ trained off and on probably 8 years in the last 20.

>2 - Do you fight? Any fights upcoming or how was your last one?
Used to compete in NAGA. Might come back and do executive level.

>3 - What's your training plan look like?
Train and roll 3x a week and do a PPL on different days. Light jog on Sundays if I feel like it.

>Question 4: If you compete in grappling, what gear are you on?
200 test/200 eq high cruise
>>
>>75353366
>Never get hurt
Lots of people don't pull punches as well as they think they do. And noses break under a lot less than full power.
>>
>>75353366
I was going super light in sparring yesterday and literally broke a dudes nose because I blocked like an idiot and he walked his face into my elbow. Boxing is still a combat sport, shit is going to happen no matter how careful you or others are.
With that said, I agree that the relative RISK of injury is lower vs something like rolling. A lot more variables and points of failure there.
>>
>>75352679
Been training on and off for about 5 years but spent the last 2 years training consistently in Uechi Ryu, Kyokushin, and Muay Thai

Wish I could but I have no idea how to get into the scene

I mainly lift to maintain my physique and every couple days ill do conditioning training; heavy bag, makiwara; I used to spar with these guys i met at my local gym
>>
>>75352679
What's the best striking martial art to get into in your 30s? I'm 29, a couple months off 30, and I've wanted to start doing some combat sport for the longest time. I think Muay Thai, Boxing or Kickboxing are quite amazing! I understand though that as a noob and at my age, some things might be better than others.

Any suggestions /csg/? (I've suffered a recent bone bruise on the head of my femur)
>>
>>75352679
How to get more ass on my front push kick and front hook?
>>
>>75353922
Boxing is ALWAYS king since it focuses on the most basic and instinctive strike: punches
>>
>>75353046
Punching power is shoulders and chest besides the core and legs aspect, arms only help if you're doing Anderson silva shit. You wanna have a good power clean imo for crispy kicks and just be as Arnold like as possible to have heavy hands.
>>
>>75353977
Yeah I feel like my style is crippled because I didn't focus on hands enough when I started. I'd wanna do kb first, then boxing and fuck grappling besides like mt/sandou where it's realistic.
>>
>>75353948
Rotate your hips
>>
>>75353977
>gets crippled by a singular leg kick
nothin personnel golden gloves nigger
>>
>>75354003
Unless you are thinking of competing in mma why should you care?
>>
I wanna start Muay Thai on january (not a new years resolution, the following months are just loaded with work for me) but atm I have zero conditioning. Wonder if I should try to cram some of ot, or just wing it and hope MT training alone will take care of it.
>>
>>75353948
You need to push your hips through on the teep for maximum power. Conversely, you need to shift your weight on to your back foot during lead hook. Also focus on the rotation and just use your arm as a dumb lever
>>
Might sign up for MMA debut in February. Wish me luck.

i need some encouragement
>been doing K1 kickboxing for years
>never got my shit together, 27y/o incel neet, mentally ill
>never had a fight due to my incapability to commit
>recently hardly show up to training cause i still have social anxiety just saying hello to people
>can hold my own in sparring against fighters but progress only very slowly or stagnate due to irregular training
this is the only good thing i do in life and i'm starting to lose it again despite not wanting to.
i don't know how to get out of this rut..
>>
>>75354098
>MUH CONDISHUNS
You're cut from the same cloth as my 600lb life retards. Stop making bullshit excuses based on made up and/self-diagnosed nonsense
>>
>>75353922
I'm 39 and got back into muay thai a few weeks ago. You'll be fine.

Get the bone bruise checked out though. I had one in my foot a while ago and it took like 8 months to be pain-free
>>
>>75354098
>muh social anxiety
sorry to say but there's no cure. the reason people have it is simply because you didnt expose yourself enough to social situations. the saddest thing is that it's all in your head. stop thinking so much about it and get out of your own head. just plan out the times you'll go and just force yourself to go. the only way to get out of a rut is to brute force it
>>
>>75354739
should i feel bad about being basically a mute in the gym? people know me and sometimes try to start conversations even though i awkwardly kill the conversation ASAP. i just want to train and get tf out.
>>
>>75353922
I'm in my mid 30s and picked up boxing last year. I'm not expecting to ever be good enough to do fights because of my age, but the difference in my cardio, build, endurance, and punching power is insane. I love it.

>>75354054
Go do sprint intervals and jogs right now. Build up your conditioning because that WILL be your first, and hardest bottleneck.
>>
>>75354848
No, no one cares. They may not invite you out for beers but sounds like you don't want that anyways so who cares.
>>
>>75355487
i feel like there is a very minor social part to it though. usually the dedicated guys will exchange some feedback to eachother after sparring and so on.. i guess im overthinking it and being too perfectionistic about it.
>>
>>75355525
I'm not gonna spend time swapping feedback with someone who doesn't say anything and isn't reciprocating. You can have one or the other man, and it doesn't matter which, but you can't have both.
>>
>>75354848
why not engage a little bit? are you scared of these interactions?
socials skills are something you train. these small interactions are light weight and doing them will make you feel more at ease in the future.
>>
>>75352679
Bump. Reminder Ali got completely destroyed by leg kicks in a fit that was specifically engineered to make him the victor and avoid injury to him.

The standards for Muay Thai grading are higher than getting into the NSW police force.

I hope to God you're referring to the dev day fights before you can actually compete as an amateur
>>
>>75352679
ONE makes UFC look like a joke.
>>
Shotokan or Kyokushinkai, which way white man?
Has anyone ever been to okinawa to train karate? I would like to go there one day
>>
>>75358280
The former is pyjama tag and the other is full contact*

Not really a question
>>
>>75354098
WTF is "K1 Kickboxing"?
>>
>>75358393
Kickboxing with some specific competition rules.
>>
>>75358305
Shotokan is controlled contact. You can ko your opponent only when striking the abdomen, while strikes to the face are allowed but cannot be "lethal". Kyokushin has totally banned punches to the face while kicks are allowed.
They are different but its still the same discipline, dont be disrespectful
