What distro should I install on this old thinkpad I have from 10 years ago? I’m just looking to use it as a Linux lab of sorts, fucking around with systems stuff like QEMU, initrds, custom kernel modules, networking, PXE, etc. Not sure if any one distro is better than another for this purpose but basically looking for something lightweight and will work well with my old hardware, just werks as I’m not a ricer but rather using this to learn about system internals, and also not locked down in annoying ways that will make it more difficult to play with the stuff I want

If you have at least a 64 bit CPU then Debian LXQt. How much RAM do you have?
>>
>>108519934
4 gigs, definitely 64 bit. Dual core Intel CPU (not sure which, was a $400 consumer grade thinkpad at the time). Might actually be closer to 15 years old by now than 10. And thanks for the suggestion

Do you mean the most lean one and potentially the most mass produced? Sometimes "more technologically advanced" is in the opposite direction from "more optimal".

More advanced in that the 300+ bar chamber pressure exceeds every other engine by alot. This makes for some insane thrust to weight ratio. Raptor puts out more thrust than an RS-25 (shuttle/artemis engine) with half the weight and size.
The full flow staged combustion cycle is what helps with achieving this and Raptor is the only FFSC engine to actually fly.

There is little you'd consider suboptimal. Despite all the changes from Raptor v1 to v3 they never sacrificed engine performance and it only ever improved.

That fucking breaks the file formatting and prevents the image from being reuploaded to other websites, including and especially 4chan
And hey, how about this? I SHOULDN'T NEED TO DO FUCKING ANYTHING TO SAVE A FUCKING JPEG FROM THE INTERNET. NO PLUGINS, NO EXTRA STEPS, NO TAKING A SCREENSHOT, FUCKING NOTHING BESIDES RIGHT CLICKING AND SAVING AS AN IMAGE FORMAT THAT FUCKING WORKS.

No wonder Linux programs sucks compared to what's available on Windows.

What is the problem with it that you're going to solve?

A browser with a deliberately small, simplified HTML/CSS subset and optional JavaScript implemented as a plugin rather than built-in. The goal: keep HTML and CSS compact and predictable so any novice could implement a compatible browser from scratch. Instead of adhering to the full official specs, use a purposefully limited subset to avoid the complexity and bloat of modern web standards an easy way to simplify and streamline the web.
completely ignore other "modern" features such as webgl/webassembly etc.

any such project? I'm aware of gemini protocol but this one is too minimal.

HTML and css are dope as fuck though. If you wanna make a browser with a limited set of functionality, nobody's stopping you. You could also just use old browsers.
And if you want to get an absolutely gimped piece of shit browser with bad compatibility and requiring a shitton of polyfills to get shit working the way it does on decent browsers, just use safari
What's your problem?

The only good thing apple does is put their hardware in cast aluminum cases.
I still own woefully out of date apple laptops that are going strong because of the fact the cases are built to last much to apple's chagrin.
It's entirely the reason why I only buy laptops encased in metal. Plastic shit falls apart.

>god, four fucking syscalls for this, lol. at this point it's honestly just comical.
When I do stuff like rsyncing my codebase, sometime the build system would sperg out when the timestamp of the of the sources was updated, triggering full rebuilds at every invocation.
Especially for big codebases, I see why you would want to update them all efficiently.
also, I usually set noatime for all my filesystems. I don't know why atime is useful, but I'm sure there's a usecase, so having options to set it only when needed seems useful to me

It's a 3D file format. Conceptually it's not as complicated as you make it out to be mostly converting headers between binary 3D formats and maybe some matrix math. In theory it's straightforward, but actually sitting down and implementing it is where the difficulty lies. I'm really frustrated every day I stare at my monitor wishing I could just get the damn software written.

do people like authenticator apps?

i broke my phone and got locked out of my bank, steam, post office and other things.
everysingle one needed an authenticator or some app i didn't have access to anymore.

i had to take out my sim and plug it into another phone to end up using the sms verification stuff, if i didn't have another phone, i'd be screwed.

do people enjoy this? like are jobs made solely for this so they won't go away?
I'm honestly so lost why things need to be so complex now, where just not having a single device causes so many issues

Passkeys are tied to domains, so they won't work on fake sites and need zero manual codes.
