When do you decide to buy a new laptop if you know the next year there will be a better one and the year afterwards an even better one? Why don't you wait next year for the better models? When do you put the cutout? When do you decide that "okay, the model this year is the one I'm buying and I will totally not regret my decision when newer models are released." Because it never ends.
>>107690007If I need a new laptop I buy one then.If I'm sitting around thinking "but next year there will be a better one" then that means my current laptop is fine for at least another year and I don't nees to buy a new one now.
>>107690007Buy a laptop when there's a meaningful improvement. The people who bought M1 Macbooks, for example, didn't regret it.Update only when you need to. If your laptop does everything you need, keep using it.
>AIEEE IF I DONT HAVE NEWEST NEW THING MR SHECKELSTIEN WILL STEAL MY FORESKIN!!!!not my problem, amerigolem
Buy a new laptop when:>your old one is broken>your old one is not fast enough for your current computer needsand if you are a consoomer>the new model represents a big spec (e.g. big jump in CPU performance) upgrade compared to last year's model

Why are minutes and texts still listed in phone service when everything is data? Why are cellphone networks still a thing and not handled through wireless internet? Why are smartphones still using a different operating system than desktop computers?
probably because the government has the game in a chokehold and likes the current funnel thru which everything passes is them, so they can pass it off to our #1 ally, for strategic reasons, probably
>>107689573No doubt Google and Apple like the existing arrangement too; 30% cut of all revenue through their "Marketplaces" which are monopolies for Android and iOS. Pretty sure this is what Microsoft was trying to replicate on the desktop with Windows 11. I don't think it's possible to setup a new Android or iOS smartphone without a making a Google/Apple account in the process.
>>107689398I own a cell tower, wanna try ?
>>107689834nah thats okay, thanks though
>>107689364>Why are minutes and texts still listed in phone service when everything is data?Because not everything is "data". Not all phones support VoLTE or Vo5g for example.>Why are cellphone networks still a thing and not handled through wireless internet?I don't know how you think this works but your wireless internet (if it ain't Wi-Fi) is using the cellphone network. And should you refer to the non-ip part, then again, not all devices support doing everything over ip. Legacy shit is also the reason a lot of networks still have 2g or something like that running.>Why are smartphones still using a different operating system than desktop computers?Because the operating systems are well adapted for their specific use case and trying to expand one onto another domain entirely is virtually impossible as the "synergy effects" are not sufficient to offset the plethora of downsides this entails.Think of the catastrophe that was the windows phone. The best we can do nowadays is have android pretend it's a desktop os with a mouse and keyboard, but it's just not enough.

And this is why Android will never be as fast or have the great graphical performance of iOS.
>>107690570Uhm..no. The graphical performance for example is almost entirely related to the GPU, which doesn't execute java programs.

Windows is atrocious. I had Windows 7 installed on a 120GB ssd for the longest time and towards the end Windows 7 was using 75GB just for itself and I'd have to use Disk Cleanup every so often to clear temporary files or else I'd quickly fall under 10GB of available space. I didn't dare install any games or save my downloads on that SSD, I only saved stuff to secondary harddrives. my main SSD was just for the OS and programs (like Firefox)
>>107690681It's shit because this is the default behaviour, but you can micromanage it and prevent it from happening for the most part. What's worse is that modern Ubuntu is going the same route with snaps. I barely have anything installed and there's over 10GB of snaps, 4 different gnome versions because some app has a specific version as a dependency etc.
I was against eSIM when I heard it was being forced on people with new phones, but after using it I'm convinced physical SIM should die>free and instant network activation>if your phone is stolen, you can't get physically SIM swapped>makes more phones dual SIM>GrapheneOS will wipe it if you enter your duress passwordThe only benefit I can see for regular SIM is it's easier to swap between phones, which is something hardly anyone does regularly
>>107689625not sure if relevant but in my 3rd world country you can get a sim on a place like this where not only José has a more degraded memory than your 30 year old CDs but you'd be lucky to even find the dude past a few weeks/months, suffice to say they literally cannot accept anything but cash and because half the stuff they sell isn't regulated they don't require/offer any kind of receipt/document
>>107689625>phreeli.com and silent.link willHow does payment work, crypto?>Physical refuse is harder to get rid of than dataWhen you tap a delete button you have no guarantee it actually deleted the only copy of a thing, and that it's been scrubbed and not just marked as no longer valid. When you snip a SIM in two, the NSA might stand some chance at recovering what was on it, but even that's questionable.>Someone can reset passwords on a ton of accounts using just a phone number.True, though they can do the same if they clone the data that makes up your eSIM, or swipe the phone itself.

>>107689955Crypto is offered as an option for both of them.I'd say it depends on the implementation if eSIM data is zeroed out on deletion. I'd assume that would be the simpler option to implement, but you can never underestimate incompetence. Retrieval of that hypothetical data isn't something most anyone could pull off though.Cloning an eSIM is a something only a sophisticated actor could pull off, but it seems it has been done with some eSIM implementations.https://cyberpress.org/new-esim-hack/
