Do you think 16GB RAM is overkill for a NAS hosting Jellyfin and shared network file storing?
>>107742223no, it's not. you can always find a way to use ram.
>>107742160I generally don't get why people in this thread regularly go out of their way to get a board without IPMI/equivalent only to then bitch a few threads later that they don't have remote management capabilities on a $100 board from aefuioaheuifiuahefiuahsodpamcsylonjfhiuhwaiughd llc. registered in Ching Chong Street 69, Shenzhen.I understand not wanting to spend 2k on a new supermicro board or any workstation board really but come the fuck on used and older gen server/workstation boards are dirt fucking cheap.
>>107742223My NAS that also runs Emby Server and some Apache pages for testing and some python automation scripts has only 8GB of RAM and the CPU is an Intel J5040
I'm looking for a low powered nas. Mostly for storage, occasionally for Jellyfin. My current setup is three 5tb drives in a mini drawer attached to a 4-1 USB hub to my linux machine, pic related, which I will continue to use til it dies.Would a UGREEN NAS DXP2800 be good? A barebones AOOSTAR WTR PRO Intel Twin Lake N150 is the same price, but no ram and ssd. One NVME slot too, though I'm not sure if I'm gonna want a cache drive.
I'm just not gonna update, is all.I have 1st gen Intel i7 CPU.Windows 7.Supermium browser: a helpful man who solely creates this browser had recently popped out a new version and now all web pages once again work flawlessly.

I just bought a 32Gib 512nvme i7-9850H quadro t1000 with a 4k panel for $400 on eBay (and uncle sam fucked me for 40 in taxes and 20 in shipping)--and I am regretting it and wish I bought the cheaper $330 1080p 48gib option but bought this one because I thought that the 4k panel might be good since 1080p is a bit bad for split screen latex but am now regretting it since it will- Drain battery faster (might take up 20% extra)- Be a pain to use because I will be forced to set it to 200% scaling for a good experience with my external 1080p monitors (probably, I have never used 4k but xorg will likely strangle me too)- Cost more- Doesn't have as much ram- At 15.6" and normal sitting, I probably won't ever noticeI don't think it has been shipped yet but also don't want to try to return it since that might make me an asshole...I will have to go check if the seller even accepts returns...I am really crying over this...why is life so hard?

Purely from a business perspective, the way AI companies are moving to buy as much hardware as possible recently is really making me raise an eyebrow. We know that venture capital funding for these companies is basically gone, AI stocks flatlined over the past few months or, in the case of some like Meta and Oracle, went down quite a bit.All they can rely on right now is their circular investments and I think what they're trying to do is just turn that cash into real assets with the expectation that the models will just scale themselves, and investors will again be convinced to put money into the system again. This is of course augmented by the fact that companies like Nvidia, AMD, and Micron are the ones giving Open AI and Microsoft hundreds of billions to turn right back around and buy products from Nvidia, AMD, and Open AI.Throughout the cycle we just haven't been seeing the uncapped colossal buy orders we saw at the end of 2025. So what's the endpoint here? When the manufacturers are paying companies to buy their own products and investors aren't seeing the business turn profitable, what happens next? Where does the fire's fuel come from?

>>107741790>The difference in vibe around computers and technology up until around 2005 cannot be understatedI'd extend that to the late 2000s, because of my zoomer bias and the fact that smartphone faggotry didn't start infecting PCs until around 2011/2012 with GNOME 3 and Windows 8, but yeah that's what I was getting at. Honestly, I've recently found myself questioning whether romanticizing historic computing culture is even justifiable anymore, since we're all witnessing the hellish aftermath of it - the rehashed 2010s /pol/shit from earlier in this thread is a good example - but Cheifet's death feels like a reminder that we need more stubborn autists to carry its torch now more than ever. I don't think I'll ever stop seething over the fact that this industry invested so much time and money into normalizing general-purpose computing in every home and (seemingly) trying to collectively enhance our human potential, just so they could throw it all away in favor of hawking Mossad spyware, smart toilets with ads, vibecoded webshit, and retarded chatbots that magically generate fake cheese pizza instead. >>107743201>multi-decade old codebases powering innumerable businesses todayI work on a server-side application from the 90's which uses all major Java build systems at the same time, looks as if it tried to implement 3 distinct architectural styles and whose test suite takes at least 7 hours to run on a good day. >>107742968>you're not required to seperate just because. you can very well use just 1 VM for everything if it's OK in your threat model. If that's the case, then you shouldn't use Qubes to begin with because it offers no extra value over Linux when it's used in such a way.
>>107743013except wrong. you still get the benefit of dom0 disaggregation and being able to clean wipe your workflow with a few simple clicks without total compromisation.not including App VMs' root being immutable as a benefit here, because despite that it making the process more convoluted, the malware persistence can happen through different ways (re-infection through an unpatched program). Still, it creates an extra step for an attacker and makes things harder / blocks some attempts.
>>107742007anon... when you run an AppVM, you are running QEMU/KVM on top of Xen. you can see it in the list of processes running in Xen.>You have to compromise XEN from dom0 (VERY UNLIKELY)why would you need to compromise the whole system? if you want to get user data, you can just compromise the AppVM where the target user's data is, or, in some cases, the template VMs.since there is communication between AppVMs and the main VM in dom0, you could also compromise that, maybe.and then there is the routed AppVM. get that and you could jump everywhere (assuming you have the correct exploits).ever heard of user-mode malware, like zeus? assuming you need to compromise everything to gain user data is retarded. it shows that you clearly have no idea about security, even if your argument is "technical".whonix is also an AppVM, btw.

Also KVM is not used in QubesOS at all. QEMU is used for stub device domains for HVM qubes or sys-usb / sys-network / other pci device qubes (which are all HVM qubes again because you can't passthrough into a PVH qube apperantly).>if you want to get user data, you can just compromise the AppVM that's up to you as a user to compartmentalize your system according to your threat model>the template VMs.template VMs don't even run other than for being updated over a restricted update proxy (let's not call it completely restricted but it doesn't matter much because all it connects to is distros' repository servers)>since there is communication between AppVMs and the main VM in dom0dom0 is the main VM. the only connection is Xen backend drivers and yes they're included in the TCB.
