Is cornbread a cake or a bread? I've made a 1000kcal meal for bulking season that's chilli and cornbread but the cornbread ingredients seem very cake like. Is it meant to be a dessert? Do Americans eat this as normal bread?

In my opinion, it's a treat. Fat fuck southerners probably don't see it the same way

cornbread can become pretty sweet depending on region and recipe, if you don't want sugar then there are plenty of unsweetened cornbread recipes, or just make some hoecakes which are easier

never had it before but always assumed it was a cake

It's cake, but not a dessert. Its served in small portions as a side for a savory dish, like your chili for example.
