I don't run. I used to work out a lot and was very lean and strong but I have been slacking due to marriage.
This beer has me saying fuck it and I'm going on a 10 mile ruck as soon as my wife wakes up to take care of our son.
I don't run at all and even when I lifted weights I didn't do cario but shit is getting weird in the world and I should be able to do a 12 mile ruck with 40 pounds in under 2 hours.. I'm also 265 or 270 pounds depending on how much these drinks weigh.
I'm gonna grab 3L of water and a coupe of black and milds to bring with me.
My wife gets up in a coupe of hours so any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I just hope I don't die desu.
It's also 20 degrees F but I'm not a fucking bitch I'm doing this.

Literally nothing, I was out in the 10 degree snow storm that was last week. In winter layers matter more than bulk.
Legs don't matter, as the primary muscle group in use they will generate their own heat. Gotta keep the core warm though and the fingers/ears/nose covered.
If it's your first night out in such weather be aware none of your brown fat has activated yet, so it's going to be cold as shit.

If you're not use to rucking take a break half way point, drink more water, take a piss, and readdress your clothing situation.
Bring more clothing in your bag just in case.
As your clothing will start to get wet with sweat, you will quickly get colder. So add more layers if you need to.

For reference I wear
>All base layers (underwear, socks, fingerless gloves, scarf
>one mid layer (core)
>pants, cotton jacket
>trapper hat
until 0 degrees F.
At which point I switch to full base layer, full mid layer.
It has never gotten cold enough in TN for me to ever need a winter jacket or winter pants, winter gloves or any other meme shit like that.
Until you're like -30F all of that shit is a meme.

Don't have many tips other anon hasn't said, but if you're starting from zero endurance is more important than speed. Just walk this one, wake those muscles up. 10 miles at a moderate pace will take 3-3.5 hours, and that's fine. Just remember, when your legs start to bitch and it feels like you can't go, don't stop. They're going to work, they have to. They've carried you this far and they'll carry you to the end. You got this Boss, proud of you.

Because I'm not doing it only for cardio. Things may be happening and I have to be ready to defend my family so I want to be fit enough to travel long distances while carrying shit just in case.
Plus not many people (no one esle was out anyway) will go out in the cold and walk that far in boots with no training and for no reason and I'm proud of myself. Its been a few years since I got a good leg day. I used to be a gym rat but covid closed my gym so this is just nice. I used to love a good pump and the soreness became pleasurable and that's what arnold meant when he said he was cumming all day. My legs are cumming right now.

so instead of speeding up to raise the heart rate and challenge your endurance, you slow down and challenge your endurance by weight. thats why i dont find any point to it. only thing I can see is that when you just have to walk, you cant run, maybe say if you are walking with a group you have to match to their pace, then i can see slowing yourself with weight for the benefit of training instead of wasting time walking. a roooooner or a biker etc. will ruck as good as he bikes or runs. dont blow your kneecaps pointlessly i say.
and before you say strenght, no, a biker has the most durable legs, and squat, deadlift, row gives you the strongest legs and back.
