>Who is /fat/ for?
For Weighty Whirligigs who are working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Forgive me, because I have sinned.
I was down to 197, and I wanted to do a few eating challenges on a vacation, took 10 days off from the gym. I did a chicken wing and fries challenge, a big deli sandwich, and a steak and sides challenge. Beat all 3.
Ballooned up to 220, legs holding a lot of water from all the sodium in those damn 2lbs of fries.
I looked like squidward after the crabby patties.
Been doing 4 hours of cardio a day, 1 hr lifting. Back down to 194 in about a week.
Probably not going to ever sin like that again.
Probably.

Back again, I've lost track of how many times I've done this. Don't feel like digging up my old info so decided just to make a new name and start fresh. Wasn't going to do the fatty contest and just randomly post progress but using the general again has motivated me and it can't hurt to have the extra accountability.

Taking a more radical approach this time instead of just trying to wing it. Doing a very controlled diet of just a few foods so it's more difficult to cheat.
Yes I know my toenails are fucked up, I can't reach them to cut them myself so I can only get them cut every so often. You can still make fun of me for it though I don't mind. Glad to be back on the wagon again hopefully for the last time.

I see no flaw in this plan. After all, it's worked for every anorexic ever
>>
>>77141419
Sorry what I meant is I don't have a variety of things I would want to eat sitting around tempting me. I prepped everything for the specific meals ahead of time so there's nothing else to eat but what I got which is all healthy.
In the past I would just buy whatever and force myself to just eat less. But I was never able to actually control myself well and have yoyo'd hundreds of pounds over the last few years.
Now I'm trying it having nothing but exactly what I planned ahead of time in the home so the temptation is removed at least while I am at home. Still haven't perfected the times I have to get out and eat out.

That's basically what I'm doing. I mentioned in a previous thread I'm making a big ass salad once a day and that's my only meal. No croutons or anything so it's pretty much carb free except maybe a little in the dressing. I'm using a homemade ranch using greek yogurt for the base.
Did it for 5 days last week all using canned chicken. This week I wanted to mix it up so yesterday I made taco meat using ground beef and spices. That was really good. I mixed up the leftovers with some chicken today and that was even better.
Going to try rotating different meats in the salads so I don't get bored. I really think I've hit on something though.

I just don't feel good unless I feel full from a meal. But I can't do that if I'm eating rice/pasta/potatoes and other shit.
But if it's salad I can make a massive bowl and it's hardly any calories. I'm dumping tomatoes and cucumbers and some berries and whatever and it fills me up and I feel satisfied.
It's the first meal I've been able to come up with that doesn't make me feel like shit after eating it and I'm actually sticking to it so far.

Very close to being in the 250s which I'm strangely excited for. Can't remember the last time I was that weight. Definitely over 10 years ago back when I was in college.

He was shilling sugar diet last I saw. Dude is a fatty in a skinny person's body, he needs tricks and fad diets to keep himself from pigging out. So every couple of months he tries something new because the novelty of the new fad diet is what keeps him from overeating. Despite objectively making it, he's ngmi material.

>Muh Fibre
I'll have more of that for dinner, I eat fruits and beans regularly so it isn't a problem for me.
>Muh Sodium
The ketchup doesn't have added salt and 50 g ham only has 1.1 grams of salt which is like 426 mg sodium. The siracha has some salt but I use so little it is around 150mg, so yeah around 650-700 mg sodium, so not a problem.

I still can't sleep on my back, but it does get much easier to sleep in different positions as you lose more weight. Suddenly, there's not a massive amount of weight crushing down on your joints. However, if you typically sleep with your knees together, you will need to invest in another pillow to put between your knees because it's just going to be joint on joint action and it's going to hurt. It will also become very difficult to sleep on firm surfaces because your hip bone, your elbows, everything is now pressing against hard surface. You have in a way lost a lot of cushion.

Honestly why is sodium ever really a problem?
High sodium and bloating is a short term problem that you can correct in like 5 days whenever you want.
If eating high sodium helps you maintain your deficit and lose fat who cares? Hit your goal and then go low carb/sodium for a few days, drink a ton of water, and then its like you were low sodium the entire time.

Sweat is a measurement of effort. I've never seen a gym nigger act up when a tubby is attempting self improvement even if it is some bitch tier weights or rep count. Just be sure to wipe up after yourself on gym equipment, don't be a nigger and you're all good.
>>

Not at all, it just means I did good work. I strut out of the gym with a drenched shirt knowing I just kicked ass in there, and if anyone is looking they're probably acknowledging that.
I wear black polyester jogging pants and find the sweat doesn't show on them as much. Definitely shows on my shirt though.
>>
>>77143128

>>
>>77143152
Yeah but either way you can have high sodium all the way through your diet and then at the end cut it out and itll be the exact same thing after a week tops as if youd been low sodium the whole time. Conversely, you could stay low sodium all diet and at the end start eating a lot of sodium and it will basically be like you were high sodium the whole time
It being difficult to find low sodium foods doesnt really change this

My point is if eating high sodium foods that fit your calories and macros makes your diet more tolerable go for it. correct it down the road when you have less to manage

Ive done similar, but I'm 6'4 so the fat is more spread out. did like 225 high bodyfat % to 180 and didnt have loose skin, but at 180 I still had a flabby lower belly
I'm trying to get lower as well to see at what weight will I lose it. I can see the outline of my abs (no separation just the outline of the group) but still have flab on the lower belly but I really dont think it's loose skin

Good job anon, im in the same boat as you. Officially Started January 7th and just hit 35 lbs down. Started at 280 and my goal is ~220. If im correct in my guessing, estimating and measurements I should hit ~15 to 17 %bodyfat at that weight.

>6ft, 90kg

So my BMI is 22.4 now, surely I should have a flat stomach? Idk man. The minimum BMI to be health is 18, which for me means a floor of 60kg. If I'm not lean by 67kg, a BMI of 20, that's fucking concerning. I just want to see abs, I don't even want to be shredded af. And I know I don't have a lot of muscle but fuck me, this is a shocker.
Ideally, my FFMI would be 22 minimum at around 12% bodyfat, which is 84kg. The idea of gaining 17-24kg, most of which is lean tissue, is just insane. That's not even a crazy FFMI. Idk if my bones are hollow and fucking with my numbers or my math is so off.
But first I have to lose the fat. Another 8-15kg of it...

>>77143448
I was in the same boat as you, 6ft 86kg skinnyfat. looked like shit until i hit ~77kg at which point i became at least human shaped. it took cutting to 73kg and a year of progress in the gym for me to have visible abs and minimal belly fat / love handles. You're basically in the right weight range where you could easily be lean and fit, you just need to focus on building muscle at this point. Just keep at it in the gym, train hard eat your protein and eat at maintenance. Your body should easily be able to continue building muscle and losing fat under this conditions for at least a year.
>>
>>77143471
it's a lot easier to understand if you look at it through the lens of FFMI. Your average person will not have a FFMI over 20. Once you have this frame of reference you realize it's literally impossible to be a certain body fat% at a certain weight unless you've spent years in the gym. If that anon has been lifting for 5-10 years then I would believe his estimate to be possible, but most people here haven't even strung multiple months together of significant lifting, hence my doubts

How real is this "metabolic adaptation - starvation mode" bullshit? i keep finding conflicting information, like im not retarded but i wonder if there's some true to this fat cope.

I'm currently doing 1000 calorie deficit, OMAD, i water fast 1 day a week, i was 120 KG February, im now 111, but i have been 111 for about 10 days in a row, 0 progress, is it true my fat body will adapt to my 1000 calorie deficit and slow my progress to a crawl? if true what should i do? should i eat even less calories? should i eat more? stop momentarily dieting then continue? will i just magically drop all this weight tomorrow.
>>
>>77143889
Your body has to run on something, it's simply not possible to go below a minimum caloric daily expenditure which depends on your size and activity
1000 deficit is pretty steep but it might not be depending on how you calculated your initial baseline, could be totally wrong which would explain initial waterweight loss and then the stall
>>
>>77143889
Absolute bullshit. The whole idea of "starvation mode" is literally when you are on the brink of starving to death and your body diverts heat and blood flow away from lower priority processes. Even then the effect has limitations and doesn't actually stop you from starving to death, or you know just losing weight. Not a single overweight western faggot making an incorrect article about it has experienced that suffering.

wisdom pills and truth nukes:
if you fail at dieting you should try different diet to find the one that works best
can't outrun a bad diet
it is possible to get good at losing weight
at that point you understand that maintaining is the difficult part
most people gain back the weight, but you can just diet again
measure and track things routinely
buy a kitchen scale
buy a scale to measure your weight
buy a tape measure to track waist
you don't have to eat everything, you can just throw away food without eating it
running is a drug, possibly useful to abuse when you get to maintain
food is a drug, most noticeable when you some type of fasting
drugs go harder when fasted but be careful
eating makes you more hungry, this is the idea behind appetizers
it can be easier to not eat all than to just a little bit
statistically speaking, only women and gay men get anorexia so if you are not either of those, you should not worry
>>
>>77143889
it is real and well-supported. dramatic to call it "starvation mode" (though i'm not sure how fasting affects it in particular) but it's both that weighing less lowers your energy expenditure proportionally and that there's an extra factor of metabolic downregulation due to long-term calorie restriction that exceeds what you'd expect based on the weight loss. the degree to which this happens varies depending on the person. it shouldn't put a hard stop to your weight loss though, it's probably just an arbitrary plateau that will pass. there is a study that says lifting helps keep your metabolism higher through weight loss: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18356845/
>>
>>77143930
>metabolic downregulation
What downregulation could there possibly be?

Does heartrate slow down?
Not really
Does digestive function slow down? Okay sure, because you're eating less though
Does respiratory function slow down?
Nope
Does filtration/waste management/cell-turnover slow down?
No?

So what could be a possible metabolic downregulation?
Why wouldn't the body always have it downregulated if its that unimportant, after all its more beneficial from a survival standpoint to be efficient with calorie expenditure
>>
>>77143941
>Does heartrate slow down?
one study says yes - dramatic circumstance and small decrease but the idea checks out
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002916523137051
>Does digestive function slow down?
digestive system regulation as a topic is kind of beyond me but reductions in insulin and leptin are also well established as an effect of calorie restriction, see that same study and also this review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9036397/
my understanding of that is that subjective hunger at least will actually increase over time with caloric restriction, can't really find info on how it would directly affect gut motility or anything
>Does respiratory function slow down?
it does actually change respiratory function, first study i linked shows a decrease in respiratory quotient, reducing co2 produced as fat is used as the preferred energy store in a calorie deficit, lowering the respiratory function needed to eliminate the co2.
>Does filtration/waste management/cell-turnover slow down?
don't personally really know anything about how cellular function is affected except that mitochondrial efficiency improves, as in the second paper i linked

of course all of these things are subtle for most people and not a reason why it's impossible for you to weigh less than 500 lbs. but i think the effect is real.

as far as i understand it, restricting calories, having your metabolism downregulate, then finding a new equilibrium where you're maintaining weight with that calorie restriction is a very healthy way to be. not smart enough about historical diets to say whether or when it may have been common to live that way. most people aren't doing it now because of abundant calories in the environment and increased hunger being difficult to cope with.
>>
>>77143941
less growth and repair
lower level of hormones for example the sex hormones
less fidgeting and other involuntary movements
On cellular level there is a process called cellular uncoupling where ATP literally gets burned to make heat, this becomes down regulated more energy gets stored instead of just burned

Have you ever done fasting possibly? Some of these are noticeable. Your body will literally become colder, you get urge to put on more clothes to stay warm, you want to jack off less, you blink eyes less and more lazily.
>>
>>77140689

ie.
Is your cico alright? Make sure.
Try switching up days where you water fast to make your body less used to the cycle.

I personally found a huge mood improvement from increasing the fat in my diet (carefully, and very specific types of fat).
I used to eat about 22% fat because I kind of fell for the "high protein low fat" stuff, but now I eat about 35% fat and feel a lot better. I mostly did it by cutting down my carbs a bit, and shifting my carb intake to immediately before/after training. It gave me far fewer mood swings and less irritability at work and with my toddler. But that was at the same time as eating much healthier overall and I think I might be more finely tuned than the average person, so YMMV.

I had to be careful with my remaining carbs and not going into too much of a deficit though, because if I don't eat enough while still doing a lot of hard running I start getting this really crazy "parasympathetic stress response" (ChatGPT's words) where my heart rate drops to like 50bpm at work while I feel a crazy mixture of stress and despair.

Been really enjoying skinless hake fillets as an alternative to chicken.
it's like 2g of fat and 20g of protein per 100g.
Tried catfish tonight cause breaded catfish is my favorite and 2g fat/10g protein isn't terrible, but non-breaded catfish kinda is. It just has a fatty, uncooked texture despite making sure 10x with a thermometer that it is.

I was able to rep out 8 of them at 225 at my heaviest. I got up to doing them weighted with 20lbs then injured myself in my armpit area. It felt like my shoulder, bicep, and pec all at once. I think it was from going all the way down and nearly locking out between each rep. It's taking months to heal, and in the mean time I decided to start losing weight down to ~180.

Day one complete. I feel fucking sick being fat. Low energy. Imagine carrying a 100 pound sack of cement on your back all day. No wonder I'm exhausts. Doing this OMAD beef and rice thing. Not a lifestyle, just a method to lose weight, feel sated, and not deal with meal planning much till I get to healthy weight. I just have to get to 6pm to eat dinner, which is a little over 1 pound of food. It is quite filling. Have not problem with OMAD. I can do this for a few months no problem. I quite all booze on new years. If I had started with this plan then I'd be down tp 230 pounds by now.
Lord, I can't wait to get to a healthy 175 pounds or so. Anyone get from high 200's down to safely below 200? How it feel? I'm feeling pretty good today. Today was a good day. Will be reporting back with results daily I think, as a form of motivation for myself.

Not that anon but I've basically been doing the same diet, <20g carbs, <30g fat, ~150g protein per day for the last month and I'm down 18 lbs. The crazy thing is, I genuinely don't have any hunger pangs, I don't get cravings and I still have enough energy to walk about 6 miles per day on top of some light rock climbing 2-3x per week. This kicks the shit out of any diet I've tried before, by far.

Don't.

You'll just hate yourself. Actual sex is nothing like glamorous over-the-top acting you see in porn. Take that money you saved up for a hooker and buy yourself some jogging shoes. Make a habit of doing 5¬10 laps around the nearest park/lake where you live everyday.

What actually happens to cause this

Anon you need to buy a food scale and weigh your food. The serving size and calories is based on the grams. You can easily fit double the real serving size in a 1/4 cup measuring spoon.

Every food in the US is also sold in grams. That anon needs to learn how to accurately count calories.

I'm in that spot where I won't live that much longer fit or fat. Some days I wonder why I am even trying since even if I magically woke up tomorrow in perfect shape it's way to late to have a family or a meaningful career. The things I dreamed of as a kid like owning my own business or having a bunch of kids are just fantasies. Getting fit now would just make the last bit of my life a little less physically painful. It can't help me mentally or give me back the things I lost. A few more years to play games and work a soul crushing job. Yay...
I'm not saying other people shouldn't try to get fit. But if you wait too long you lose most of the benefits. Hopefully reincarnation is the true religion and my soul gets a second chance. It's probably just oblivion though and the one opportunity I had was mostly wasted.
