I am currently in possession of a Dell Precision 5550 my school gave me and didn't ask for back; this happened 1.5-2 years ago so I forgot I even had it. I would like to use this as a personal laptop to replace my old desktop; however, the BIOS is locked, and it is running heavily restricted Windows, making it practically just a web browser.I have already read a fair bit about how this is difficult but all info regarding actually unlocking it doesn't work--any advice? Is there a reliable way to do this without having to do anything to the BIOS chips? I am fairly technical but currently do not have access to the required tools for soldering/chip flashing. I do not have a USB-C flashdrive, but since I can't even open BIOS boot order due to admin lock, I doubt it would work.Laptop model: Dell Precision 5550Bios Version: 1.22.0BIOS Mode: UEFICPU: i7-10750HGPU: Quadro T2000 (Max-Q Design)RAM: 32GiBShould this be unfeasible/too painful, I am thinking of buying a ThinkPad P53 as an alternative.I can provide more specifics if need be.

>>107688604>>inb4 the Password is Blank. In case it really was, I just tried "", "Blank", "blank", and "bLANK", but none of those work--as expected.
>>107685180>(De)soldering SMDs on a laptop where making a single mistake would likely destroy it completely isn't a great risk to take when the laptop still has resale value. Buying a programmer and soldering gear is extra money that could just be put towards a P53 instead, which is a better laptop and is vastly more upgradable.so basically you're a criminal , and you're trying to flip a laptop you stole.
>>107688536>isn't the password stored in the NVRAM/ECUsually that's the same chip as the BIOS because of cost saving reasons. Stinkpads might be different depending on the revision. Also I am writing this from a P53 right now. It came with a GPU fan where all the blades had shattered, and I had to buy a replacement heatsink assembly with both fans. The replacement fan also rattles and is close to dying. Replacing the fans, heatskin, or just applying thermal paste requires a full disassembly of the whole laptop and is a nightmare. Skip this one if you don't necessarily need the touchpad buttons
>blows the fuck out of you're kernel level anti cheatthis is fucking hilarious. doesn't matter if apex, valorant, rust, cs2 faceit or any other league. any FPS is currently unplayable because kids run color/ML aimbots on their second pc and forward inputs to their gayming pc with this 40$ passthrough device. and all the jeet AC devs are too stupid to write an aimbot detection algo that doesn't result in 6 million false positive bans. (the valorant jeets literally used their RAT malware anticheat to check&ban players that stream a centered screen region which is smaller than 512x512 pixels).

>>107684721you can just change the battery yourself in nearly any wireless device. We did it nearly 20 years ago on PS3 controllers. Just google 3.7v lipo battery and get the biggest mAh pack you fit, easy peasy. Just know it'll take forever to charge if its too large. I have a 3000mAh lipo battery and a TMK controller (https://1upkeyboards.com/shop/controllers/hasu-fc980c-controller/) I can go around 3 months without charging. I use this keyboard for work so its at least on and not on standby 8 hours a day minimum. Battery life of course varies by keyboard settings and whatever bullshit you have on it.

>>107686657ignoring any implication that you're pro AI here, in a world with slop content being made by real humans for ad revenue and profit, I am hoping for some kind of art/music renaissance if we reach a point where all art/music commissioned work becomes automated since it'll just leave people making stuff for passion. I have the xwitter thread fatigue
I’ve been running Linux Mint for over four years and was happy with it until the recent drama, especially the AI security scan fiasco. It really shook my trust in the maintainers.I started looking for alternatives, but after testing hundreds of distros, none of them met my expectations for stability and reliability. I began to accept that my system would just break from time to time until I found a thread recommending Windows Seven as a rock-solid alternative. After researching, it turns out this version is still surprisingly usable. It’s stable, reliable, and with extended updates plus a good firewall, security isn’t a major issue.Has anyone else tried this? How did it go for you? Personally, I haven’t run into a single problem so far.
