What does /mkg/ thinks of chiclet keyboards?
Received my Model F Labs F77 reproduction just under a week ago. Was actually crazy pingy, much better now with floss mod.
Anyone ever try out the Fulcrum keyboard? wanted to build one last year.Speaking of cheap, though, are there any 104-key outemu blue boards out there for $20?

>>100113338The lower the budget the harder it is to recommend a really good keyboard, I understandHonestly, I kinda want literally everyone to buy F1-8X v2 for their personal keyboard maybe 1 extra PCB and just forget about it but people just want cheap shit

Does anyone here own a NIZ keyboard, if so how is it? I'm interested in Topre / Topre like boards but don't know if I want to pay the price for objectively feature lacking plastic keyboards that I may not like what so ever.
>>100122706I like beige but it doesn't fit any of my boards. Alas.
>>100123158I have. They're objectively pretty alright, but I found that the tactility they offered wasn't exactly as nice as Topre's. It's hard to explain, but Topre has a crisp "hard" feeling to the tactility, whereas Niz feels like typical rubberdomes. Niz does have some benfits, though, like MX compatible sliders for sticking custom caps. They use Costar stabs, though, which are a PITA to lube. This is a very good comparison between the two: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=25640
My Model M was manufactured in 1985 and it's still going strong, all keys and lights still working. It's probably got more pubes under the keys than I have on my body at this point tho

Does anyone make linear switches that actuate near the bottom out?
Hello, I am looking for a new keyboard to build. The features I am looking for are the following:>QMK/VIA support>Wireless/bluetooth support>Aluminum base >Lots of color options for the base>Little to no gaps between the function keysJust throw some ideas. My budget can be flexible, so I will research the suggested options.

>>100125229>people keep shitting on the street>"what the fuck, who shit on the street?">"WHY ARE YOU SO OBSESSED WITH SHIT???"different troon, same old retardation

>>100125229I don't know man, I went to the meetups and there are no troons, it's a peak sausage fest
>>100125229I have contempt for them because they're abominations. They're disgusting, physically and mentally, they're narcissistic wrecks whose very existence as a showcase of mental illness does much to undermine faith in the modern medical system. They are almost always politically oriented towards marxism which is the worst evil ever devised by man, though they are most often unwittingly used as tools by political agendas they understand very little. They have no personality or knowledge of anything beyond their personal identity crisis and worship a cult of self. Every single issue that exists in the world, to the trannie, is "how does this personally offend/disenfranchise/upset ME?" To them, sexual deviancy IS what they are as people, they have nothing else, just as how a low-accomplishment incel racist has nothing but his skin color- trannyism and inceldom are two sides of the same coin, two forks of the same path. Both are identity cults.Ultimately they are victims, but they are victims who have been coddled to the point of insufferability, and are permanently broken as a result. Past a certain point, one cannot blame early childhood experience for one's failures, and each person must take responsibility for the adult they've become. You use the word "obsessed" as if to paint a negative moral judgement by implication on those who would discuss and reveal the problems of transgenderism, but it's a weak effort. The more the terrible tragedy of trannyism, body mutilation, and mental butchery at the hands of a politically-oriented corrupt medical establishment have a light shone on them, the better.https://i.4cdn.org/gif/1713053347284408.webm

>>100125410I'm married with two kids. I'm sorry you can't communicate seriously without resorting to meaningless shitpost tactics, which says a lot. You're incapable of stringing together any combination of words or memes that will "insult" me.
>>100125387Bro, you can't blame literally everything on troons, especially when seeing things you don't like
>>100125424Sure, buddy. Chuds can't have kids.
>>100125432>blame literally everythingI don't know to what you're referring. I blame trannies for their behavior, their political leanings, and the damage they do to societies and children. This does not imply they're responsible for "everything" wrong in the world. Although such a victimhood complex is another of the typical mental health issues of the common troon. The left emphatically sees itself as victims in every issue, and even assign moral virtue to being victimized. This is why they keep setting themselves on fire. The issue doesn't matter to them, what matters is the pain they feel, and the burning (no pun intended) need they have to make everyone else experience their suffering vicariously.
>>100125453Does it happen in the same world where we live or only in your twatter-world, chudjak?

>>100125505Ignoring reality doesn't make it go away, but I can see you've made your choice. I'm sorry that every day is pain for you, I'd say solutions for help exist but it is difficult to find them in the murk of this current healthcare crisis. Most of the people you're relying on to "help" you through gender dysphoria have been hurting you, but they tell you things that stroke your ego and let you ignore having to take responsibility for your life. It feels good so you go with it, but much like a morbidly obese food addict you're just doing yourself more harm than good by avoiding, and even glorifying, the problem.

So is it just Unicomp & Model F Labs as available choices for buckling spring unless I want vintage tech?
>>100134038Yes, though personally I think the new Model F keyboards suck
>>100134123A couple in this thread look a little too much like inflated pool toys. I love the feel and sound of buckling spring, but maybe I want something a little more modern than the same model that has been made for the last 40+ years.
Are keychron brown switches different from cherry in any way?
How kino is this vintage keyboard?
I didn't consider that when I change layouts, the little nubs on F and J move with those keys. Do I file them off or can I order custom nuphy keycaps for individual letters? I also need to add nubs to T and N so I guess I should put some super glue or something down.
>>100134267Honestly I just recommend looking around for an old one and screw/bolt modding it. It's easy. If you get an F, you don't need to mod it at all since they don't have plastic rivets.
>>100134361In my experience everyone does brown differently; most are Cherry-like but you can't assume they will be. Wuque Studio brown has almost nothing in common with Cherry MX Brown. Kailh brown feels pretty different as well. Keychron's switches are surprisingly cheap, which doesn't mean they're bad—just another difference. Gateron makes them, I think. Gateron does make good cheap switches, but they aren't all good. The upper housing is PC (yuck), whereas cherry browns are nylon top and bottom. Keychron says their brown is pre-lubed, although sometimes (e.g. Outemu Silent Lime) that claim can be kinda bogus. I am wary of pre-lubed tactiles because sometimes they do some lazy method for lubing up the whole stem and that's not appropriate for a tactile switch. I'd prefer them not lubed at all so I can do it carefully myself after break-in. Cherry's are of course not lubed, which is maybe a good thing, because their scratchiness requires a long break-in-period, and lubed switches break in far slower.Keychron's brown is pretty similar to Cherry's in terms of spring weight (50g vs Cherry's 55g spring) with slightly better spring consistency (+/- 10g vs Cherry's +/- 15g) but still badI have heard it said that Gateron's nylon is not quite the same as Cherry's, so Gateron nylon housing switches tend to have a slightly brighter sound than Cherry's, which are a bit deeper. With all that said, I can't find any force travel diagrams to compare the tactile bump, that more than anything else will make it feel similar or not-similar. So I don't know. Someone on one forum said they're almost the same as Gateron browns, which in my experience are comparable to Cherry browns. They should have a bit less stem wobble than Cherry.
>>100121007Nah that's not the issue, I'm just not spending that much money on an inherently gimped product is all.>"functional"Yeah I love ignoring the fact it's missing functionality too.>normielmfao dumbass
>>100136695>that much moneyWe are talking about the price of a pair of boots. You are talking about it like it's a big sum. Money is obviously an issue. That's fine as long as you're honest. You are not being honest.
I can't decide between Keychron V1 Max and K2 Pro, halpthey are about the same price for me
>>100136695As a full size enjoyer, I've never really felt a loss of functionality from a TKL myself.
>>100136820Nice bro. You owned him. Us richchads are the only ones who should enjoy keyboards.Since we are both 1%er with no money issues, post your latest keyboard get. I spent 1K on this custom board/case I imported from Norway. Its only the price of new tires, so its not >that much money...
>>100137163I can't afford something like that, because I don't make that kind of money. I recently bought a Neo80 for my brother and am keeping a look-out for a good ~$300-400 full size gb, which is what I can afford. I have a 10-year-old daskeyboard. You fundamentally misunderstand my posts if you think I am positioning myself as a rich guy laughing at the poors. I sympathize with them. I dislike the dishonesty/cope. If it hurts to buy a nice keyboard, that anon should say so. I don't respect people who say "that's pointless trash for mentally ill people" when they mean "it would be a waste for me to spend my limited funds on this." A nice keyboard isn't as important as nice boots, or quality food, or rent. But it's still nice.
>>100136820The price of a pair of boots that can't even do their job properly. That's what paying for anything less than full size is.Going>hurrr function layers hurrris like saying "well I can tape a piece of steel over the boots I spend $400 on". You just look like a retard is all.>>100136965If all you're doing is typing responses online all day then yeah, I guess.>>100137389>still going on with his RP autismlmfaoIt's an inherently gimped product and nothing changes that simple fact. This really just sounds more like projection to me and you're upset I made fun of you for paying that much for something with lacking functionality. The pissing contest you worked yourself into really seals the deal with it and you're seething I'm not joining in.
>>100137453>If all you're doing is typing responses online all day then yeah, I guess.I program. The only time I miss the numpad is when I'm doing shit in Excel, and it's not really that much slower to do my calculations on the num row. Are you a hunt and pecker by any chance? People get thoroughly butt-hurt about anything less than a full size tend to be pretty slow typists in my experience. Which is understandable, I guess.
>>100135705>If you get an F, you don't need to mod it at all since they don't have plastic rivets. You will, however, have to contend with a much more difficult/unintuitive reassembly process should you ever need to disassemble itAnd if the foam hasn't been replaced, it will need to be at some point since it's probably already disintegrated and foam is basically required for reliable operation (without foam, my F AT just randomly stopped working occasionally, with most keypresses no longer registering for several hours at a time)
>>100137481I've been touch typing ever since early middle school, wouldn't say I'm all that fast, but I'm competent enough. I used to use Excel regularly and now I'm just far better with a numpad. Entering numbers for anything but passwords or a couple words in a sentence is just better and more comfortable with the numpad. I also regularly do calculations with it throughout the day.Don't see the point of paying 400 bucks for gimped trash that looks, sounds and feels the same as nearly every other trend chasing board currently in production. Full size boards just look better, they're complete. I don't need to get a separate numpad that is going to look different than the the primary board or use inherently inefficient function layer autism, all the functionality is built in. It's a perfect mix of form and function."Trimming the fat" because you're a super low DPI autist gaymer or minimalist fag obsessed with saving desk space is just queer as hell to me. Needing a big ol' empty desk with shrunken down tools or you start freaking out definitely does reek of mental illness, and that's where this obsession with non-full size boards comes from.
>>100137668It's fair enough if you don't want to pay money for that keyboard, it's all about what *you* want out of a keyboard, after all. I just disagree with the "loss of functionality" statement. You can program these keyboards to however you like. I think you can make an argument for a loss of efficiency -- which I personally don't have an issue with -- but that's another thing entirely. For me, I can go all the way down to a 60% and still be efficient. It's like anything else, you just learn to adapt. Statements like these: >Needing a big ol' empty desk with shrunken down tools or you start freaking out definitely does reek of mental illness, and that's where this obsession with non-full size boards comes from.Just come across as weirdly antagonistic. I don't know why you're being so hostile. Hobby's all about personal preference, if people like small keyboards and work best on that, then so be it.
>>100137730And that's the issue, I don't need to go out of my way to make a full size keyboard usable for me. And it's not really an argument, it's just a simple fact. It literally does "Just Work™" from the get go with no additional setup required, even if that setup is easy.I know TKLfags and everything below it always whinge about "not needing" a numpad, that's fine I guess, but acting like they're good boards to just recommend to anyone and everyone is a dumb idea. Also I don't really see the issue with me bringing up that stuff, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. The way I see it boards without numpads are kinda similar to multitools compared to a tool set . Like yeah, you CAN get (mostly) the same functionality out of it with more work put in fiddling with it, but I wouldn't recommend a multitool to someone over a tool set, ever, especially if it costs as much as said tool set.
Why did all of you mechanical keyboard faggots have to ruin retro computers for everyone? I just want a matching keyboard for my apple iigs but because it has some faggot alps key switches that I don't even care about I now have to pay retarded prices for it.
>>100138446Blame the boomers like chyros hyping up old ass alps switches.
it's been about 8 months since I went from 108-key qwerty to a 58-key split with canary layout.I had heard people getting used to it in like 2 months but only now I'm starting to get good enough to use it on a reasonable level of productivity (I couldnt cold turkey it, I have actual work to get done)It still has some rough edges still but overall it has been very fun.
Just tried out some MT3 caps, pretty fun to type with, and quite similar to KSA. The spacebar is ever so slightly less sharp on the bottom edge than KSA so it's not as immediately jarring to type on.
>>100138689I often feel like an odd man out because I actually quite enjoy typing on KSA. In your opinion how does MT3 compare in size and feel?
>>100138689MT3 is pretty great, only bad thing about it is being owned by drop.
>>100138929The size/height is about the same, it's definitely a taller profile. I'm using a set made of ABS and they're thick and so are the PBT ones, but unlike the ABS sets they are pretty much always dye-sub instead of double shot. The feel is quite similar as well since the keys also have that slight cup shape that makes it rather comfortable to type on when you are accurate. And don't get me wrong, I like KSA too, I just think that spacebar is a bit rough personally. I am DYEL though so I bet if I worked out my hands/forearms even a little bit on the regular it would be less straining over time. I imagine if someone is the type that slams the shit out of their keys when they type that KSA probably wouldn't bother you at all.>>100139078True, and IIRC isn't Drop owned by Corsair now? Bastards have been clawing their way into everything for the last several years it seems.
>>100137841>I don't need to go out of my way to make a full size keyboard usable for meFor me it wasn't much of an adjustment. I would like to get a full southpaw build, though. Best of both worlds in that case.

>>100153058I don't really feel qualified to give you advice or guidance because I literally just got my first mechanical keyboard today, but I think a lot of it is bullshit. who makes the best quality OEM profile caps? I actually like OEM I just want ones that are thick and consistent and so on
What's a good and easy way to get the grease out of the keys? I've been using this keyboard for over 6 years now and I miss that fresh feel that it used to have when I pressed any key. Now every time I type something, each key immediately gets greasy to the point where you can see the fingerprint. I hate this.
>>100154402buy new caps, your stock abs caps have become slick with wear.go on aliexpress, spend between $20 and $40 on some caps you like the look of. go for pbt (dye sub or double shot) if you want them not to get 'greasy' again in 5 years.

>>100156571Shine is good actually
>>100156612I have the G915 and I like using it. Custom mechanical keyboards aren't things you buy for cost efficiency, it's a tinkering hobby.
>>100154603it's a shitpost but it's also mostly true, my mx browns are about 8 years old now and I only recently learned what spring swapping and lubing is about so I could give that a goon the other hand the switches are getting near to 'end of life', I've had to replace a couple that weren't actuating when pressed (e key and shift key). so investing effort in them might be a bad idea.
>>100156571How to polish keycaps?
Anyone got experience with the predator aethon 300?I got it on a sale a year ago but now my space bar feels soggy i.e. doesn't jump back immediately like other keys. I tried taking it apart without proper tools but the switches don't seem to come off. Do I just need the proper tools or is it just not possible to take this keyboard apart?
>>100159086> the switches don't seem to come offdid you desolder them from the pcb?also you'll want to use a switch puller if there is a plate

>>100154390bumping for this. Really want to know if there's some OEM equivalent to e.g. Keebox Shenpo caps (have I mentioned I love my new Shenpo caps? should I say it again? they're so fucking good bros, got the BoB and Terminal sets and am really impressed with both)I like OEM as a profile but all the ones I've seen are a bit mid
>>100161033I had this exact same experience. Started to learn touch typing and as soon as my speed was getting up into normal range I started feeling strains I had never felt before. I don't think hands are meant to move like that
>>100161033sometimes it can be one particular motion or key combo that is doing this. When I played a lot of Call of Duty Zombies recently I was frequently reaching with my left hand to hit M for the map while also pressing W/etc, began to get worrying pains in my left wrist. I worked out that this particular keypress was likely causing it and switched to using a more comfortable key for the map, pain went away.I'd recommend thinking carefully while you type about which motions feel a bit unnatural and adjust your style to eliminate them
>>100161033you have a wrist rest?
>>100161389Yeah.>>100161105There's definitely some specific problem presses, especially when the word is mostly based around the left hand. I may try something like colemak in the future if I have the time to see if that's a better experience.

>>100162768I own a handful of Duckys. Hotswap is nice to have. You get your standard fare braided cable, switch puller, and keycap puller. The foam between the plate and PCB is a nice upgrade, and foam in the bottom of the case. Stabs are plate-mounted, and with a touch of lube. I personally have not run into the key chatter complaints I've seen online. RGB programming and macro recording is the same. I think all the macros are the same between the One 2 TKLs and the One 3 TKLs. Sounds nicer, but is slightly more annoying to get into with the plastic love-handles they have (but at least you don't feel like you're going to break the clips as much as the One 2s). You're only getting stock Cherry switches in the One 3s, and it's still an aluminum plate. It definitely feels like a glow-up from the One 2s, though I'm not keen on some of the color options. The majority of the One 3s come with OEM profile keycaps, except for the Gossamer Pink, Mist Grey and Cosmic which have Cherry profile keycaps. The recent One 2 Pros are not hotswap, but add a lot of the acoustic improvements the One 3s have. If you don't need hotswap I think those are floating around $100. Those are mostly Cherry switches with a couple Kailh BOX switches thrown in as options. It's hard to say if either of the above versus the standard One 2 is worth it for you, but I hope this helps. Compared to some of my other boards, they aren't seeing as much use as they used to. Still fun to use from time to time when I just want to use a plastic board. I stuck a One 3 Mini in a Tofu Redux case recently and it's been nice to revisit and dress up.

>>100174539this. it seems like most keyboard "hobbyists" just care about gay lights and keycaps and how the keyboard sounds.
I love all switches. Scratchy or smooth, ultra-tactile or linear, nylon or polycarbonate, light or heavy, long springs or short, clicky or silent. Never met a switch I didn't like, unless it was broken
>>100178979I don't "care about the sounds", I just use the sounds to judge what the keyboard is. The sounds tell me about the materials, the fit and finish, etc. It is not for the sake of the sounds that I obsess over the sound, it is because they are a sure indicator of the things that really matter.
>>100178979Only 3 things that matter are>how it looks>how it feels>how it soundsJust like any hobby in the worldIf you don't care you can just buy cheap $7 keyboard and be done with it lol
>>100179254firstly, function over form, alwayssecondly, form still matters, but excessive customization is fucking gay - in any hobby. the least gay thing to do with a keyboard with regards to the sound is to make it as quiet as possible, because that's practical. modding it to make it sound cool is gay. i guess i shouldn't be surprised by you people. after all, half the pics that get posted here have anime desk mats and other childish/gay accessories.

>>100180121>What does excessive customization even mean?In this specific case:-any visual customization beyond different colored keycaps. if the keycaps have anything on them besides their normal characters, e.g. cute little symbols or design themes, they're fucking gay.-functional customization by way of ultra-specific switches. there are too many fucking switches and the more exclusive and obscure they are, the more retarded their names get. there should be like 20 different switches at most.-and lastly, customizing the sound beyond making it quieter. like the feel of your switches, but they're too loud and annoying to you or those around you? do your little case modding tricks to quiet it down. other than that, there's no practical reason to make them sound louder or any different.

>>100180306>>100179610Some good and some bad in here. I think you have some good instincts but your application of them is confused, and ends up being wrong.Fine-tuning the sound of a keyboard is fundamentally different from installing "artisan keycaps" and other such evils. And keycaps—well, we'll get to that, but for now, the sound—Let's first consider why artisan caps, one kind of extreme, are bad. They are aesthetically repulsive and jarring in a keyboard, and their appeal is that they are collectibles which the user buys to express him/herself and make their keyboard 'unique'/'fun'. It's narcissism at odds with aesthetics. Just like many other sorts of ugly plastic junk, e.g. funko pops. Ok, this is bad, we can agree. But sound is all aesthetics. And in fact it's not easy to escape the necessity of tinkering with this, since the board and switch are not usually designed for each other; making choices about foam, plate material, mounting style etc is usually about creating harmony between switch (chosen for feel) and board. Some tinkering to get this just right aesthetically is a joy—maybe you think it is faggotry to polish your silverware, wax your wooden furniture, etc. I think that view is childish. Cap enthusiasm I think lands somewhere between. I don't think choosing beautiful caps is wrong; and I think placing an arbitrary restraint that they must be conventional is against reason also, since it assumes keyboard design is a finished science. But then we have thousands of people who fancy themselves designers because they buy limited edition $200 gmk caps that fit the cool cyberpunk idea in their minds (what if it was green and had cool symbols on it...) and the result is more like deviantart OC than a nice keyboard. This is obviously getting into faggot territory—but I think the objection has to be an aesthetic one. That the simple functional mass-produced board is aesthetically superior to this.
new:>>100181717
>>100181608>maybe you think it is faggotry to polish your silverware, wax your wooden furniture, etc. I think that view is childish. That's quite a leap. Especially because those specific examples are care and maintenance of those items. Altering a keyboardist sound (other than to make it quieter) serves no practical purpose. As you said, it's all aesthetics.
