No nigga YOU have no idea what stoicism is. Pic related is stoicism in a nutshell.
>>
>>75725429
stoicism is about caring about what you can actually control and trying to improve those parts of your life, your body and strength are some of the most controllable parts about you, youre like those retards who see one nietzsche quote and base his life off of that while calling himself a nihilist
>>
>>75725429
That's not stoicism, the rationale is totally foreign to stoicism. That is utilitarianism, because he's balancing his own unhappiness with the happiness of the thief.

Stoicism says if someone stole your bike and you can't do anything about it, not to fret about it but focus on what you can control. In this particular scenario, he can buy a fucking bike lock or something, so the stoic would say I could have bought a lock and I should have, so I will do so in the future so as to control what I can about my bike getting stolen.

You fuckers don't know anything about anything.

Literally not stoicism. You're describing some sort of extreme fatalism or something.

antisemitism
>>
>>75725441
You're superimposing enlightenment rationalism onto stoicism and I don't know where this retardation comes from. He is a stoic. He has altered how he reacts to his situation to curb unhappiness per epictetus and Aurelius. This is the perfect embodiment of stoicism and that bothers you. Instead of letting it bother you why don't you just change your perspective so youre not upset. Oh yeah because it's retarded.

Because you've never read Aurelius or Epictetus. The rationale of stoicism is exactly as I describe, and yes it is rational.
>>
>>75725441
>the stoic would buy a lock
No nigga the rationalist would buy a lock. Find me any writing literally anything from Aurelius or epictetus that even remotely suggests responding rationally and in a precautionary manner to being wronged.
>>
>>75725486
You are a stupid dude. Buying a lock is within the power of the will.
The rationale here >>75725472 has nothing to do with the utilitarian "oh well the thief is happy" tardation.

No nigga you've never read either. Bike stoic is the perfect example of stoicism. Can't control a situation? OK. Accept it and move on. That is the embodiment of stoicism. It's a retarded philosophy if for no other reason because it is incomplete. The equivalent of ignoring the problem or dissociation. Stoicism is not a rationalist philosophy especially since it denies emotions like anger, again out of helplessness. No point in getting angry over something I can't do anything about right? WRONG! Righteous anger can spark action against injustices. Is it the appropriate response every time? No of course not, but then we're delving into rationalism again. Stoicism instead goes the route of pic related. What is this philosophy as it pertains to gains?
>gains consists not of having great strength and muscles, but in having low goals
Is this/fit/? No it's /DYEL/
>>
>>75725175
>>
>>75725489
>stoicism is whatever I want it to be
I guess stoicism is actually utilitarianism since it's goal is to eliminate unhappiness. How about you just leave since you can't control me so why bother
>>
>>75725509
Diogenes is not /fit/ either. What care does he have for gains? What use? Diogenism is more or less chaotic nihilism. Vagabondism

>Bike stoic is the perfect example of stoicism. Can't control a situation? OK. Accept it and move on.
He's not a stoic at all. He doesn't even acknowledge that there are things he can and cannot control about the situation. His ENTIRE RATIONALE is that his unhappiness is probably outweighed by the thief's happiness. That is not stoicism.
>>75725518
You seem not to know what power of our will even means or how it applies to your utilitarian bike cartoon.

Christian indifference. It's similar to stoicism, but with extra motivation in the inevitable moment of weakness when you can't live up to a stoic mindset.

Doing some searches and no one has biology AS philosophy, everyone has philosophy OF biology
huge gap here no one is talking about this bros
>>
>>75725441
Yeah this guy is right, that image strikes me as far more utilitarian.

Bear in mind stoicism exploded in popularity during the hellenistic era, when you'd be fighting for whichever diaodochi wanted you as opposed to your city state.

Miserable times and the peak of might is right - stoicism was a cope that helped them through it but it definitely didn't mean they hoped their enemies benefitted from their own losses

anyway to answer your question OP stoicism to help endure short term pain and longer term issues like stalling.

they're on drugs
>>
>>75726784
Why are you so quick to attribute ill intent to others? Do you perhaps have ill intent and are projecting. Since when do you need drugs for either of those things and why would a religion that values ascetecism and is commanded to treat their body as a Temple for the Holy Spirit be the ones on drugs? You're a bit delusional.

It's not stoic because it is divorced from virtue. Stoics codified the four cardinal virtues: justice, wisdom/prudence, fortitude, and temperance. Stoicism is as much about the development and application of tese virtues as it is about "nah bro it's all good".

In the bike scenario, bike kid should accept that another has subjected him to iniquity, and respond by rationally learning from the experience without wasting time indulging his hurt feelings. Buy a bike lock next time. It would not be properly stoic to rationalize the feeling away by being glad the thief was made happier by the theft. Long term, the stoic knows that the thief's injustice and intemperance hurts himself and others; if the stoic can do something about that to improve the community, he will.

That's not what bike kid did. At best, he made a utilitarian judgment that theft increased the thief's happiness more than it hurt his own. That is shortsighted. Thieves hurt the community. Bike thieves typically sell the bikes for drug money. The wirld is worse off. But bike kid is a cuck so he ignores that.

Stoicism is not passive. Marcus Aurelius was an emperor who presided over many wars. Seneca was a senator. These men applied thought to action.

Really? Nobody has mentioned nihilism or post-nihilism yet? The world sucks, God is dead, and we have no reason to exist. Therefore we must define ourselves, and carve out a reason for existence is this mortal coil. Lift, improve yourself, and foster your slice of happiness in this empty world. Did you get injured? Have a disability? Born in a shit body in a poor family with abuse and no opportunity? Suck it up. Life sucks. What will you do now?
