>Who is /fat/ for?
For Om-nom Overlords working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
Eat more meat.
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros) or LoseIt (great for both).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 1g per lb of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and burn fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body burning away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat hyper-processed foods.
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Day 5 of scales stuck. Surely tomorrow will be better right. Had my oatmeal and coffee this morning. Will have scrambled eggs on rye bread for lunch and then chicken, sweet potato, broccoli and carrots for dinner. I can't see where I am going wrong, maybe still too many carbs? Who knows. I will also lift today, so probably protein shake around then too.
>>
>>76907626
I've been having this problem too, I started lifting 3 times a week to go along with fat loss. The internet says its water retention from the lifts and newbie gains. But I can't help but get depressed and pissed off when I don't see the scale go down after a week of this hell.

I almost thought about stopping lifting, that's how much this is making me hate life. But then I think how every single week I see small improvements in my lifting capacity or ability to do more reps. Best example
>3 months ago I couldnt do more than 1 pushup
>I can do 60 now.
Guess I have to shift my mindset and tell the scale to eat a bag of dicks.
>>
>>76907626
i'm on like week 2. granted i ate alot around thanksgiving time.
I'm really committed to getting under 190 this week, I'm so close. Might go really slim tomorrow to push through

Down 30 pounds since August 11th. 6' 175. 5-10 more pounds to go. 10,000 steps a day. 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Lift 4-5 days a week. -500 calorie deficit. It's that easy but you faggots don't even try. Put the fucking fork down fatasses.
>>

It's time to stop wheighing yourself daily. It's not doing you any good. It's not about your body and life change anymore, it's about the number on the scale.

Newbie gains don't mean muscle gain, because it's mostly to do with your central nervoua system. It does affect inflammation and water retention, energy-cycling and metabolism. Those take a few weeks initially, and they'll keep developing as you lift more. I suggest you start checking the mirror & taking pictures for comparison.
>>
>>76907709
I use ChatGPT to design meals daily. I lower my calories based on my needs for that week. I eat primarily sirloin steak, ribeye steak, eggs, and butter. I'm going to start eating white potatoes but I've been keto these past 4 months. Sometimes I go out to eat and I count calories on the menu or websites when I do. It's all about meat and eggs. Avoid sugar. I love milk but cut it out because of lactose. If you have any other questions let me know

yes lol unless you have several years of lifting experience/muscle mass built up. i'm the same height as him except 10 lbs lighter but he looks much better than I do despite the weight difference because he has more muscle mass. If you have no muscle mass you're gonna have to get to a pretty low weight to not look like shit
>>
>>76907908
>low fat milk mixed with scoop of protein powder
does it taste ok?
>>
Is anyone else doing caloric cycling? I heard it helps mitigate metabolic adaptation. It's basically
>Keep same weekly deficit
>Just distributed differently on different days
>Highs and Lows.
>>
>>76907933
>>low fat milk mixed with scoop of protein powder
Yeah it's basically the ultra filtered one, like fairlife. So low fat, but same amount of protein as regular milk. The protein powder taste all depends on what you're using. You gotta pay the premium if you want good taste for that.
>>
>>76907905
Over longer periods my tracking is completely accurate and I lose what I expect.
I have been eating most of the same things too so theres no way I just magically tracked it wrong by such a huge margin.
Weight is just inconsistent for short periods of time like a single week.
>>
>>76907935
I sort of am. It's gouda. I eat the most on heavy lift days, lighter on normal lifty days, and the least (but almost entirely protein) on rest days.
>>
>>76907831
Anytime. Don't forget to buy a food scale if you don't have one. You'll need it. Measure everything. Weigh yourself twice a day after you piss and shit, once in the morning once at night. You will yo-yo and the. You'll go down a lot. That's just the way it is. Trust progress pictures more than the scale. Good luck buddy
>>
>>76907953
I've been thinking of trying it, doing the same, heavier days on lifts, lower on rest. But it looks grim if I'm to keep 200ish grams of protein on the low days. Last time i tried it i felt so low energy from the lack of carbs i couldnt even go for a walk for more than 30mins.
>>
>>76907957
>he doesn't live his life on a giant scale

>>
>>76907961
Try different lyft routines with it. I don't do any extra cardio during winter (the cold handles that part passively), but I cycle everywhere. I used to have PPLPPL, where I do the heaviest lifts at the start of the week, but am now doing PPLPP or PPPPL with the heavies on the 2nd days. I'll propably start doing 5x5s next year for 3 weeks, then 3 weeks 3-4x8-12 and deload.
>>
>>76907976
Oh no lift days is perfectly fine. I do basically 1900 calories
>2150 on lift days
>1713 on rest days
the problem is on rest days, i try to atleast do 10k steps, and purely because almost all of the 1713 calories is pure protein, i feel low energy from no carbs or fats. Was considering maybe dropping my protein goal on rest days to the minimum for my weight to allow more energy.
>>
>>76907874
it's more likely that you're not actually eating only 1400 calories than you're defying the first law of thermodynamics
>>
>>76907935
I'm doing keto, and trying out an 8-weeks on, 2-weeks off approach which has been working well. Apparently if you stick to strict keto for too long your body will "forget" how to properly metabolize carbs which can cause issues, so they recommend taking 2 weeks to stay at the same calorie deficit, but re-incorporate a moderate amount of carbs. Helps to keep everything running smoothly, and since you're already fat-adapted it's pretty easy to settle back into keto once the 2 weeks are up

You can always carboload the day before rest days. I dedicate my resties to pure rest, but do have a high carb meal after the last gym of the week. It's more about the glycogen stored in the inflammated muscle tissue more than the blood sugar levels.

Fucking around and finding out is the name of the game, fren. I just have 1 or 2 rest days a week, and my gym sessions are 5-6x100-140min/week. 5-6 dedicated to push, pull and legs + 3 core workouts (Tue, Thu and Sat). Cycling to the gym and back is 30min daily, but I don't count that as cardio. I've done a few 25+km rides last week, it certainly does boost my cycling endurance. As Spring comes along I'll propably start rooning to the gym on upper body days, and near to Summer I'll add swimming too.

Today at the gym I went to the cables to do warmup rear delts. There's 2 treadmills a few feet from me, facing me. Two cute zoomettes going in average pace. As soon as I Jack Hughman the girls fasten their pace, get a bit giggly. The other one keeps talking, the other one keeps saying "Not now... I can't..", then a whisper in low voice "I need to use the toilet after this.."

After the workout when I got into the locker room I walk to my things in the corner, put some water in my shaker and cool down a bit standing around. A zoomer guy comes in, notices his stuff's next to mine. He hastly gathers all his belongings in his hands and brings it to the opposite side of the room, sets them in a really crowded place. Now I have a full 6' x 6' space all to myself. This is it. I'm entering chaddom.

Normally I get glances from grils, the usual eye contact etc. but lately it's all been elevated. More orbiting around me, more matching my breaks and general pace of sets.

I checked my smell, wasn't too bad. No shit in pants either.

Very low T like well outside the reference range.

I don't sleep well. On CPAP but still go to bed late which is my fault. And on the day I did my blood test I hadn't slept well. I am wondering whether I should go see an endocrinologist my doctor gave me a referral. Or should I just lose weight and improve my sleep. Anyone been in a similar situation

>>
>>76908654
highest I got was 490 a couple years ago, I'm around 360 right now. Your best bet (at least what worked for me to start) is to shorten the amount of times you eat in a day. Chances are you're eating 3-4+ meals a day, shorten that to 2. Either breakfast/lunch or lunch/dinner. That alone helped me drop 25-30 when I first started.

Your TDEE is likely in the mid-high 4,000s, so I'd restrict yourself to 2,200 calories a day. Sounds like a big cut but it's honestly not. Get a calorie counting app and start building the habit of tracking what you eat. Doesn't have to be perfect to start, but the goal is to build the habits first.

Try to restrict the amount of carbs you eat. Don't need to go autistic with the macro tracking, but cut out/severely restrict bread, pasta, rice, starches, etc. from your diet to start.

Also try to move around for at least 5-10 minutes a day to start. Whether it's doing a seated stretching routine or walking from one end of your space to the other a few times (I personally made a goal to do 25 jumping jacks a day to start, really made a difference).

This is also literal step 1 shit, and it all will end up passively improving the quality of your sleep. No need to worry about low T right now. I use a CPAP too and just doing those things I recommended will fix a lot of your issues within a few weeks.
>>
>>76908679
Thanks man. A lot of the stuff you mentioned I have done, although I eat carbs but reduce fat, and I am planning to do. It's just I am wondering whether I should get on TRT or something like that. To see the endo I gotta pay like $150 or $300, I forget.

But I can also see myself dropping 100 lbs in 4-5 months and working on my sleep and that massively improving my T levels if not restoring them to within range.
>>
>>76908552
>chicken and eggs
you sick fuck
>>
>>76908683
I'd really try not to worry about the T levels dude, that's like 80th place on the priority scale of shit you should be worrying about. When you're at that level of weight (I know from experience) it's a genuine effort to maintain that level of consumption, let alone continue to gain. All you have to do is make small changes to see big weight reductions.

It might seem paradoxical, but I'd cut out the carbs and replace those calories with healthy fats instead. They'll keep you satiated way better than carbs will, and will also keep your ghrelin (the shit that causes hunger pangs) to not scream as loud

Long time lurker here fat/ with a simple question, what is the most effective way to get rid of insulin resistance? My ma got her anual physical and she scored quite high in her blood sugar (almost pre diabetes) and shes freaking out quite a lot. Shes not unhealthy in any way and she is quite alright fitness wise (she is around 10 kgs from her normal weight however) and I want to help her in every step of the way being the boomer that she is she thinks now she has to jump on metformin and that her life is over (it isnt)

The problem with fasting for me is that I'm going to be insatiably hungry the whole day after I break it.
I think it's an evolutionary thing, like my body's saying "stock up on calories while you still can". It even feels different from regular hunger, it's less intense, more like a constant nagging feeling.
I tried something different a few days ago where I consumed nothing but milk and protein for two days, around 1000 calories worth each day. I felt pretty much normal, my stomach wasn't upset and my shits were fine. I think I'm just going to do that instead from now on.
>>
>>76908951
good stuff anon, stay locked in
>>
>>76908955
The feeling you're getting is you starting to connect with your body, shrimple as. No need to look for evolutionary explanations to feelings of this moment, just know that your whole evolution contains a template for you to be able to very fluently communicate with your body.

Now, there are many variables that affect what your body is craving. Only you know the answers to those variables (glycogen/carbs, hormonal support/fats, bodily or hormonal functions/prots, hormone micros/vitamins, calorie related/thermogenesis), learning about them is part of the journey.

If you're doing iron man mode you know it's game over and you need to start all over from the very start, and there's no button to skip the cut scenes
>>
>>76908993
>iron man mode
what
>>
>>76908996
Ironman mode in games is a permadeath/restricted save feature, forcing players to live with all consequences, preventing reloads, and often disabling trading or multiplayer interaction, popular in titles like Europa Universalis, XCOM, and RuneScape. It significantly increases difficulty and immersion by making mistakes final.
Common features of Ironman Mode
Permadeath: Death is permanent; no reloading to a previous save state.
Single Save File: Only one save file exists, usually auto-saved at critical points (end of turn, month, etc.), preventing save scumming.
No Load/Reset: You cannot load earlier saves or restart chapters/encounters to undo mistakes.
Achievement Locking: Often required to unlock certain achievements or a separate difficulty flag.
Restricted Interaction (RuneScape/OSRS): In MMOs, it restricts trading, group content, and player interaction, making the player self-sufficient.

fill belly with water, 0 calories and you cannot put any more matter into yourself.
its a volume game.
>>

Your body gets rid of fat as you breathe
Water doesn't make you breathe
>>
>>76909071
What are you talking about?
>>
>>76909087
The chemical process of your body's fat stores getting mobilized uses water. So making sure you drink enough water means you can maximize fat loss. If you're dehydrated, you might not burn off all the fat that you could.

Can be good psychologically as it gives you a mental break. Then you can focus and lock-in for the cutting phase. From what I've read, there isn't much physical difference if the calories in/out are the same.

>Yeah, I’m skeptical as well of diet breaks.
I just finished a 2 week maintenance break. Honestly I feel its unneccesary unless you're in the last few lbs of your weight loss and you've been dieting for a long time. It does more harm by delaying weight loss for 2 weeks than good. Also i felt like shit eating more than i was used to for those 2 weeks. Not to mention eating at maintenance feels weird, like you can never be 100% accurate with what your maintenance is, so i might have gained a bit of weight during those 2 weeks, since i didnt bother weighing myself during the break.

A question about appetite, I started going to [something like community college], I basically waste around 4 hours just going there, I usually have breakfast before going and dinner once I am back.
The thing is, while I am at home I always hungry, even after I have eaten, but when I am there, I am fine with not eating, I am never distracted by the idea of wanting to go back home to eat.

I feel like the answer to my appetite problem is somewhere here but I don't know how to replicate it at home.

this. I was deep into pre-beetus and right on the cusp of type 2, started having the sickly sweet piss and had a come to jesus moment. Started doing keto + IF and it completely reversed my symptoms and raised my insulin sensitivity. I'm much farther along than your mom is, and from what my doc told me even if you go keto early on in type 2 (like 3-6 years post-diagnosis) it's still possible to reverse and put it into remission.

If she starts right now she'll be fine in a few months. Just treat keto as a tool, not a permanent lifestyle change
>>
>>76909087
hydration is essential to fat loss, if you're even a little dehydrated it stresses your system and diminishes its ability to passively burn fat. Great call on the water jug, try to always stay hydrated
>>
Do you ever worry about cholesterol on keto?
I love liver, but it's basically the waste dump of saturated fat so it's as unhealthy as it gets.
>>
>>76909144
you're biologically incentivized to store fat because we used to be nomadic hunter-gatherers who would normally go days without eating. To give you an idea of how slow this evolutionary process is to catch up, it still hasn't adapted from the agricultural revolution and us moving away from that lifestyle 12,000 years ago
>>
>>76909341
NEVER factor in calorie loss from exercise into your eating calorie deficit. Just treat it as a bonus fat loss that passively builds up

how often are you incorporating food into those non-exercise activities? One of the big hangups I've been dealing with on my journey is that all my hobbies had food weaved into it in some way. If I was watching a movie it'd be while eating food or popcorn, if I was playing vidya it'd be while I was eating a fast food burger or a coke, if I was studying it'd be while I was chugging down a shake or junk food, etc. Once I decoupled all the food from those hobbies it honestly took some of my enjoyment of them out of it for a while. Starting to come back slowly, but it's a genuine struggle. That might be why you feel so hungry when you're doing it, might've pavlov'd yourself into enjoying shitty food while doing them
>>
>>76909913
nope, as long as it's not overly processed, you can have way more cholesterol than is normally recommended. I'm assuming you're referring to eggs primarily? I got my labs done a little bit ago after a few months of strict keto and everything was normal. I wouldn't worry about it too much, cholesterol has gotten a really bad rap, as long as you're not eating 20 eggs a day you should be fine
>>
>>76909940

If your ultimate goal is to see the magical number on a man made tinymanlet screen be as small as possible you shouldn't take creatine. Creatine maxes your lifts and the fluid metabolism makes you spend more energy and get larger volume inflammation for it, in the long term you get to your strength and hypertrophy goals a lot faster. If things like str and big muscles aren't your thing I suggest you stay off creatine supplements, and to be on the safe side all foods that contain it.

fat cells don't die -fast- so it's piss easy to regain weight.
but actually gaining a new 10lbs of fat in a week is not easy. it can be water weight and done in a day full of carbs.
>>
You give it other things to worry about, such as muscle breakdown from lifting.

That was certainly a thing for me. I had created a habit of playing vidya while stuffing my face and I'd play vidya that allowed me to stuff my face while playing it. I got into VR as a way to decouple the two, its really hard to eat most foods while playing games in VR.
>>
>>76910176
Nah, weigh yourself everyday if you like but just come to expect the variation, daily weigh-ins are a great way to catch yourself if you start to slip. I weigh myself daily and log my weight daily, every morning after my morning piss/shit I log my weight on my phone, but that number isn't my 'number', I keep a 7-day average that I look at, the average is my number, that's the number I obsess over, not the daily one, if that number go up by more than a few percent I know I'm fucking up.

I've gone from 251 lbs to 231 lbs in a little under a month!! Really proud of the loss but I'm also a little concerned — is it supposed to be this fast? Will my rate of loss slow down? I really don't want a bunch of loose skin so I'm trying to lose at a reasonable pace but my body doesn't seem to agree lol. I'm aware it can't be all fat so is it just water weight? 4 pounds a week is like a 14,000 calorie deficit, that could be a person's weekly energy needs. If you used to eat a really high carb diet and now you're low- or no-carb that could account for some of it because carb intake is a major factor to how much water you retain. If you're barely eating anything and/or working out heavily daily then you could get your numbers I suppose
>>
>>76910250
Yeah that's why I was really confused

You do realize the trend line shows even with less datapoints? You sound like you've replaced an unhealthy obsession with another one, and when the weight loss stalls, or even turns to gain (muscle growth) the thin thread of your mental resilience breaks and into a personal hell you go. Good luck with that, captain.

is your number 1 priority building muscle mass so that you actually look good once you reach your goal weight? or is your number 1 priority simply just scale go down at any cost? if the former, take creatine. if the latter, don't take it. I'd go with the former though, because if not you'll be in for a big surprise when you reach your goal weight and still look like shit.

I dont really have a problem with food. I think I'm alcoholic, and then eat a lot when I drink. Thats why Im going to try and fast for 14 days to detox, and see how my habits are after that. Thats exactly what happened in my mind. This weekend, I had a few drinks at my friend's birthday party, and it was fun, but I remembered going to a party of his years ago and how much I looked forward to it to party. I realized alcohol has lost all its novelty. I have been slowly drinking more and more often over the last 4 years where it has lost some of its appeal. Don't know how I didn't realize it. It needs to be a special occasion thing.
>>76910888
The other extremes were gradual and built over 4 years. I'm trying a cold turkey approach while the iron is hot. I fasted before (before I got my own place) and it helped a lot, just never this long (7 days was my previous long). Everytime I would finish a fast I would eat healthy for a month without even trying.
>>
>>76910893
I am mainly doing it to curb alcoholism, which should help with weight loss long term (and short).

These days I’ve been experimenting with eating all my meals within a smaller time window as I’ve found it helps with hunger levels throughout the day. Comfortably at ~1200 kcal now as well.
