It’s fast enough, and I’d rather have the pixels than the hertz on a computer where I’m not playing games. If I were to buy a new computer, it’d make whooshing noises every so often to cool the CPU and I’d rather have the silence.

I'm on i3-gaps, using polybar. However, I want to have my status bar vertical now instead of horizontal. What are my options?

Ideally something that keeps it tiny. I would just display active workspaces, date and time, volume, and temps. I think I can do away with window title unless I hover the mouse over the workspace or something.
>>
>>
>>100058739
Come to think of it, why are vertical bars not as popular? I only see this one >>100032612 in the thread.

They take up the part of the screen that you have the most of (width) instead of the one you have the least of and is most precious (height). It helps if your goal is keeping the most text on screen at any given time

I tried it, but sometimes I just want to have my hand on the mouse, the other hand free to throw into my pants or whatever, and just navigate my computer and do basic tasks with just the mouse. I can't stand having both of my hands on my keyboard all the time. How do you guys do it?
>>
>>100059752
oddly enough this has become a slight annoyance for me in the past 2 weeks despite using dwm for 4 years now. Sometimes I want to open some programs with my mouse while i'm slouching away from keyboard or eating. There probably is a way to do it but eh... I'll do it later.

I understand that Windows isn't the best OS, however, for me, it's the most reliable. I will jump to mintOS tho because Win 11 looks genuinely retarded. It seems like a re-skin of Mac OS. It will take me some years to get the hang of Linux, but I'll manage. It will be sad leaving Windows, I've used it since my XP days as a kid. Which desktops I like the most? Simple. Ones that are clean and well-managed.
>>
>>100066496
>It will take me some years to get the hang of Linux, but I'll manage
years if you're tech illiterate, maybe. otherwise you'll be able to get the hang of it in a week or two and get more comfortable as you use it more
Linux isn't some kind of esoteric OS you need to sell your soul to be able to use it, especially not on a beginner-friendly distro like Mint kek
>>
>>100066496

It takes a few weeks to get over the uncomfortable feeling of the new environment, and a couple of months until you feel like you have a pretty good picture of a lot of the options available and their strengths and weaknesses; Definitely not years. But, switch for a reason not just because it's a thing to do, if windows works and you don't mind microsoft doing microsoft things there really isn't a reason to switch. Linux makes a lot of stuff dead simple to setup and use in regards to programming and networking, but it's also stuff that will work just fine through a VM on windows.

>debian trend
what trend? the one that started in '96?
Personally, I've been using Debian on and off since 2014. At least keeping one single, usually my main desktop and sometimes my laptop on it, while I occasionally tried something else. It's just that I realized that my computer needs pretty much boil down to Firefox, a PDF reader and LibreOffice and so far, Debian has been the most stable distro I have used with a modern-enough version of LibreOffice in the backports.

While Arch and other rolling distros can be made to work reliably over the years, they require more maintenance and are prone to badly curated or buggy or, such as the recent XZ situation, backdoored packages, while more stable releases use only whats tried-and-true. In turn you get a less updated system but that has software that has been tested for longer and is less likely to be affected by some change in-between major system updates.

If you think about how most people use their machines, you'd see the average person isn't updating all their applications and their system all the time, so if you take this mentality and apply to stable distros with distinct releases, you'd see why it is the most common way for software distribution.

I, for example, haven't had a single issue with Arch on my laptop, which has it for the last 5 years, but that's mainly because I rarely update the system and barely never install any additional software from pacman, relying mostly on Flatpak and AppImages for newer stuff.

So yeah, if you think there is a trend around Debian right now it's probably either just a coincidence or bias from your observations or people are getting tired of chasing the updoots and just decided to settle on something that just works (until a new distro release comes out and breaks everything for a while).

I'm using picom for slight transparency, inactive and active at 0.7 and 0.8., as for the theme, just using Dark Aqua and font is jetsbrainmono. https://github.com/Beastwick18/nyaa for the TUI

The only way to avoid corporate and government espionage is to completely deblob your kernel into a libre kernel, use only open source firmware, compile everything from code, and purchase a laptop with a non-backdoored CPU, running a basic bitch Linux distro ain't gonna cut it, particularly a bloated one.

No, you can literally do all of that, it's not that hard. Numerous guides online and distros that cater to that.

Most people are just too lazy or vidya addicted (that is, firmware-dependent), that seems to be the main problem.
