Anybody here try/use Bedrock linux?
I've been on Manjaro for a while, but I'm getting the itch to switch distros.
Debian's not at the top of my list, but I'd consider it.
I refuse to ever use Ubuntu again. (There was some unpleasantness back around '08 and I refuse to ever give them another second of my time.) Nothing really against Mint. I've used it before, though, and it keeps me in the Debian branch, which I'm not very used to.
CachyOS is, I guess, catching on for some reason. It's another Arch derivative. Can't be worse than Manjaro. And I'm somewhat used to the Arch ecosystem.
But this Bedrock thing seems like a bit of a winner. Doesn't pin you down into any one branch. Plus, as I understand it, I can just install it over top of my existing install, instead of starting over from square one.
Anyhoo, just wanted to know if anyone here has experience with it and would/wouldn't recommend giving it a try.
>inb4 gentoo
No.
>inb4 just use Arch
Then I might as well stay where I'm at, which I don't want to do.
>>
If you want multiple incompatible distros what's wrong with podman on a stable distro? Bedrock has been in development since 2012 and is on 0.7, so it's obviously hobbyshit.

>Then I might as well stay where I'm at, which I don't want to do.
why? if it works why change?
>>
>>107743549
why not just make a bunch of vms for every distro?
containershit is just that. shit.
>>
>>107743564
just feel like switching is all. it's not like this is a production system with critical infrastructure hanging on it. it's my 4chan and movie machine.

I'm 95% sold on crippling my Apple hardware with Linux autism. I'd lose ~35% of battery life. But I hate Mac OS with a passion.

Please, convince me not to.

never, macOS fucking sucks these days, I'd gladly pay the battery life penalty if my M4 was compatible with it
>>
>>107736561
>And why do you still buy Apple hardware?
NTA but the hardware is good
I have a Vivobook S 16 with a nice OLED screen, a Ryzen 9 HX 370 and 32GB RAM. The M4 Air has much much better battery life while keeping cool, it's not comparable
that's literally the only reason
>>

I'd rather use macos than anything made by the pedophile hector martin and his gang of troons.
yeah I know he left the project a while ago but it's all the same, ain't touching asahi troonix with a 10 feet pole.
>>
>>107736412
progress seems to be constantly slowing on asahi. seriously. how many years do we have to wait for dp over usbc? it was "basically working" like two years ago and yet they never finish the code. it was good for writing and compiling code, but i always had issues with yt playback dropping frames and frametime inconsistency. Now I just keep UTM running for linux.

Just use windows XP if you want a consistent UI

No one cares? For decades this smooth presentation was the standard for live and taped television.
>>
And remember this is FIELDS per second we're talking about here. Not frames. And no, two fields do not make a frame. That is s destructive process. Interlaced video is just different. Each field represents a unique moment in time, and when played back via interlaced video creates a smoother look than 30 frames per second video.
>>
>>107743561
i don't really get your point, most interlaced video is deinterlaced to 60fps not 30fps. It's a lot easier to just bilinearly interpolate between the fields to make a complete frame than to interleave the fields and then have to decimate the combing.
>>
>>107743592
>most interlaced video is deinterlaced to 60fps
That is not true at all. The vast majority of OTA broadcasts are only available in 30 frames per second when they are released to streaming platforms.

there’s no way people are already nostalgic for touch screen phones.

I mentioned on a /pol/ thread about SSD prices that I had a Samsung 840 pro SSD that had basically been on 24/7 since I bought it 14 years ago. An anon in that thread wanted crystaldiskinfo but I was too lazy to reinstall windows on it. Then a Russian anon told me about smartmontools. Hopefully both of them will find this thread since that one is now archived.
Now, to the main two points of this thread.
-Can anyone beat my high score?
-How long do you think this MLC SSD can last? Because I'm going to run it until failure.
>>
>>>/pol/
>>
>How long do you think this MLC SSD can last?
As long as you want, it depends on how much you write on it. I think it could last longer if you don't write that much to it and treat it read-only unless you have to really change things.

Xinuos (deadname SCO) has two Unixes they stlll sell, Unixware and OpenServer. They apparently have the same kernel but different syscalls implemented via different personalities, the former apparently more SVR3 and the latter more SVR4 flavored (technically they branded it as SVR5 but it's the only fruit from that tree so not a very useful descriptor). Also some different administrative tools apparently.
>>
>>107743508
sorry mixed those up, Unixware is SVR4 and OpenServer is SVR3.

dang is right. people like this guy end up killing internet communities because they create nothing and share nothing but snark for those who are actually doing things. if you have too many of them you end up with twitter where everyone is dunking on everyone and nobody's doing any real work out of fear of getting dunked on. perfect environment for poseurs.
>>
>>107738986
There’s a balance.
Obviously you don’t want dunk addicts going hog wild shitting up the public square.
But you also need critique, most people won’t notice their fly is down unless someone else tells them.

I don't use generic chatbot AI much, but a family member does, so I set up an openwebui instance for them. It uses openai just because it was the easiest to set up an API key with.
I also have a year trial of perplexity pro. I like its aggressive use of reference material because in my experience grounding with tools/RAG is the only way you can hope to get accurate answers from LLMs. I don't use it much so I'm not sure yet whether I'll pay for it.
Most of my LLM use is Opus 4.5 via Cursor which work pays for.
