Apple just works but is overpriced
Windows works (mostly), but is a frustrating nightmare that breaks more and more with each new version.
Linux is the worst of both if you're stupid, but the best of both if you're smart.

What am I in for with this integration project? Should I just sit back, attend meetings, and have all my devs go work on something else? Since this'll never get done there's no sense in dedicating any resources to it. I guess I could vibe code from our side to make it look like we're also working.

READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

What cheap 2.5g pci-e card for pfsense/opnsense?
>>
>>106530966
Skip 2.5G and just get a used X520/530 10G NIC or X550 if you want RJ45 instead of SFP modules. They are dirt cheap my entire network is running on used 10G NICs, even switches and routers have come down significantly in price.

I need help planning a server. Budget is around 1.5k euros, could go higher if reasonable.
Main purpose is recording livestreams from several sites via avtdl and storing them locally, requiring a lot of storage space.
Picking hardware for it isn't the problem as it is basically just another NAS, but I'm not sure how to combine both tasks in one system.

If I want art, I’ll just use AI. The truth is most people don’t actually feel anything from “modern art” anymore — the market is so oversaturated that genuine emotional attachment is rare.

Art only matters when it resonates with you personally. Out of everything I’ve ever seen, I’d only pay for two artists: one because his story hit me, and another because his style was the first time I understood what “art” meant.

Everything else just blends together into noise. Without that emotional spark, it’s just another pretty picture in an endless sea of pretty pictures. And that’s why most people don’t care, and definitely won’t pay.

I'm literally in the EU. I've never seen a single person or business use SUSE. Every business is using Debian, Ubuntu or Alpine for servers, and Ubuntu for office computers and workstations.
While people at home are using Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro or Bazzite. Fedora is significantly more relevant among home users than openSUSE.

Gave up halfway through and installed linuxmint which was fully installed and rebooted into a desktop in the same time the opensuse installer took to install 3 packages.

Tech hasn't shifted that dramatically since 2000, so it's not as much as a pronounced shift, compared to asking a 25 year old in 2000 about the tech in 1975. Things really took of in the 80s and 90s and warp speed.
>>
>>106531163
*at warp
For example, in those 25 years you went from Pong graphics to Quake 3. Of course tech has continuously improved since 2000, but it seems more incremental. The smart phone is the major event, but in some ways that's a regression or a side step, as the phone hardware and capabilities have always lagged behind the PC.
