But weightlifting was already an olympic sport and there were professional "strongmen". In 1889 Sandow caused a spike in interest on weightlifitng when he travelled to England and defeated Sampson there.
But most men who were physically active would probably practice some kind of sport like cricket or football.

I remember reading in a EM Forster novel, I think it was Howard's End, the characters were eating at a bodybuilder's restaurant in one scene and I wasn't sure what those were or what they served
