I have been going to a kickboxing/MMA gym for 7 months and I'm doing various techniques lessons, spars and had the opportunity to have some fights, I found that I'm improving in terms of techniques, explosiveness, cardio etc.. but when it comes to actual spars & fights I found that I get subconsciously limited ; after a bit of pondering I found that it may due to the fact that when fighting I get scared too much of :

- About potentially dying
- Getting permanently injured
- Hurting others to the point potentially permanently injure them.

Don't get me wrong, my goal is to not be "that full egotistic guy" that no one wants to spar with or be a edgy wanna be tough guy, I'd like to test that theory and get beyond those fears because I think that it's brindling my potential.

While of course the obvious answer to those will be 'When you're boxing you're going to have to punch / getting punched" "People won't kill you in a sparring fight", I know but yet the emotions still lingers, I know it's natural but I'd like to learn to shove them aside and go beyond them, because in a real fight, the consequences / pain will be there and I can't really afford getting scared over that, ideally I'd like to take care of this issue before that happens.

Any advice for this ?

I'm gonna bump your thread, but I can't help you, never fought a day in my life.
Sorry bro.

Sorry, the only way is to fight more until you lose the fear
That's what I've been told

Though some people simply dont have the "killer instinct"

Either you're talented and have a good teacher, or they're throwing you into fights before you're ready. In my experience (~20 years of ful contact martial arts) it's rare for people to be able to fight after less than a year. Sure, there's some exceptions, and I've had a few students who were ready after only some weeks, but that's extremely rare.

Anyways, for your main question: I'd recommend challenging someone way above you in terms of skill. Tell them outright that you don't expect o win, but want to see how far you can go, and basically invite them to play with / torture you.
If you're anything like me, or any of the people I've trained (and a small portion of others I've trained with), you'll soon reach a point where you completely understand that you can't win, and that advancing further will just bring you pain. If, at that point, you push through, accepting that you will lose and just trying to continue as long as possible, you'll lose the fear. In addition, this feeling of continuing in the face of certain pain / loss is among the best feelings you can have. At least without chemical aid.

When I meant fighting, it's more like advanced sparring, or just 1 on 1 between the club goers.

>I'd recommend challenging someone way above you in terms of skill

The irony is that I already do it, except that it happens no matter skill level i'm against, I tried to speak about it with my teachers only either / to get misinterpreted and get a lecture on "bro you're here to spar not hurt other members", "bro the best thing in a fight is to run away" I mean I fucking agree with them, but they don't really wanna push it further through and no way that I can ask the others guy I'm training "dude let's fight to the death so I can learn to go berserk dude trust me lmao" maybe I'm in a club with the wrong mindset ?

>accepting that you will lose and just trying to continue as long as possible, you'll lose the fear. In addition, this feeling of continuing in the face of certain pain / loss is among the best feelings you can have

Isn't the problem that it's performance anxiety and that I'm putting too much pressure to win because in a real fight the consequences would be real ?

Ty for the reply dude, would like to hear more on this

That's just normal sparring. If it was advanced, you'd be a veteran fighting three beginners

I'm a former fighter with 5 wins 0 loses. and when I tell you, I used to get fucked up on the regular in my gym. it was embarrassing. what you need to do is keep fighting more experienced people. mentally you may have these thoughts but your body remembers. you may spar thinking "I'm going to get jabbed in the face" and it happens 5 times. but the next time it happens 4, and then the next time you realize your partner starts his combos with two right jabs into a straight. your understanding goes deeper and then your body does the rest.

even the best had fear, Tyson used to cry before fights cause he was so fucking nervous. anxiety is natural when you are about to enter into a situation where emotion is really not your motivation but surviving is. the best thing you can do is just say fuck it and dive in head first and pray you survive, and if you can't do that....maybe combat sports aren't for you.

>0 fighting experience apart from high school locker room bs and a few bar fights in college
>fraternity brother/lifting buddy invites me to go to his mma gym
>meet him there after work
>going to do some rolling
>get paired up with some “””black belt”””
>manlet with a bunch of tattoos and shirt that says “GIRL DAD”
>literally pick him up and hold him
>he tries to kick and wiggle out like a toddler throwing a tantrum
>literally just holding him down
>nothing he could do to stop it
>finally yells "OKAY GET OFF!"
Gave me a lot of confidence and made me realize bjj is a meme. Our kids go to the same school so I see him around and jumpscare him as a joke to make him flinch but he’s a pretty cool guy. I call him 'Get Off' now as a joke to his wife lol.

seconding this. I wish I had the money to join my local boxing club.

A lot of it is a “you have it or you don’t” type thing. A lot of top mma fighters, and I mean guys who are like top 5-10 in the world, seamlessly transitioned it being able to kill someone in the cage and also being willing to die for victory. It’s a competitive, primal urge to both win and dominate their environment and validate themselves. It probably amounts to a certain level of psychopathy/narcissism to be able to do that. In terms of lower levels it’s just basic ideas like pushing yourself, wanting to compete to win, etc. look at guys like Jon Jones, Mayweather, GSP, Fedor, etc

Basically you need to get cracked a few times to realise it isn't the end of the world.

t. Got dropped at training last night, white flash buzzing sound. All good today.

Make peace with death

Protective gear and a sparring partner who isn't a turbo retard

A sparing partner who isn't a turbo retard

None of it is "that thing" retard. Psychology is 100% moldable

Yup, the more I learn about how the world works the more I realize that emotions are literally a meme. Jon Jones is >>>>>>> any other fighter on the planet and he literally never makes eye contact with opponents before the fight.
Retard NPCs would interpret it as "hurr he's afraid lol xDDD" but in reality it simply doesnt fucking matter
