oh they’ll take it. whether offered up freely or not.
If you’ve so much as stepped foot in a grocery store in the last 5 years they’ve created a profile on you. even if you brought no electronics and left without buying anything. they’ve tagged you with facial recognition and gait analysis. they know what they can advertise to you based on how you made your way through the store. they’ve gathered everything they possibly can and they’ll sell it to anyone who’ll pay.

It's a really easy feature to implement and have a lot of impact in terms of free advertising. You just show some statistics and say that 'you're a stray ajzz cat who eats slop a lot'. People share it in messengers and some stories in Instagram.

People love it when you tell them something about themselves, as long as it's positive or neutral at least. It's why they go to fortune tellers.

We weren't staring at video displays 24/7.

Television stations went off air at midnight.
Video-on-demand a relatively recent service; with the ease of clicking "next" to keep things playing, at little to no additional charge.
Personal computers not a common household fixture until mid/late 90s.
Smartphones not commonplace until late 2000s.
Menu boards all physical.
Auto dashboards all physical.
Relatively few computer based jobs, retail POS terminals not screen based.

Arch Linux decided to upgrade the default NVIDIA GPU driver to version 590. This change means that Arch Linux will no longer support NVIDIA GPUs from the Pascal generation and older—this means GeForce GTX 1000 GPUs and older.
7 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>107666271
can you even do gens on windows? I imagine windows users would be fine with integrated, not like they need anything more.
>>
>>107667850
Yeah no shit they did, Arch Linux always upgrades to the latest nvidia driver as does every other distro that isn't garbage. The latest nvidia driver is bad enough, being stuck on an old driver is completely fucked.
Nvidia cards from Pascal and older generations will be unusuable on Linux until nvk makes them usable, because the 585 driver is dogshit.

As is the 590 driver, but that's beside the point. It's still a tiny bit less dogshit.
>>
>>107667850
Arch linux didn't do anything wrong. If they kept the older drivers as default, then retards like (You) would just bitch that they don't support the new GPUs instead. You can 't have two default drivers.

The problem here is 100% on Nvidia and if you're using a older GPU you can still install the older drivers manually.
>>
>this thread
Does the average Windows user just not install graphics drivers and expect the OS to handle everything for them? First thing I do on a gaymen PC in Windows is prevent Windows from including drivers with updates and install drivers.
>>
>>107667873
> Nvidia cards from Pascal and older generations will be unusuable on Linux until nvk
Nvidia didnt release signed pmu firmware needed for maxwell and pascal, without reclocking they are stuck on lowest frequency so nvk wont be much useful

Hi, I really like the Linux mentality and all Linux offer. I’m switching to Linux for my personal use and I’m very happy for that. But now, i want to switch my association to Linux. I’m a IT technician and I know the war of the data, the GAFAM… We use Windows because the people say: - "it’s more simple" - we use that every days and for personal use - 0 advantage to switch to Linux - what’s the data privacy? It’s not important for us - stop with your mentally of geek - Linux doesn’t work - Linux is the geeks users / IT users - bla-bla-bla and bla-bla-bla…

Please help me find arguments to convince them. I know that Linux is a really good solution and works very well, but I can't sell the idea itself. Please excuse my grammar, English is not my native language.

Unless your job depends on switching your company to Linux, don't bother. It's going to be a headache and too many things could go wrong. The exception would be for things like server hosting, then Linux is probably objectively better than Windows if you know how to manage it.
If it just works, don't be that guy who tries to change stuff and make it difficult for other people.

>Help me to explain why Linux is better than Windows
Just tell them to explain why Windows is better than Linux. I have zero reasons to switch from Linux to Windows. Of course I have reasons like it is free as in money/libre, privacy, I trust the FOSS more than proprietary, FOSS is usually compactible and uses standard libre formats that you can export and import between random FOSS software. Linux is basically cheaper, easier, comfy, nicer experience in the long run. I have same experience on my old Android TV box (Ubuntu ARM version), on my old Android phone (postmarketOS), x86 desktop PC, laptops, UMPC and even if I log in to my OpenWRT router, it is mainly the same basic idea to use it.

Even as a non-tech-savvy, you have nicer time on Linux that doesn't need group policy, regedit, debloat scripts, cmd, powershell and all the other completely random proprietary shit that you have to learn just to learn something else when your master changes how things work or there is the next proprietary debloat application from the new e-celeb youtuber. Windows also does stupid stuff like forces the update that switches your "no updates" option back on in the group policy, then replaces your old working printer driver with the new broken one and does this in a loop even when you are searching random Windows forums to force enable the old one back. Windows had deleted all user files in the past, every application from calculator to notepad sends everything in real time to Microsoft. Good luck when you think you copied some number and you paste your password or private text into your calculator. Now Microsoft has it.

It is also nice to learn everything from LibreOffice to GIMP, only use Anki, Easy Effects, K3b etc. and be in this world where you can be anywhere and you just install these same applications every time for free without learning anything new. Linux is like a home where you can just be.

Computers can fit on a USB stick now. Streaming devices are full fledged computers now. So are routers. So called smart streaming devices are more capable than routers. Anything that's marketed as smart has a computer in it. And you can run Linux if you have some technical ability. Some of them it's easy and others hard

Kek what's tragic is despite their attempts, Windows is is still maximalist, the only people making stuff as usable and truly minimal as possible are foss motherfuckers.
>>
>>107670561
mostly this.
ui designers want to keep their job, so they find excuses to change things that do not need changing, without taking risk, resulting in the shit ui's we have now.

combined with the vectorization of ui's, profit maxxin, 3rd world import and a myriad of other things, here we are.
>>
>>107670561
the UI designers have no visibility or say on the shitty jeetcode webshit implementation and companies almost never look for UI design people who know how to program or how the systems work. the terrible performance, lag, glitches are ux too, but the UI designers are completely isolated from those concerns by the hiring process.

i dont think you are able to define what you think "minimalism" is. win9x/xp had way less crap going on the screen and had rather rudimentary uis.

this new run dialog is basically another stab at having a maocs quicksilver-like launcher from like 2004
https://qsapp.com/about.php
or mac spotlight https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotlight_(Apple)

a stock windows 95 or gaanoo loonix rice with just a tiling wm and dmenu is something vaguely "minimal" by today's standards..........
>>

>ui designers want to keep their job, so they find excuses to change things that do not need changing, without taking risk, resulting in the shit ui's we have now.

UI designers do not make these decisions, they are almost on the same level as code monkeys in the pecking order.

The brief they receive from the above (Product Manager, Product Owner) already says 'here draw a new thing that does this and that but also that, and have it touch friendly kind of like iOS, it will replace the legacy windows95...'

Theme: [Accepting suggestions]

>Song submission rules/guidelines
Upload the file somewhere, preferably in a lossless format, and post the link here. If you want to update your track, make a new post.
Include the song title in the post, and make it clear that your song is a submission for the album.
Optionally you may include cover art for your track, but please confirm that the image in your post is the cover art or it won't be included. You may not use your real artist name.
Songs that contain anything against YouTube's policies won't be uploaded on YT, but will still be added to the album.
By default, tracks will be normalised to -14 LUFS (integrated loudness) in the release. You may specify a lower loudness for your track.
Use of AI is banned. This includes AI generated stems, samples, and effects. "AI" includes all neural network-based models and not hard-coded automation/procedural generation. You are allowed to ask an LLM about music-related questions, but asking it to give you musical ideas (eg. generating a chord progression) is already a no-no.

Yes.

Any version of Windows since 1995 has been more polished, production-ready and user-friendly than any Linux distro ever made. That's obvious to anybody who has installed both of them on the same machine.

Are Linux users just lying about their distros being a better experience than a Windows installation?

better is subjective you fucking retard
in my user experience of linux it has been far superior in performance, stability, and overall simplicity. it's also significantly better for programming which is enough reason on its own to never look back at windows (i also have all my games, + don't use shit like adobe)
doesnt help linux's reputation that there's several different desktop environments and options to choose from which provide differing experiences to new users (some fit certain people better than others) but having the choice to have multiple is ultimately a positive imo. best advice is to choose one of the major distros (i'd say fedora or mint) and stay away from diy like arch if you're not already familiar with linux
>>
>>107621970
it's 2025, everyone has not only access to google but now our own personal fucking JARVIS, yet technical literacy is at an all time low. why can't people use computers?
>>
>>107621970
I use Linux because it doesn't send all my key presses to Microsoft along with screenshots every few seconds and because it's better for a good amount of programming tools.
The experience is worse in some ways, but my OS not being malware is important enough to overlook it.
