What is the secret to big calves, bros?

>What is the secret to big calves, bros?
Heavy raises to near failure. They're no different than any other muscle other than being horrifically boring to train
>>
>>76607095
Run up a lot of hills
>>
>>76607095
It's not childhood obesity or 3 hours of useless calf raises every other workout. It's toe walking and barefoot shoe running.
>>
>>76607095
freeskating added a lot of definition to my lower legs. Since you're pumping with rotated feet, and controlling the distance between the skates, it also works some unusual muscles
>>
>>76607110
Toe walking fucks up your ankle mobility, not worth it
>>
>>76607135
It really doesn't, as long as you don't do it constantly and exclusively. I do it whenever I'm barefoot like I always have as a kid. I have perfect squat depth.
>>
Genetics
>>
>>76607095
I think they can handle absolutely shitloads of volume. So in addition to running 40km per week I've also started doing single-leg calf raises whenever I have the chance, and obviously using the gym calf raise machine too.
I don't know about size, but it's definitely helped my performance.
>>
>>76607095
Walk up all the stairs in your commute 2 steps at a time. Also builds glutes.

>I think they can handle absolutely shitloads of volume.
no, u're just not doing em with your "volume"
>Walk up all the stairs
it's not vertically that calf works bot, it's horizontal
>Genetics
everytime u hear this bullshit it's massive cope from supposed know-it-all - calf is skeletal muscle, it is not different enough to matter than quad
>Toe walking fucks up your ankle mobility, not worth it
u use calves to propel forward not up bot, u would know if u had calves
>but i do know
u do indeed, u're just lying evil code
>>76604180
aren't u bitch bot gpt :D
>freeskating
bwahahha, ankle is literally locked in a boot bitch bot gpt, are u fucking kidding?
>It's toe walking and barefoot shoe running.
u're gonna roon on toes barefoot - cause u're gonna be careful not to ruin your heels, hunched forward with bad posture, roooning per se doesn't build calves, rooners usually have some quad, that's about it
>Run up a lot of hills
calf works horizontally bot, not vertically, gastrocnemius bends knee and propels u forward, that's why sprinters will have some calves, middle distance runners not so much
>Heavy raises to near failure.
near failure, past failure - don't matter bot, it just hurts in the back of knee and calves don't grow, it hurts cause gastrocnemius is rubbing on protruding bones of extended knee joint, it also doesn't grow because u're not getting any quality contraction - poking muscle precludes it from working properly
>Be fat when you were young
fat kids don't roon bot, they walk

pictured - toe walking posture, regular walking with good posture works gastrocnemius, regular flat walking allows gastrocnemius to bend knee and ankle at the same time as back leg is propelling you forward

heel-hook, as u can see it's knee bending with relaxed hips, i do it higher still and as isometric hold, remember to point toes

>that's peculiar picture, what is it?
left to right: calf raises are EVIL, not bad for muscle building - straight up evil, cause u're gonna try hard and u're gonna malform quad working overtime to oppose gastrocnemius bending the knee, and gastrocnemius will get injured and atrophied as u're trying to work it with straight knee - muscle rubs on protruding knee bones, that's the pain u get maxing standing calf raises, pain in the back of the knee

middle: magnus mitboe casually mogging coloured pictogram man, mitbo is cloomber, cloombers don't calf raises, cloombers heel-hook

right: batman, heroic cartoon, calves out-angle thighs
>>

The reason running barefoot works is because you can only do it correctly. You can do this in shoes too if you know how. The actual secret OP is looking for is that your calves arent made for pushing. They can do it but what they're really their for is stretching and rebounding. Either do your calf raises focusing on the stretch or run correctly which means hitting the ground almost flat footed (the front of your foot lands a microsecond before the rest of it, and the bending your knees more than you think you should causing a calf stretch and rebound). Toe walking is dumb.

u just described how to toewalk while rooning bot xD
>>76607609

u are admitting that u don't know shit here bot, how to hypertrophy calves:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/NfwtDIscQm8

all skeletal muscle is exactly the same in human body - it doesn't respond because what u're doing is NOT WORKING THEM
>>

Don't be silly.
>calves can PULL
I'm not saying they can't. I'm saying what they're made for and what puts the most resistance on them. These rock climbers have impressive calves because of the peak contraction they can get by hooking like that but they're not gonna grow past that and I'm never gonna have a rock climbing wall anyway so what's your point?

peak contraction ur arse bot, they hang off them heels, there's nothing PEAK about it
> but they're not gonna grow past that and I'm never gonna have a rock climbing wall anyway so what's your point?
they don't grow bigger because they are STARVING themselves, nor do they care about "legs" at all, or hypertrophy for that matter :D it's and side effect for them :D the forever elusive to "fitness community" gastrocnemius of gods they get completely unwittingly
>I'm never gonna have a rock climbing wall anyway so what's your point?
CALVES? so that u don't look like fucking pictured vlad?

oh w8 a minute bot-bot, u're saying that u need cloombing wall for heel-hook ? waaaaw, that's ... dumb
no u just need table to hook heel on, point toes, lift yer butt off ground by bending knee slightly and just hang there for dozen of seconds or 2
>>76607722

so that u don't look like pictured roid ***

Oh, so you're never done it lol. I have. It works. Until it doesn't because it's not progressible. Calf raises are and the main problem people have with them is not understanding how the calves work and doing them wrong. I already addressed this with the post you started arguing with even though you don't even lift. End of discussion.

> Oh, so you're never done it lol. I have. It works. Until it doesn't because it's not progressible.
yes i hang of my heel too and my legs never been better, NEVER bot, and i did 100+ standing calf raises to "failure" (unilaterally, straight, bent knee doesn't fucking matter) with near zero effect
> It works. Until it doesn't because it's not progressible.
extend yer other leg below table, i guess u could weigh it down but u can just hang a little LONGER bot :D
>Calf raises are and the main problem people have with them is not understanding how the calves work and doing them wrong.
the problem is that gastrocnemius is compromised by knee bones poking at it with straight legs, the problem is also that calf raise is extending the knee joint and gastrosnemius bends the knee so u need load that extends the knee, heel-hook is such load
>End of discussion.
u never started bot-bottomus :D

>>
Toe walking, which actually means walking on the balls of the foot, not the ballerina type.Walking up the stairs helps as well.
>>
>>76607095
Calves are incredibly genetic. Short muscle bellies for the gastrocnemius makes you look small. It helps to have proportionally short tibias. But you can always get them to grow by doing heavy calf raises.
>>76607097
And then they lose their fat and the calves go away because it was mostly fat.
>>76607110
You need to lift heavy to grow calves just like every other muscle. Gimmicks don't do anything.
>>76607225
>handle absolutely shitloads of volume.
All muscles can handle shitloads of volume. But if you're doing shitloads of volume, you're not lifting heavy enough to cause them to grow.
>in addition to running 40km per week I've also started doing single-leg calf raises whenever I have the chance, and obviously using the gym calf raise machine too. I don't know about size, but it's definitely helped my performance.
When you train for endurance, you get better endurance. Which is primarily what a shitload of calf volume does. If you want size, you need to train for strength. Meaning you need a more moderate volume but with heavy weight. Four sets for calves twice per week. Two sets standing, two sets seated. Heavy and to failure. If it doesn't hurt, you're not training calves
>>76607582
>it's not vertically that calf works bot, it's horizontal
Look up "plantar flexion." That's the primary function of the triceps surae. The gastrocnemius has only one other function which is flexion about the knee since it originates from the femur. The calves lift you upwards when you are not position your body to move forward. Locomotion is a compound motion.
