Ryzen 1700 user here, bought it 1 month after the release of Zen 1, still has respectable performance, for a 8-year old CPU. It's impressive really, for reference think of using an Athlon 64 in 2012, would be a nightmare to run anything on it. Yet a CPU of same age nowadays is perfectly fine for most everyday tasks and even games that are not CPU intensive.

Seems kind of useless. You're not going to be able to take full advantage of its speed over USB. You could get a SATA SSD of the same capacity for cheaper. Choosing NVMe over SATA makes sense in most cases, but I'm not sure there would be an advantage in this case, since you're running over USB.

A thermal throttling NVMe is still faster than a SATA SSD

If you're using external nvme, be sure to get a USB dock that its hooked up to, because you need a stable external power source. Plugging it directly to laptop or PC USB port might not give you enough power, and might shut itself down or give you slower speeds.
