READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

_Bool is available since C99. The biggest problem in C is the lack of some sort of bounds-checking mechanism due to the conflation of pointers to single elements and arrays. Second biggest problem is lack of rudimentary templates or at least a hygenic macro system if you think the former is yucky. Third biggest problem is lack of operator overloading.
However everyone speaks C (build systems, nulang FFIs, OS ABI, etc) and you can port C code to basically anything so there is still a lot of value in the language and I still use it for many things.

Can we get a cool tech thread going? Pic rel. I just got one of these and it's pretty dope. I wish I could figure out how to configure it to use it's soundbank for creation though in Reaper using reacontrol. I can do that with the soundfonts I put on it like the SC-55 but the MT-32 mode doesn't seem to work. Definitely worth it though if you're into anything old school or planning on emulation old games from the 90s since a real MT-32 is like $300.

Maybe the ultimate web dev solution is React Native. It can produce a website as well as a native smartphone app, from the same codebase. These days people want apps. So if you make your website and it becomes successful, such that people want an app, you don't have to write an app from scratch. Your codebase will already produce a native smartphone app.

Am I right? I think I am.
>>
>>107710821
Just make a PWA, wrap it in a WebView and throw that on the Play Store. Dealing with mobile fucking sucks
>>
Am I the only one who just rawdogs PHP for everything?
>>
>>107710956
Apparently Apple will reject your app if it's just a PWA within a web view:
>Your app should include features, content, and UI that elevate it beyond a repackaged website. If your app is not particularly useful, unique, or “app-like,” it doesn’t belong on the App Store.
https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#minimum-functionality

With React Native you can make a PWA (one that feels quite "app-like") and deploy it on the internet. Then later on if you want a proper native iOS/Android app in each app store, you can produce native apps from your codebase without much extra effort.

No. You don't get enough energy for it.
The energy requirements of a simple watch movement and the cheapest smartwatch/band is vastly different.
Like a CR2250 can run your watch for 10 years, and the best you get out of a smartband is a couple weeks.
