>Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

Why would I want to race? I just like to run.
>>
>>76919267
The best environment to run is a race. It's exciting and spiritually satisfying. The energy will result in your fastest runs. If you do them enough, you will recognize others and make friends and rivals. Whatever the reason you like to run, a few sanctioned races a year will multiply your enjoyment. Don't let an ego and asocial tendencies hold you back.

it has most of the fancy running stuff compared to the vivoactive because it's supposed to be 500$ or so. don't remember what features they are though, training status maybe? something to look out for. >>
>>76920180
165 is a nice basic watch, but limited. The 265 and pace 3 will have everything you need and for 90% of people everything you would want.
The Garmin will be a better “smart watch” , better screen, and has Garmins ecosystem which is more developed. COROS battery life best for what you are paying, and a lot of people/reviews say it’s more comfortable on the wrist. Its other selling point is it’s cheaper, but it sounds like you got a good deal on Garmins. I would say see if you can mess around in their UIs and see if one stands out for you. Either way, both should be great. (Own pace 3 btw)

More of a shoe question than a running question. I've seen a lot of people with QC sneakers recently raving about how nice/comfortable they are. I have running shoes so these would purely be worn as an everyday comfort sneaker/walker type shoe.
Which QC is best?
There are Cloud 6's now https://www.amazon.com/Mens-Cloud-Black-9-5-Medium/dp/B0D31S5P2V?sr=8-1&psc=1
But most of what I saw people wearing were Cloud 5s https://www.amazon.com/Mens-Cloud-Sneakers-Black-White/dp/B0FCDQ8FTG?sr=8-9&psc=1
Or would the Cloud 4s be best? https://www.amazon.com/Mens-Cloud-Ivory-Black-Medium/dp/B0DM2QHV2Y?sr=8-32&psc=1

I know sometimes an older model might actually be preferred for a variety of reasons, so please let me know which of these you guys collectively prefer so I can tell my mom to get it for Christmas.

Could too soft shoes be the cause? I always kinda felt "wobbly" when running but I figured it was because I was new. It's not about firm/soft shoes, it's about neutral vs stability shoes. I'd argue that most people (maybe 70%) need a stability shoe for their daily trainer.

So try something like an ASICS Gel Kayano (my favourite), a Brooks Adrenaline GTS, or a New Balance 860. But really, the important thing is that you get properly fitted for shoes in person by someone who knows what they're doing. Every foot is different, so you can't just buy stuff online until you have experience in knowing what you need.

Pretty much what’s happened to me as a new runner. Went from old minimal trail running shoes to Novablast now back to my old shoes and my pain has gone down a lot. Briefly tried stability shoes but the made things worse. Biggest benefit for me has been intense yoga 5 days a week and daily body weight. Just been doing calf raises and air squats to failure for five sets, plus five sets of fifty of these knee to wall exercises. Gonna try to get more serious about strength training soon and get a gym membership because that’s been the single best thing for me running wise. I’m guessing you have uneven hips and week Achilles like me, so look up other stuff for that

so what does recovery look like for a weekly 40k runner, what's your schedule like

>>
To those who lift and run, what's your schedule look like? More specifically, how are you balancing leg days and running? I've often got plenty of free time where I could do one in the morning and one in the evening, but soreness and general fatigue are a whole other matter.
>>
>>76923614
But you did the miles. These are the best runs you will ever have. They will give you more than all the pleasant/enjoyable runs you do. Endure these runs. Enjoy the others.
>>
>>76923485
I'm just gonna wait and go get a gait analysis or w/e it's called. I looked and my local shop offers it for like $80 or something. I'll take both my pairs of shoes in, explain the issues and see what they say. I really want to run but I'm not gonna do it with a ton of pain and I'm not gonna buy another pair of shoes only for them to not work out or something. Even after a week of rest and ZERO pain the moment I go out to run BOOM it's right back so something needs to change.
>>
>>76924535
I lift and run at the same time. I have a flat bed that I load up with weights. My wife drives and she follows me and my kids hand me weights pertaining to whatever group I'm working that day.
>>
dogs aren't scary
>>
>>76924535
I lift twice a week and when I'm actively training I also run 4x per week.
>Mon: OHP, weighted chinups, deadlifts
>Tues: easy run
>Wed: long run
>Thurs: rest
>Fri: bench press, rows, barbell squats
>Sat: intervals or a Parkrun
>Sun: easy run

If you have trouble balancing leg workouts with running, try putting them on the same day so that you aren't spending the whole week with DOMS. Personally I've been going pretty light on my lower body for a while (only 150kg deadlifts 1x5 and 125kg squats 3x5), so my legs are still really fresh for my runs.

I find that you can't really progress with both lifting and running at the same time, so pick one and focus on it for a while. At the moment I'm cutting for Christmas and I'm simultaneously nursing a knee injury from some dead shoes, so I'm not making any progress with either.
>>
>>76924535
there's just no way to do both well, at least if you're past beginner on both.

I'll pick either 4 days of running a week and 2 lifting, or 4 lifting 2 running, depending on what I want to maintain and what I want to progress. On days I run I can do upper body. And sure as shit don't forget your deload week.
>>
>>76924535
My schedule is erratic due to my job. I'll go with a standard Sun-Sat week, but I have to rearrange based on my work schedule:
>Sun
Recovery bike ride: 30min-2hrs
Or other easy cross training

>Mon
Lift: see*
Right afterwards: easy run 30-60min

>Tues
Hard run:
When not in training cycle, my up-the-hill, down-the-hill 6 miler
When in training cycle: switch each week with tempo run or track interval workout

>Wed
Recovery ride: 30-60min
Or other easy crosstraining

>Thurs
Rest day

>Fri
Lift: see*
Right afterward, easy run: 30-60min

Sat:
Long run: 12-20 miles varyimg if I'm in a training cycle or not.

* Lifts, all 3x8w/weight vest and dumbbells
Dips, singleg legs squats, dumbbell rows, single leg deadlift, dumbbell bicep curls, bulgarian split squat

Do whatever lifts you like though. Easy runs can help with recovery. If you have to split them up, I suggest lifting in the morning, run in afternoon.

I ran a fast marathon with very low mileage because of injuries. I did 2 half marathons in training and apart from that my longest run was 10 miles. If you have a good base fitness and do a lot of cross training you will not be much slower than your goal pace. 10 weeks is plenty of time. I'm sure you could still run a 3:20
>>
>>76924535
I do an easy run before my leg days.
Then the next day I don't run but do cross training instead. Bike + elliptical or whatever.

Also depends on what my priorities are at the time. If I have a race coming up then leg days will be easier. Not training for any race then I can trash the legs in the gym it doesn't matter if I'm tired the next day or two.
>>
>>76925078

Pretty solid 5.5 mile run today after about a week off dealing with calf soreness. Kept my HR in the 120s at a sub 9 min/mile pace. Im happy with it. Planning on another easy run tomorrow, then a pain session on Wednesday. Going to go into the darkness and stay there as long as I can. Should be fun
>>
>>76925442
I think something like this is also happening to me. I bet there's a 30 minute minimum or something for activities to count to whatever the algorithm behind fitness age is. Or maybe you need to exceed the 150 minutes per week by at least 100% to max out the stat or something. My fitness age went from 18 to 19 and then i exercised and it was back to 18. Today it is 18.5. I know it's bullshit but it annoys me a little bit. If you think about it 20 or 21 or maybe even 25 is probably a better age anyways in terms of max health.

Like, an 18 year old is still a child, pretty sure my shoulders got wider way into my 20s lmao.

I think I need to join a running club or get some friends who are runners or something. Running is really the only hobby that I care about, think about, or want to talk about. I always feel out of place when Im with people who dont run. Especially when they want to drink and Im like no Im going to bed early because Im doing a long run at 5 am. They don't get it and never will. And I dont get them, and never will. Im starting to look down on them, which is probably not good. I should be hanging out with guys that are faster than me so I keep pushing myself.

Why are runners seemingly incapable of following an actual strength program?
I even see it with "professional" runners on YouTube. They say "you need to get strong!" and then cut to B-roll of them doing 5kg kettlebell around-the-worlds.

I don't think that's true anymore. Maybe 20 years ago. Serious runners these days tend to have good strength programs.

This morning I was smashed in the face with regret. I realized despite being near 40 Im still faster than a lot of guys in the 20s. Running is natural to me and fun. It brought me back to middle school when I was recruited by the track coach to join the team without tryouts because I was lapping the other kids in gym. But being a dumbass kid who didnt like the structure of practice I quit. I realized I'll never know how good I could have been or what my potential was if I had just stayed with it through middle school, high school, and into my 20s. And now its too late for all that. Im good but Im past my prime and there's no getting it back. Anyway I guess if anyone asks what Im running from now I know. Its my past.

This year I went from being a completely sedentary 350+lb fatass for my entire adult life, really ever since middle school I've been a fatass, to slowly and painfully lumbering my flabby ass around the block, to walking 10,000 steps every day, then incorperating running short little 1 minute bursts with walking breaks in between, to running 1 complete mile every morning without breaks this year. I guess my goal for this year is to improve my endurance enough and run a 5k without stopping by this time next year, I did a 5k already but it was full of breaks to stop and catch my breath, my goal is to be able to do it without stopping.

>>
>>76934100
You swear? Does this still work if I am already relatively lean? I am like 16%bf. I lift daily and get over 1.2g of protein/pound bw. Thinking of adding in a 5k jog a day or every other day to try to push through to 12% without having to starve more than I am already.
>>
>>76934136
to my knowledge! with the caveat that i am not all that much of a lifter, i mostly do dumbbell work. i do strength training every other day on my cardio off days, and i've been able to maintain my muscle while in deficit (and gain muscle while not) while keeping that routine.
that said, cardio is very good for losing bodyfat and will improve your overall fitness. i highly recommend it if you're trying to lean up without eating starvation level.
>>
>>76934136
i know jay cutler and a bunch of other bodybuilders used to do long, intense stairmaster cardio sessions, so it should be the same and you should be fine.

Take a bunch of body measurements and monitor yourself carefully if you want. Note also that if you're under-carbed, your muscles will "shrink," but aren't really eaten. Eat some carbs and you'll fill right back up.
>>
>>76934156
>>76934154
I will try for two weeks and see if I lose all my muscle may God strike you two retards down for setting me on the wrong path.

if you're just trying to accelerate a cut I think doing a mile every other day is perfectly adequate. That way you won't be tempted to eat more for recovery, either, which defeats the purpose. You can always increase intensity after a couple weeks.
>>
>>76933857
Take an enema a few hours prior to the start, shit it all out, use loperamide and simethicone, then try to take another shit about 30 mins prior to start.

Watched a video exactly on this about a year ago. The verdict on the research? Lots of weight lifting. Sure, you still got to do your rucks, but weight lifting showed more improvement overall. The research also showed to at least incorporate two runs a week without weight.

Also:
>ruck-running
Hey, is the guy who injured himself running with a weight vest I think two weeks ago still here? If you are, tell this guy how quickly you got injured with just 20lbs evenly distributed via a weight vest unlike a rucksack.
>>
>>76934326
>>76933461
Ruck running isn't that bad if you ease into it. I've been doing it for about 5 years now and my knees are fine. Having no lifting routine and jumping straight into sprinting with 60lbs is what injures people, not a tepid 10 minute mile pace every now and then.

even worse than joining the army, you’re exploding your knees for free and you don’t even get a complementary meal at applebees once a year
>>
How does testosterone supplementation affect recovery time when it comes to running?
I feel I take way to long to recover, even after doing a good block of slow running/uphill walking etc.

I’m on the lower end of testosterone but I haven’t gotten into TRT yet but starting to consider it.
>>
>>76934455
I am in the army, if it wasn't obvious.
>>
>>76934461
I don't take stuff but have naturally high t. My recovery time is nothing, like a fraction of what the watch tells me. t. 36
>>
how do you avoid knee injuries
>>
>>76934572
dont be fat dont run too much
if ur getting injured running ur a retard
>>
>>76934572
Don't be fat, dynamic stretching after every workout, eat a vegan diet, walk at least as much as you run, don't be obsessed with making every run faster than the last, run 80% or more of your kilometres at a slow pace, wear good shoes.
Some combination of all those things, plus have Nordic genes. No knee injuries ever for me. I haven't had a true rest day in years
>>
>>76934455
>>76934475
Every single person I know that has been in the military has shit knees by the time they get discharged because of this. It's like the military is purposely being idiots when they know about the studies which show how to get as good or better results with a lot lesser injuries.
>>
>>76934576
I’m not fat. What if you can’t control how much you run? I’m joining the army so I won’t really have a choice
>>
>>76934610
Then you better get fit enough that the running the military will order you to do won't be too much.
>>
>>76934610
if you are joining the military in a first world country (excluding french foreign legion) then your knees will be fine as long as you have got your body used to running regularly before you go to basic training.
>>
>>76934572
the real answer is strengthen and rehabilitate the leg muscles you're overlooking. Ab, glute, hip, quad, hamstring, calf, tib, ankle. Strengthen, stretch, and incorporate into your form over time.

even without that its insane. that shit is low leverage, b.

i mean, potentially u can get a lot of benefits later on, but i think u can get those benefits in an easier way without going into the army. if you're at that level of fucking grunt, then do something where you can either make serious cash or fucken...become a grunt in an easier way for the governmetn for mo betta and easier benefits.
i never understood the army thing. that is insane. unelss you're going in rotc and hop in as an officer, that's different

Yep. Sleds, bounding, sprinting so far this week. Weights tomorrow, plyos at the weekend and sprinting again early next week. Debating whether to do indoor competitions this winter. Or might just go to watch my kids compete.

I've always been a fat fuck. I hate running and always have pain in my knees, shins, ankles, lowerback and toes when running. I did the flat foot test by wetting my feet and i dont have them.I recently got some asic super cushions and it seems to help

I feel like I keep a pretty healthy mindset to it but my running never improves and I wind up quitting. I'll run as much and as fast as I like one day, rest, try to run to the same level, rest, same level, and then take the weekend off. But my running g never improves, ever, it starts getting worse.

I've tried running everyday, a little slower. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong
>>
>>76935487
maybe you've an extremely low tolerance for pain. exercise hurts m8.
>>
>>76935487
Take smaller steps. Listen to 180 bpm music. Get your cadence high and keep your speed low - take small steps.

You need to build your durability. Start walking 20k steps a day for a few months before your next running bout, then RUN SLOW. With a high cadence.
>>
>>76935540
Do you run on top of the 20k steps? Do you run everyday?
>>
>>76935545
Currently I'm running six days a week. I've switched over to most of my steps being running now and lost the focus on the steps. But look up Paavo Nurmi the 'flying finn". Undefeated in over 100 races from 800m distance and up. Built his base walking.
>>
>>76935587
The training really developed with the progression of Paavo Nurmi and the Finn’s. Nurmi and the Finn’s continued with the long walks (up to 4hrs) idea. You may be wondering why they insisted on using walking so much. The reason is simple: it built a base. That should sound like a familiar line of reasoning for most coaches, and is no doubt the forerunner to the more modern concept of a base that Lydiard envisioned. In fact, the Finn’s and Swede’s insisted on long walks during a 6+ week winter period to prepare one for running (source: Lore of Running)

>>
>>76935691
180 is reserved for athletes. 170 or 190 is fine for amateurs but not 180.
>>
>>76932171
Yeah I usually did like, 1h40? 1h45? like I'm not going to say I wasn't tired in the afternoon after that or going to bed a bit earlier, but I didn't expect just another 15~20 minutes would be felt so much, and even the next day a bit still, I think.
>>
>>76933918
How old were you at that time?
>>
>>76935487
Running gains come over months of consistent training. Not week to week. Just keep at, lose some weight, and do some cross training. One day you will go for a run and realize oh shit I'm way fitter than I used to be.
>>
>>76934766
Yes. Join the army. It's all going to happen in two weeks, bro!

>>76935187
There's a lot of appeal! You get to spend years of your life being a good zogbot! You get to be patriotic and serve Uncle Sam and Big Brother. In exchange of it, you will be treated great. You get a high chance of being injured during basic training due to the amount of overtraining they'll do to you just to get you adjusted to the pressures of military life. When you get out, you get crappy medical coverage called Tricare. If you are lucky to live around a VA center, you can go there to reduce your costs. However, you have great treatment in the form of doctors, nurses, and psychologists who medically gas light you and blame everything on PTSD--even your thyroid and cholesterol problems. Tripped while out on the side walk and broke your elbow running because you finally decided to get back into shape after a long break from burnout due to being forced to do PT, and it's one of the best medicine per studies? It's all in your head. But don't worry: you get more mood stabilizers to help with that. If you so happen to be hospitalized for anything, hopefully the nurse won't give you someone else's medications like their insulin.

>>76935487
Typical beginners mistakes. Do a structured training problem like C25k. Don't run as fast as you can nor every day. Build up takes time. You don't get up one day, decide you want to run a marathon in two weeks. Do some easy crosstraining like cycling and rowing. By your own admission, you are fat. Try swimming. It's non impact, and you do get some great cardio from it. Learn to freestyle. After you learned and done it for awhile, start doing drills like catch-up, single arm freestyle, closed fist, and side drills. You can do these in intervals and be just fine.

>>76935691
Do your natural form and cadence, and work up. This crap is not hard to comprehend.

Hey guys I just started walking 10k steps a day about 3 months ago. Any advice on beginning to run? I bought some Topo Auras and they fit well and are very comfortable. Should I just try the couch to 5k program? Any advice for a 35 male beginner? I'm 175 6' if that helps. Trying to get to 10% body fat
