I don't like auto or "var" either. One of the benfits of using C and C# instead of just coding everything in Javascript or Python is that you have a decent type system that lets you explicitly specify what kind of data is held in a variable.
The fact is, I'm perfectly happy with C89, and even if you give me a C11 compiler I'll end up writing C89 code anyway.

You can override a udev rule pretty easily. It was probably in vials documentation to set a mode=0666 udev rule or an example udev rule was in their own git repo. Change it to an input group and hope nothing breaks.
