Happens all the time. GPL is hardly enforceable and fsf only goes after major companies. Not to mention a lot of people don't understand what GPL actually stipulates and thinks everyone using their GPL code HAS to open source (they don't). If someone did that to my code we'd be able to easily know by it calling GEGL and GMIC. From what I understand legally their code can be closed but if they modify my code and post it online it must be open.

The same could be said about other open source libraries being dependent. That is how people may know.

Just install a DE package and a WM and use the WM? There's no hard requirement that you need a DE for the programs. Usually you'll just have to start dbus or daemons but it's not too hard. I have some really basic things setup to start in my WM config, and some others less necessary things run off a script I use.

I only upgraded my FX6300 to the aforementioned 3900x about a year and a half ago. That FX still plays Red Dead 2 and even ran Hell Let Loose at around 45fps. Gave it to my little brother and he's still running it.
The 3900x is such an unnecessary overkill for absolutely everything, I can't even imagine the use case for a 5900x or 7900x.
