Working on consistently waking up a bit earlier so I can cut that too, right now it takes me about an hour to start doing thinky work which is a bit long when meetings start at 9am and I wake up at 8:50

The want to drink that I would often have completely disappeared, which means that all that time I was using alcohol (and when I could get it, marijuana) to come down from my caffeine use. Destroyed my life by the way. Caffeine through alcohol destroyed my life completely. It's why I'm so hard on caffeine and consider it a hard drug. Maybe not everyone will react like this, but it's interesting that you mention anxiety. That's what I felt all the time for the last few decades, constant anxiety. I still get anxious, but not enough to want to drink alcohol. Since quitting coffee more than 4 months ago, maybe more than 5 at this point, I've drank two times, and both times I was not eager to they were tactical drunk and a third time I drank a light beer before going to the doctor after a surgery because what they were doing in that follow-up was going to be extremely painful for me.

Went for over 2 decades of my life abstaining from coffee because I didn't like the taste. Once I entered the wageslavery and had to wake up early, I pretty quickly went "fuck it this is unbearable without the magic drug" and since then been a coffee drinker, even advanced to "specialty" coffee snob who drinks it black. Never thought that would happen.

I was a regular black tea drinker (and cola when I was younger) and I honestly don't think I've ever felt their so-called caffeine actually do anything. Coffee is a fucking world of difference when it comes to waking you up and even after daily consumption of multiple cups a day I haven't numbed to its effect. Recently tried being careful about consooming too much though so I might drop the after-work coffee.

It's a circular pattern. You drink coffee because you didn't sleep well and then you don't sleep well because you had coffee. And then because you didn't sleep well because of the coffee you drink coffee. Because around and around and around.
