>Who is /fat/ for?
For obesity obliterators who are working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Not that much of a difference, it was the cans of coke, burger and fries that came with coke, sugar in coffee etc. Also I didn't exercise back then, at all, like zero.

I stopped drinking sugar and now I exercise in the summer, that's literally all it takes to be normal. I want to go beyond normal now though so I'm on the chicken, vegetables and rice diet.

My appetite is unchanged. I never really struggled with it. I get hungry later in the day but thats half boredom. If I just remain occupied, its fine.

Idk how much you eat on most days, but if its 800cal, thats honestly less than what I eat most days. I also get around 70-120k steps in a week, however, and where I live is fairly hilly.

Your protein consumption is hella low and I'd probably have appetite issues. I've attached a usual day of eating. I did not log supplements or calorie free food.

Thinking about fasting. Any advice?
>>
Ive been trying for 2 months now. Im basically just starving myself. I started at 262 pounds and am down to 248. The only exercise I do is walk at least 10k to 12k steps a day. Before I would barely hit 1k a day.

Ive been using the myfitness pal app. Its saying I should be having 2,299 calories a day, I rarely hit 1500. A lot of the time its not even 1,000.

I struggle hitting their Fat and carb macro. I dont really change what I eat now. its chicken, salad, sometimes rice, or a protein drink. I dont deviate from those choices.

I absolutely fucking hate my "beer belly". And I haven't even had alcohol in 15 years now. Cant wait for this shit to be gone

is this too fast?

I'm somewhat terrified of loose skin, more so since it apparently would take a year of wait for surgery to remove it and another for the scars to fade even a little
im +30 years old so im not sure what supplements/food/creams i should take help
im aiming to slim down 25kg from current 100kg, but my starting weight was 150kg and i have pre-existing shit on my skin from previous attempt of losing weight and gaining weight in the first place, does it even matter at this point if i take it slower, down to 0,5 or 1kg a week at most i probably should see a doctor for this shit instead of asking random internet strangers?

Once I paid off my student loans. I had spending money. I was eating takeout every other day. And grocery trips would be snacks and cakes. I would finish a whole box of party anything in a day. I would shrug and buy another. My takeout was usually McDonald's. Double quarter pounder. Mcchicken, two mcdoubles. Large fries. I thank the heavens I love seltzer water. I always drink seltzer water. Regardless I ballooned up to 308-312.

I am now 283 and feel happy I switched to clean eating. Thinking about oreos and McDonald's kind of disgusts me now. I just think how it's all just fried slop. What I cook at home doesn't have the same flavor. But it still tastes amazing. Ground beef or turkey mixed into a bowl of rice is incredible. Chicken thighs cooked in the oven in its own juices. I can make scrambled eggs and potatos. Carrots and peas. And eat a watermelon. Protein shakes taste like icecream when you add a bit of milk. I got frozen veggies and dripping some hot sauce on it gives it a great taste.

So yeah. I like eating clean now. And I don't fuck with keto. I just make sure everything is simple ingredients.
>>
>>77417560
TDEE - What you eat = deficit
Deficit * 7 / 7700 (3500 for lbs) = kg of fat you'll lose in a week

For example, mine is
2200 - 1000 = 1200
1200 * 7 / 3500 = 2.4

Now, my median weight drops ~3lbs a week so my TDEE is actually more like 2500.

You either calculated your TDEE wrong, don't have enough of a deficit, are counting calories wrong, or didn't setup a deficit that will actually lose you the weight you want. Now, 2kg a month is respectable, but you can do much better.

Not worth it if you have an eating disorder. You're just going to pig out when the fast is over. The sticky is the way. High protein calorie defecit.

If you wanna do it for health reasons like autophagy, or a personal challenge. I suppose it can help. Advice? Don't do anything physically intense, and sleep as often as you can. Food noise will be intense.

Honestly its not worth it for weight loss.

Day 2
Well there she goes. Her first weigh in since starting her fast. And look at that. About 10 pounds of water weight gone. She's already looking so good but she believes that it's mostly water weight.
Due to her extended fasting she is now consuming water with salt potassium and magnesium.
She's beginning to realize how much her schedule is/was consumed by food preparation and eating. Without it she has a lot of free time and also a lot of boredom. But she's keeping herself busy.
>>77417182
Fasting is a very good way to lose weight quickly. However it is not without it's own risks. If you do it improperly you WILL end up in the hospital or worse. Anything less than 3 days is likely safe however. Remember to stay hydrated, people often won't realize how much water is in their food so if they intentionally consume the same amount of water while eating no food they'll be dehydrated which is very bad. Consume salt potassium and magnesium if you're going over 3 days. Intermittent fasting/OMAD can work for some people and it's way less stressful on your body and unless you have some unusual health conditions should be relatively safe for almost anyone.
The best diet is one you can stick to indefinitely . if you can't stomach fasting without bingeing afterwards then it's probably not your weight loss solution.
>>
>>77417688
So the sticky is for reddit*rs and women, too?
>>
>>77417711
Nothing in the sticky promotes your retarded bullshit. Starvation mode is a myth perpetuated but retarded foids like you.
>>
>>77417721
It literally does:
>Starvation is bad, OK?
>Weight loss is largely a matter of reducing calories and increasing activity. So if 500 fewer calories a day than you need to maintain is good, 2000 less is better, right? Not really. Because below a certain threshold, your body thinks you are one of those starving refugees on TV, and does a bunch of things that hurt your long-term weight loss.
>Read that again: starving is a bad way to lose weight.
>Why this is so:
>Your metabolism slows down. Your body will burn fewer calories to maintain itself, and you will feel awful. This is bad for weight loss because as soon as you quit starving yourself, you'll gain weight fast because your metabolism has bottomed out.
>You will tend to lose muscle more than fat. Your body will naturally try to conserve fat and cannibalize muscle if it thinks it is outright starving. This is bad because your real goal is FAT loss, not weight loss. This is how you have people who lose 100 pounds and reach their "ideal" weight, but still look amazingly flabby. Also, losing muscle slows your metabolism down even further, amplifying the giant horrible rebound effect once you quit starving yourself.
>Your life will be a living hell. You'll eventually feel horrible, the diet will fail, and you'll binge eat and regain everything you lost, plus interest.
>You want to run a clear-cut, but tolerable calorie deficit to sustain weight loss over the long term. Very obese people may be put on very low calorie diets by their doctor, but these are medically supervised and designed for people who need to lose weight now or suffer severe health problems. Be safe and stick to 500 fewer calories a day than you burn, which is the equivalent of one pound lost per week.

A 2021 systemic review, Nunes CL, Casanova N, Francisco R, et al., found that after weight stabilization, apparent adaptive thermogenesis to not be statistically significant. It also found that studies with better methodology produced smaller or nonsignificant RMR adaptation.

Loss in skeletal muscle is not a concern with adequate protein and resistance training. People doing complete fasts are likely losing muscle which is why I don't advocate for total fasting.

>>
>>77417952
where are you seeing 30 miles?
>>
>>77417952
When I was like 100 kg + I would not walk for more than an hour a day most of the time, so that's like 5 km (not counting just walking around the house or something in between sitting), maybe a bit more some times, on vacations.
These days I walk for a couple of hours, sometimes even more, but my legs are still not quite used to that, certainly not for 3 hours (so like 15 km) but it's probably best if I just lost more weight and then started to increase the walking time.

If you are indeed eating 1500/day, you would be losing about 1lbs a week, but you ain't so you are eating more than you think. A 5 month plateau is just impossible at that calorie count.

Idk how much you make, but my monthly groceries are:
$25 for 10lbs of frozen chicken breast
$28 for 36 cups of Oikos triple zero yogurt
$30 for 8lbs pork tenderloin
$40 for 4lbs of sirloin
$10 for 12 romaine hearts
$8 for 4 bags of frozen broccoli
$28 for 48 cans of diet dr. pepper
$60 for 28 sugar free monster energies
$8 for 36 string cheeses

With other stuff like low calorie dressing, lite salt, supplements, etc. that comes to $250/mn which is very cheap. About $8 a day. My membership at Sam's, where I shop for all this stuff, is only $60 a year.

Idk of any other explanation that doesn't involve you needing to see a doctor and have labs done to get diagnosed or your scale just being broken. At 1500cal/day, you should be losing, at minimum, 1lbs a week. So, you're either eating more than you're tracking or need thyroid meds or something.

I trust your count was accurate for 200 to 180 unless it took you more than ~22 weeks.

Goal- 175-185

Things are going pretty good. I've done a huge cut to that range before and maintained for several years.

I'm going low carb and heavily calorie restricted but supplementing heavily with protein powder / shakes. Normally eating two meals a day at around 500-600 calories each, a protein shake in the morning and one at night either after working out or with dinner.

Mostly bodyweight exercises but I have been doing a lot of weighted walking. I'm up to a 50 lb rucksack and doing 4-5 miles a day at a 3 to 4 mph pace (walking the dogs on a hiking trail). Plenty of up and down on that.

Also, this past week I officially went from obese to just plain overweight. So I am slightly less of a fatass from an objective POV.
>>
Ironically I'm obsessing way more over food than I ever was while 'eating garbage' and I don't think this is healthy. Before I would just eat whatever as long as it wasn't super high calorie and then space out my meals based on how many calories the last thing I ate was. If I got take out it would be so filling that it would be like my one meal of the day. I'd be too distracted with obsessing over whatever had my interest at the time and sometimes go hours and hours past my meal time.

Now food and fitness is my obsession and that's all I'm thinking about constantly which is causing me to eat more than before. I'm also getting cravings for things that I haven't wanted to eat in decades.

I'm still thinking the only change I really needed to make to my life was not to eat handfuls of chips or nuts or a cookie here and there when I walked past the kitchen.
>>
>>77418316
>I'm up to a 50 lb rucksack

How do you do this without destroying your collarbones? I've got a real military assault pack designed to carry heavy things and I put some plates in there and holy shit after a few km I wanted to kms from the pressure on my collar bones and the weight being so low down on my back.
>>
>>77418326

I was hurting pretty bad with a normal backpack until I bought one of those overpriced goruck bags, it has a fuckhuge pad for lumbar support. The day I got it I went from 30 lbs of pain to 40 lbs of relative comfort on my first trip with it. Expensive but if it avoids an injury, worthwhile. They were on sale last month.

Also using square plates that are form fitting so they don't move or irritate your back. I have a bad lower back from an old injury and this is a really good and low impact way so far for me.

I've been having success with protein fasting. I eat nothing but chicken breast, egg whites, tuna, and water with protein powder. I do this for 3 days, have an off day to recover and cook, and then back to it another 3 days.
I tried water fasting before and it was a nightmare compared to this, P-fasting is infinitely less torturous with the only drawback being the constant cooking.

Thank you. I've gone from 6XL to fitting comfortably within XL.
Since I've been strength training the entire way through, I've definitely noticed the gradual changes, as I push further below 300 I'm starting to notice a lot changing even while walking.
The best part is that biking is now my main mode of transport, I can now go so many more places rather than feeling entirely confined to cars I could barely fit into.

I would definitely warn people not to stop doing particular lifts. I got lazy about squats and deadlifts and then returning to those became injury-prone which definitely made the start of this year a brutal experience. I think changing your body significantly over relatively short periods of time makes it very difficult to safely perform technical lifts.

The crazy thing is that I'm finding myself "taking things for granted" already despite losing the weight relatively quickly. Day to day I'm still obsessed with how much further I have to go, but it's weird because I'm already in the best shape I've been in my entire adult life.

>inb4 GLP1s

No shade on those who take em, but in my case I didn't go that route. When I was starting out I was doing my best to stick to Lyle McDonald's RFL, but these days I'm enjoying doing more cardio (biking around for fun) I'm very grateful that I've gone so far towards building an actually healthy lifestyle (Getting active & outdoors, cooking for myself, and taking better care of myself generally) that I'm honestly no longer afraid of relapsing.

I don't lurk much of the rest of /fit/ but I absolutely want to say that /fat/ has a special place in my heart. You guys all rock and we're all gonna make it.

Why are you thinking about food?
Are you anxious/stressed and trying to cope?
Address those root causes and/or build resilience and other healthy coping mechanisms.
Make sure you're getting enough protein & fiber.
Make sure you're properly hydrated.
Make sure you're sleeping enough and at proper times.

/fat/bros, i think Vitamin D supplementation actually reduces hunger. i'm very deficient in it and us fatties are most likely deficient too because the fat we have steals it.
i've been easily maintaining less than 1500 calories for the past month when i started taking Vitamin D.
the HUNGER i've been suffering from for months is gone even on a high carb low protein diet. i've averaged 166g carbs, 47g protein, and 63g fat in the past month.
please add this to the OP. this is a piss easy way to help with hunger.

hunger associated with Vitamin D deficiency
>Appetite disturbances were significantly associated with increased odds of Vitamin D deficiency, even after controlling for depression and other confounders. However, due to the cross-sectional design, causality cannot be inferred. Prospective studies are needed to clarify this association's directionality and underlying mechanisms.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1499404625002660

Vitamin D helping in weight loss
>After using vit D supplementation for 6 weeks, WT (weight), WC (waist circumference), and body mass index (BMI) were decreased significantly and serum vit D increased significantly compared to control group
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6071442/

us fatties having lower vitamin D
>High prevalence of vitamin D (VD) deficiency in obese subjects is a well-documented finding, most probably due to volumetric dilution into the greater volumes of fat, serum, liver, and muscle, even though other mechanisms could not completely be excluded, as they may contribute concurrently
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6780345/

5'7, 168lbs. I want to be 140lbs so I have ~30lbs to lose. To be at the BMI I want to be, you'd have to be 150 so we're similarly overweight. Though you might be happy ar 170, 165, 160, etc.

My plan is to RFL the rest way to my goal over the next 2-3 months then do a lean bulk for the next year. Thats 200cal above maintenance btw. But I don't appetite issues and you might.

Since you're immobile from your surgery, I doubt your doctor would approve of you lifting even once you regain the ability to walk. Also, depending on the surgery, you may need more calories to recover properly. Generally, dedicated cutting and [lean] bulking cycles are better.

>>77418619
I hadn't visited a doctor since I was 18 and I went from 400lbs down to 160lbs before actually getting insurance and seeing a doctor again for the first time in like 17 years, at which point I asked about GLP-1s and they were like "umm, they're only for obese people you moron" and I was like shit maybe I should binge my way back up to 400lbs so I can get them, but decided not to. I still struggle with hunger and sticking to my diet, but I guess I'm okay, I apparently don't "need" them since I lost the weight without them, but damn it would be nice to have them just to get the monkey off my back telling me to binge every now and then.

I googled it then read the actual studies that were cited.

1: It isn't 25%-40% lean *muscle* mass. Its 25%-40% lean mass, which includes water, glycogen, extracellular tissue, organs, skin, stomach content, etc.
2: Rossi et al. concluded "Integrated strategies combining adequate protein intake, resistance exercise, and, where appropriate, emerging pharmacological interventions can help preserve or restore muscle mass."
3: There is no reason to believe that GLP-1as cause the body to prefer skeletal muscle over fat mass. There is no reason to believe they cause weight loss via any other method than appetite suppression. Unless we find the weight loss by GLP-1a is somehow unique physiologically, then body comp losses should be expected to follow normal weight loss.
3a: Considering 3, then PSMF studies revealing that adequate protein and resistance training prevent skeletal muscle loss.

I used to be /fit/ as fuck, worked out 4 times a week and went out running, had an active job that kept me honest too. But during COVID i developed a sedentary lifestyle that never went away
I’ve probably gained 250lbs since COVID and i cant fucking lose it

I would avoid pharmaceuticals because they cause extreme muscle loss, bone density loss, diseases like cancer, blindness, etc. You regain the weight after you quit the drugs. And they make you look bad people are calling it 'ozempic face'.

With unlimited calorie carnivore you can lose weight without loose skin and without losing muscle.
>>
>>77418775
there is 0 chance i could possibly regain hundreds of pounds after losing it
i just need help getting the ball rolling like ive said before
my problem isnt necessarily eating junk food all the time, my problem is portions my body craves Olympic weight lifter portions while i sit and do nothing all day and the medication will end that craving and allow me to develop a routine to break the cycle of eating like a fucking pig, at the same time i will force myself to go out and at least start walking and curling dumbbells again until i lose enough weight to start actually working out again
im so fucking fat right now that i cant even work out anymore
i dont want to sound like im making excuses for myself but again i get it, im weak, i need the help to get the ball rolling

Cravings and overeating go away if you stop eating carbs. It's really very easy. Eat unlimited calorie zero carb. That fixes the problems with hunger. Maybe fast once a week.

Here's an excellent video on the subject:
https://youtu.be/Ev82CiMn9Rw
>>
>>77418779
To be clear: unlimited calorie zero carb IS the help that you need. You don't have to be hungry. You don't have to avoid eating. You don't have to ignore cravings. Just eat something zero carb whenever you want.

After a few days you'll notice you eat less and think about food less. From there it is easy to start adding fasting to your routine.

no, after a few days all i can think about is devouring a heaping plate of chicken alfredo and a loaf of garlic bread
Thats why i said i feel like im a perfect subject for GLP-1
used to have a decent fitness routine and relationship with food, then lost it and need help to regain a balance to get back on track
I CAN do this, i just cant get the fucking ball rolling anymore. On diets i break after a week or so, on exercise i break not long after because “well i already fucked my diet up why keep exercising”

I'm 100% you'll need surgery. And honestly that's not a bad thing, because it's pretty obvious looking to your belly area that you'll have a ton of loose skin. Don't waste your time thinking about some miraculous help to avoid it. Embrace it. You'll be alright post surgery.

The problem is people like me, in a gray area, I'm not that bad but I lost 30kg and have more ~10kg to go... I'm obsessive/terrified about it as well. Probably I'll need it.

GLP1s are the most important tool in your arsenal. But you need to recomp, i.e. Gym. I know you don't like it and you are embarrassed by it, we all were. Truth is no one cares in the gym. If you don't know what to do in the gym just hire a personal trainer for some workouts or start to learn about it on YouTube.
>>
>>77419136
It only gets worse. I did keto and pushed beyond 2 weeks. The hairloss is real.
>>
>>77418602
AND learn about macros.
Protein: 2g/kg and that's it. The most important. Don't overthink it.
Carbs: You need it for recomp and gym. There's no workout, muscles, recomp, without carbs. WE KNOW WE KNOW ABOUT KETO AND BLABLA THIS IS A MEMEDIET NO ONE USE APART AS A TOOL HERE AND THERE FOR SHORT PERIODS. NEVER TALK ABOUT IT AGAIN, YOU AREN'T SPECIAL OR SMART, YOU'RE JUST DUMB AND DON'T KNOW ANYTHING.
Fat: keep it low and only from olive oil, no sugar peanut butter, etc

PS: Yes PSMF/RFL is good, but as a tool. Lyle knows that and is in the book. You can't even train during the diet (because you NEED carbs).

PS:

>Preferential fat accumulation in visceral vs. subcutaneous depots makes obese individuals more prone to metabolic complications. Body fat distribution (FD) is regulated by genetics. FD patterns vary across ethnic groups independent of obesity. Asians have more and Africans have less visceral fat compared with Europeans. Consequently, Asians tend to be more susceptible to type 2 diabetes even with lower BMIs when compared with Europeans. To date, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 460 loci related to FD traits
https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4425/12/6/841

>Studies reported that for the same BMI, Asians have a higher body fat percentage, a prominent abdominal obesity, a higher intramyocellular lipid and/or a higher liver fat content compared to Caucasians. These characteristics may contribute to a higher predisposition to insulin resistance at a lesser degree of obesity than Caucasians. The differences in body composition are more pronounced depending on the region. For the same BMI, among three major ethnic groups in Asia, Asian Indians have the highest body fat, followed by Malay and Chinese.
