I want to start doing judo. What should I look for in a gym, and what advice would those of you that have experience give to a newbie?

Go there and ask. /fit/ is gay and doesn't know how to fight nor wants to learn. Just bulk and find gay fuckbuddies to bug catch with. That's the end goal here. Extreme sports has threads on how to use that bulk.

normally theres not much choice...whatever club is available in town

judo tends to be better than bjj/mma crowd. much more normal people go there, kids, parents, etc. it does get very competitive as well though

Judo is tough because it's barely a thing in the US. Every school I went to sucked, and many of them don't even take adult white belts since they have no future in competition.
A good school needs to have a sprung floor. Basically the floor is elevated a few inches off the ground and you should feel it spring inside when you hit it. This makes falls safer.
It's way easier to find a good BJJ school.

Relax your arms
Attack by coming under and in rather than straight in
When you pull them, attack where they're going to be, not where they are now

OP tell us what city you live in do we can vet clubs.

In general, if the club is clean and has adult classes with randori (sparring) you are likely good to go.

Randori vid for inspiration

I’ve been going to a bjj gym and hopping into the judo classes as well. Overall it’s a chill experience and they’ll get you right pretty quick.
