Is it normal to struggle to increase push up reps? I'm 240 5'7 and have been doing push ups and sit ups for a year now. I'm up to 100 push ups and 250 sit ups a day. Although my body has drastically changed in my chest and shoulders/traps, I haven't noticed much of a difference in my triceps. I've been stuck at twenty reps a set for quite a while, while I have increased from 15 to 40 reps a set of sit ups in just a couple of months. I do angle my elbows 45 degrees directly under my chest when I do push ups. I've been stuck at 20 reps a set for 6 months now. What am I doing wrong? sadly I strained my rotator cuff friday so now I'm just trying to learn while I let it heal. I work out 5 days a week.
pls help a fellow anon
>>75478667>240 5'7Surely this was a typo, right?
>>75478754no I've been an athlete my whole life and played high school football. I stopped working out for years I'm 27 now I was 180 about 2 years ago and 310 right before COVID. My weight fluctuates quite a bit
>>75478754thats tge problem. doid should be like 160 at that height. he woupd soon 100 rep on push ups in a set. maybe hes going too deep or using too wide grip if triceps doesnt change.
>>75478807what do you mean by too deep? I touch the ground with my nose as well as my upper chest. The angle is right under my chest elbows pointed at a 45 degree angle. I've always struggled doing push ups even in my high school athlete days and now that I think of it I never improved on them even back then
>>75478667You need to worry about losing weight nigger. 240 at 5'7" is insane, and don't try to act like you're just extremely muscular lol
>>75478818Not him, but you should have a 90° angle in your elbow. If you do full rom push ups, the reps and your shoulders will suffer a lot (but the carryover to bench is better) after some time.Anyway, here's your answer: Take a week off, then do the following: 1 max set of push ups. Note down that number. (say, 31) Now half that number, rounded down (15) . This new number (15) is your new max, you will do 3-4 sets of 15 push ups, 2-3 times a week. After 4-6 weeks, re-test your now improved max push ups (will rise pretty fast, probably 40-50).Then repeat all this until you hit, I dunno, 100? per set. Won't take a year. Careful of overtraining though, it's possible even though this workout routine isn't hard at all.Source: Chinese Sanda national trainer I had some contact with in the past. Worked well for me, I went from 30 to 120+ push ups per set after like 3-4 months or so.
>>75478824lmao like I said I've fluctuated from 180 to 310 in the last 5 years. And I have a four pack, pretty muscular
>>75478995So you're a bodybuilder? Post body, 240lbs with abs is huge for someone that's not a manlet
>>75479039>>75478995Not to berate you, Im just genuinely curious. I would think you would bench at least 3plate at that size and pushups would be effortless
>>75479039nah I'm not a bodybuilder but sit ups and reverse crunches for a year can do wonders over a year. I'm pretty sure 5'7 is considered manlet territory in america
>>75479069I was benching 2plate as a freshmen 14 year old in high school football but I haven't done it in a while. even then I was struggling with push ups like I do today. I'm gonna try what the guy three posts up said to do, hopefully it helps. I've just never been able to improve my triceps at a noticeable pace for some reason
>>75479079Do them with a closed fist, off of your knuckles around shoulder width. You'll be forced to setup properly or your hands will wobble
>>75479087thanks man, I'll give that a try. Ive never noticed anyone else who works out struggle to prove their triceps as much as I have.
>>75479091to improve*
>>75479091Yea dude just do them so palm side of your fists facing each other and just keep your arms tucked more instead of thinking of some arbitrary angle. You'll see when you do them like that, it forces you to push straight through your fist. I recommend doing them on a carpet or rug at least til your knuckles get used to it lol
