READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I used to have the same confusion. Now i self host cctv, home automation, automated torrenting, and a network share. If i spent enough time traveling, I would probably also self host something analogous to Netflix and Spotify. I could also self host a password manager and have my phone back up my photo library to a photo manager.

>psuedo seedbox
server is set to automatically reboot if it loses power and i have a VM configured to only connect to the internet through a VPN & it auto starts the torrent client & VPN upon boot, makes it so i dont have to manage my torrents on a computer that actually use and have to worry about network issues from the VPN or keeping it turned on so it seeds or finishes a download
also pretty much a requirement for private trackers for seeding requirements
i can manage the torrent client via a web browser as well on my network so i can manage it from my daily driver devices(laptop & phone)

>data hoarding
mainly for movies, tv shows, anime, etc. but if theres something i like, i try to download it so i will always have it
i also back up older games so i just have it, i dont trust it will always be available
i also digitize documents & put copies of digital things i get on there along with also just backing up photos and whatnot, lets me just stuff the documents into a safe and if i need to view it, i just check the server

>plex/jellyfin
just lets me stream all the movies and whatnot, i can also share access with family when they want to watch a particular movie or TV show

thinking this server needs a bit of loving, shame that everything is priced to shit
>>
>>107621526
It is, I have a setup like this at home, thin clients connecting to VMs running on a Proxmox server. I use Parsec for the streaming, it's designed for gaming so it's fast and the video quality is great as well, but it costs a lot if you want multi-monitor connections and you need an account :/. Internet works, it needs to be fast on both ends, but it works well enough for non-action games or work.
>>107621606
You can buy ram and storage in bulk, get 1 CPU with lots of cores and 1 fast GPU and then split it across multiple VMs. If you have multiple clients you can save on cost that way. I initially set it up like this since I wanted a separate personal and work pc, but now I also have my kids' PCs running on the same network. You also get the advantage of being able to manage everything in one place, full backups and health stuff is easy since you can use the same infrastructure as your services, and instead of having a large, loud computer case take up space and make noise in every room, you just have a rack in a closet somewhere.

have you seem memory prices? from rust drives to RAM, its all fucked
just from storage & RAM on my gaming computer and server, it would have cost me an extra $1,200 if i built it now, presuming i could even find it in stock
you also get a fairly massive performance hit when running games in a VM & theres the issue that modern games are all unoptimized and bank on DLSS to get a decent FPS, which you cant do in a VM, gotta run that bare metal to use DLSS
if its all old games, sure it makes sense

Are small phones finally making a comeback? I just bought picrel, moving from almost 6 years old
Xiaomi Mi 9T
.
So far:
+Fits my hobbit hands well (arguably the most important factor for my choice)
+I trust google preinstalled apps more than xiaomi
+120hz screen is nice
+better haptics
+very good battery
+flat back
-back is plastic (though I use phone case so w/e)
-big notch
-reverse physical button order and navigation button order
-only gorilla glass 3
-only 23W charging (making full charge take about 90-120 minutes)
-120hz is not permanent

Yes for modern standards that's a small phone
>>

modern standards can fuck right off then

an iphone 8 plus (guess what the plus stood for) had a 5.5" screen
>>
>>107620438
I am done spending hundreds on expensive smartphones, I am going to buy a cyberdeck or handheld Linux computer because phones don't have the screen size I want but laptops are too big for my needs and tablets are just as restrictive as phones, and I don't want Apple or Google having admin/root control over my device

So the uConsole or the Mecha Comet would work nicely with an arm Linux distro

Want to stop "antimalware service executable" from taking up 30% of my CPU? I have to edit the registry, group policy editor, make a deal with satan and it still does not die
The only thing that works better in windows is games (and some shitty photoshop apps that everyone totally uses since everyone is a youtuber/streamer/content creator when it comes time to complain about linux)

i imagine there is some targeted advertisement that works, because its what you actually want to see so you may not notice it. for example i think amazon does a pretty good job because while i don't use it very often, it generally suggests things i look at and think about buying (but don't). so at least it makes sense on a website where i am currently shopping.
i asked my coworkers if youtube ads worked for them, and multiple people have said it reminded them to buy, and it seems to be the brand they prefer

95% of people use it a couple of times a month as an alternative to simply googling shit, they're essentially irrelevant. 2.9% of users are jeet vibecoders or image gen coomers who pay a small monthly fee. 0.1% are companies that pay thousands or millions to integrate AI into their services. The rest are savy free users who know how to exploit "free trial" offers.

Many of them break rather easily, I'm quite annoyed and surprised at the fragility of what I thought was a premium keyboard option.I try to put some tape to fix stuff, is this a normal thing for mechanical keyboards in general? Pictured is the H key as well that cracked like many others

I was given a dell chromebook for free, decided to see if it could make a decent netbook style PC for basic tasks.Especially since the keyboard is rather nice for a chicklet style.
Boy was I fucking wrong.
tl;dr
>it is insane to demand an always on internet connection on a portable device
>it is insane to limit an otherwise fully functioning computer to 16 gigs of eMMC non upgradable in any way storage
>they made an entire computer specifically to be chucked in a landfill
First off chromeOS is fucking unusable dogshit.
On what fucking planet do you have a wifi connection 24/7?
You can't even setup the OS without internet.
Why? This is a device with a battery.
They really couldn't consider someone using this thing in a remote place with no internet?
Thankfully on this model you can coreboot it pretty easily by just unplugging the battery which disables write protection on the mobo
The biggest issue is storage
4gigs of ram is painful but usable on linux so its fine that its soldered i guess
But why the FUCK is there a SINGLE STORAGE OPTION and its only 16 fucking gigs of dogshit eMMC storage???

Dumb people are going to be dumb.

I have an acquaintance who I've gotten into two AI arguments with. She's a firm anti AI person, despite never having used it. She tried to tell me how AI works, even though I've literally made machine learning programs before, and also tried to tell me that it's "SLAVE LABOR!" But in the same breath she also says "AI is just a word guesser."

I kept trying to calmly explain to her how AI actually works, but she called me a "techno machine God worshipper". I left after that.

Dumb people are going to be dumb.

It's really too bad everyone has an equal voice on the internet. It gives these dumbasses way too much weight.
