I want to go to a boxing class this saturday
What am I in for?
>>
>>75480060
Not much, should just be drills, bag work and maybe some pads, maybe some gay fitness thrown in too.
>>
>>75480063
Will I need my own gloves and wraps?
It's just a test class
>>
>>75480087
Seriously, is it a boxing class or a boxing gym?
>t. been to and trained in both, not someone skilled or profoundly experienced in boxing tho
>>
>>75480060
Probably some mcdojo shit, unless you meant an actual gym, rather than a one-off class.
If it's proper training, it'll be one of these two:
>getting your ass handed to you by someone only using footwork and jabs
That's how I start training fit people, too. well, if I'm training them for unarmed combat only. Great at making newbies understand that it's not about learning dozens of techniques, but about getting good at them, and that knowing a single move can already give you a massive advantage.
Downside is that some people will quit after being shown just how weak they are.
>basic footwork and striking jabs and straights at a non-moving target (mitt or bag)
This is the softie approach, and people who start training beginners like that are often not the best teachers, but make the most money since it doesn't cause people to quit as much.
>learning one move (footwork, jab or straight) and repeat at infinitum
That's the oldschool version. Makes people quit even more efficiently than beating them up in the first class, but when it's coupled with a good trainer and a motivated student, it produces the best results after some time.

Gym
It's not a boxercise class
>>
Redpill me on brain damage bros. Is it a real risk when sparring?
>>
>>75480184
no
>>
>>75480157
how do i tell if my gym is triying training me or making sure it is not too difficult so i dont quit?
>>
>>75480184
Long term yes
Short term only with concussions and it would depend on the quantity and severity

All I'll say is here was the two routines of the two gyms I went to:
2 Hour Uni boxing class run by local angry Russian/pro boxing trainer:
–15-20 minutes just running in a circle, last 5 doing stretches/light exercise
–5minutes sprints
–30 minutes conditioning – basically hell for a fatass like me, given the trainer believed in training his fighters to have exceptionally strong cores and legs, rather than just be hunks of upper body muscles
–break (thank god)
–20-25 minutes drills – usually basic: series of jabs, hooks, then uppercuts or something (J,C,LH,RH,LU,RU) then actual combos like cross and slip inside (keep the hands up!), roll right, cross again – something like that
–5min. break
–sparring – DON'T BE A DICK – ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS LIGHT
–last 10min. light exercises and stretches
Note: actual pros would be in sweatsuits and training on their own in the ring in the coach's actual boxing club when I went for a few sessions there

I would say the last gym I went to this spring was more like:
–jumprope while waiting for coach or assistant coach
–10-20min. running and stretching
–40min. conditioning
–break
–40min. heavy bag work then drills (20min. drills then sparring for advanced boxers)
–10-15 min. exer. and stretches

I naturally brought my shorts, shoes, wraps, gloves, mouthpiece, and headgear for these. On the other hand, I went to a boxing class and did "boxing" i.e. punching a water bag however the fuck I wanted inbetween doing exercises like jumping jacks and like partner cable whatevers all while wearing the gym's given oversized gloves and no wraps. They said wraps "weren't necessary" and too "difficult to wear during the exercises"

So, pick one.

Even with protective gear?
>>
>>75480259
the training is different if you want to fight?
>>
>>75480271
Yeah
If anything it would be worse long term because the headgear allows yoi to get hit more
Kinda how american football is worse than rigby for the brain because of the gear

Not OP but thank you

They are going to make a circle around you and you have to fight them 1 by 1.

>>75480063
Pretty much this for beginners. Most gyms are affiliated with USA boxing so you would have to sign up for that to do anything more than light spar. In euroland there are probably equivalent organizations.

>>75480259
This is what an intermediate class looks like

>>75480120
A boxing gym usually just does boxing classes. Pretty rare in my area to have dedicated boxing gyms that have open workouts. There used to be more but a lot have gone under.

This is what my local boxing gym does. Basically just HIIT regiments 3 times per day and you pay $200/month for it.

I just realized you wrote explicitly: "the training is different if you want to fight" and "it's not a boxercise class"

Two things I would say:
–you're only there as a first timer. I doubt you're even going to spar. if you do, I doubt it'll be enthralling (other than the idea you're in the closest thing to being in a fight with a stranger) but remember it will not be the positive, happy go lucky, you destroying a dude with all your brain Jiujitsu. It's possible you will get your ass beat, stung, or sat down.
–but just keep going. martial arts is a journey. I personally don't buy into Sam's idea that boxing is the ideal combat sport – or maybe it is? –but just keep going. go once. love it or hate it, keep going. if you don't like the gym or the coach isn't great, you can change the gym. if you want to quit martial arts, that's on you.

I may be mistaken in assuming you're OP but if not, OP, how expensive is the monthly fee of this gym? No flare, "boxing is a poor man's sport" kinda gyms are maybe maximum $40/40€/mo. If it costs more than that, there's other gyms and/or other combat sports. $200/mo. is for suckers.
>>
>>75480434
I'm not american
4 classes a month is $35
>>

>It's possible you will get your ass beat, stung, or sat down.
why people bring this up all the time? i know. i want to get mi shit caved in. i want fight i dont want to do cardio
>>
>>75480060
>What am I in for?
nothing. you should not even try sparring for months until you get conditioning, learn the concepts, some basic footwork and combinations, and most important how to cover up and protect yourself, otherwise its straight to dainbramage town.
