What's the /g/ way of handling: got job offer from company A but waiting for another offer from company B (which is preferable to A)?
>>
>>100155419

how do i do a branch and bound solution to this 0/1 knapsack problem
>>
>>100155751
You wait for the offer from company B, if company A pressures you for answer you tell them you're waiting for the offer from another company.
>>
>>100155803
Also make sure B knows they've got limited time or you'll decline by default
>>
>>100155817
Yeah, tell them you can only wait X days because you have another offer on the table and need to answer before the deadline
>>
>>100155419
Not asking stupid questions is the worst when you're a newbie. You can't imagine the headache some juniors are when they're clearly incapable of solving something but do their utmost to hide it and prolong the inevitable of talking to someone. I try my best to be as supportive of asking stupid questions but some people just won't take the hint

>>
>>100155908
Makes no sense to take in juniors to train for months and then throw away, unless they've not improved an inch at the end of it, which only really happens with the mute people incapable of cooperation.

For record the people who constantly pestered us with a dozen questions an hour are now our best experts
>>
>>100155930
I know it doesn't make sense but whenever I hear "just ask questions" my autist senses tingle as fuck and it seems like a trap. I'm always expected to know shit and if I don't it's better to not let know anyone and figure this shit out by myself.
>>
>>100155985
If you were hired to do a specialist job you claimed to know but don't then there's obviously a lot to go wrong, but if you're literally a junior then any half-competent senior should be helping you. Any company that shuns it's workers based on trying to improve is worth avoiding, they're a sinking ship.

It's just so much faster when people tell me what they don't know immediately, it sucks having people constantly stuck in the mud because something I said relied on some previous knowledge they had no idea about but kept nodding their head.

help me bros its all so tiresome. After finishing my masters degree next to working my current company did not make a good offer for me to continue staying there. now i applied to a few other local companies. The first was nice but lowballed me, the second and third are looking for seniors (which clearly i am not if i just finished my masters alongside 5 years of work). so basically my only option atm is either stay where i am or get 1k pay raise (per year) and go to the only other offer i got. how do i go from here? I feel like all my efforst the past 5 years were for nothing if i cant even get a decent pay raise out of it. Where do i go from here? Should i have been more assertive about my qualities? Are my qualitites even sufficient? I dont know anymore...

Hey! I need your advice /twg/ I'm gonna start looking for a job! My main knowledge is C, linux administration, a little c++ and notions in cybersecurity, i also got a google cloud architect cert, i'm thinking either going for something cybersec related or cloud computing and specialize in security there since security is the thing thats most fun to me and also cloud computing seems to be extremely well paid, i'm in university, got soft skills and i'm located in a big city in Europe

Any advice? Not sure if i should aim for more certs or what carrer path should i take, is public cloud cybersec a good field? Any advice / personal experience welcome, thanks

In some places it is. I remember that at a consultancy the client would write an "X" on a paper everytime the junior consultant would ask them about something. If you accumulated 5 they would report you to their managers and ask you to be replaced by someone "more competent".
Toxic AF I know, and that was while earning a little bit above minimum wage.

I wouldn't see in a bad light if a dev "failed to deliver" provided he notified the risks and issues and documented properly the reasons why this was happening. Other thing is failing consistently and not giving a shit about it, jeopardizing the department estimates for the project pipeline continuously.
Our jobs have a lot of uncertainty because the deliverables are usually quite abstract.

I'm still asked by Pajeet "engineer" to provide specific total counts of sites / servers, looks like they haven't figured out how to select rows in a spreadsheet and see the total.

I think I know why I didn't get through to the next round of interviews. I told the interviewer that I was empowered in my last job to make my own decisions and make changes without prior approvals or letting any of the higher up(s) know.

His thinking probably went along the lines of, "he'll make changes without knowing what's going on, brick us, or will go stepping on everyone's toes - anon's a no." Thing is, I'm the lead when I make those kind of decisions along with the fact that I did like 80% of the work of the whole damn thing. Fuck me, I guess saying I'm incredibly independent and autonomous is a huge negative.

It is probably a boomer thing. I know plenty who have the company loyalty mentality, they think that earning $50k/year at the same job for the last 30 years and getting passed up on promotions and raises because management know they won't leave is morally superior to people who job hop and increase their salary. They wear their tenure at bumfuck company no one has ever heard of like a badge of pride.

I get 2 days of no questions asked paid time off a year (in addition to normal pto). They don't rollover, they don't accrue, and they can't be cashed out. I want to take a Friday off, but I'd feel like such a worm using one of these days just "because I feel like it." I'm not sick, I'm not traveling, I'm not doing anything. How to approach this conundrum?

Technically it's 16 hours, not 2 days, so I could divide them up however I want to. Maybe I could come to work for an hour and just do my fifteen minutes of actual work and then take the remaining 7 hours off. That way my coworkers wouldn't really get any extra work due to my absence.

Zoomers are terminally glued to their phones so if you want to make money i'd suggest any language used for app development.
Video game development languages are very interesting but the current blackcock/vanguard ESG score tranny enforcement will have you making games where you're Jew Biden and you chase down children or some tranny shit like that.

My manager's manager just treated me like a bitch and he said I do no work.

And since none of that worked the next step is to pip me. I don't care. My whole life has been destroyed to my very eyes. Fire me if you will.

If you want to get off her ride, start replying with nothing but questions.
>Where are you stuck?
>Is it not in the notes I gave you?
>Do you know how to <basic job task>
>What have you tried so far?
This has two advantages:
- you have it in writing that she's either not qualified or lazy
- she encounters resistance and may start pestering someone else, or start taking her job seriously, thus leaving you alone
She can try to blame you when she fails ("he refused to help, so I couldn't finish the project"), so make sure you have a few screenshots with these chats saved from time to time.

Can you name a soulful field of work?
>Not to mention the demographics
Please elaborate.

should I apply to jobs that say they require a bachelors degree even though I didnt finish college?
I know for a fact Im more qualified than 90% of fresh CS graduates for a intern/junior level job

also I plan to mostly apply to companies by email, not through official application portals
>>
>>100165408
I'm in college for math and CS, before you get on me for being a hypocrite for paying for college, it's for general credentialism and because my parents are paying for it. I really don't give a shit about trying to get jobs though, my friends in internships tell me about the bloat and garbage that goes on. I guess I'm just blackpilled
>>
>>100165432
>Can you name a soulful field of work?
Anything can be, it's just the teleology of our economic system that makes everything soulless.
>elaborate
No white people to be found here, all asians who want nothing but money
>>
>>100165436
>should I apply to jobs that say they require a bachelors degree even though I didnt finish college?
Yes. If you don't, you chance of getting them is 0%. If you do, I think your chance of getting interviews and then getting the job is appreciably non 0%. It will be tougher than if you have a bachelor's degree though. Personally, I'm getting my bachelors so I don't get auto filtered (also my college is cheap enough to be covered completely by financial aid)

I genuinely feel like my head is going to explode. At this point just fire me with severance - fuck this I can't do it anymore.

Maybe phrase it differently? Tell her that it isn't lasting long enough and you're sort of crashing. Be upfront, tell her you're worried that it could get you fired if you can't focus long enough.

That's like trying to squeeze water from a rock. In m experience, if someone is not sensitive to your needs when you are being implicit and they also have an interest in just ignoring you then being explicit general doesn't achieve agreeable results.

mismanagement + managerial insensitivity = interminable bullshit

It's best to just quit at that point, imho

Try to see if you can do an internal transfer.
idk which fagman you're at, I'm ex. amazon and internal transfers happened all the time.
>>
>>100165859
How do you guys go about internal transfers?
Isn't it weird to tell your boss you wanna switch areas?
>>
>>100165634
they may have started you on a half dose, to increase to full after 1-3 months.

Ask your provider for extended release formula and go from there? Btw, having done both, dextroamphetamine is literally meth. So grats on the legal droogs

>>
>>100165900
I never did it myself but there was a job board, basically the internal version of https://www.amazon.jobs which additionally listed the managers and some other internal info. You just had to reach out to the manager, there was an internal interview, then the managers approve the transfer. There were also various slack channels for poaching internal engineers. Basically it happened all the time at Amazon.

>>
>>100165934
It makes sense, thanks anon.
I wonder how people do transfers outside fagman, though. Did any of you ever do it "manually", aka without applying to an internal job board?
>>
>>100165753
>>100165773
What I really want to do is get into semiconductor manufacturing. I got a tour of this big facility a while back but they didn't move forward because of a "hiring freeze" or whatever. Hoping I can transfer my skills into that and just read about lithography so I can drop buzzwords in the interview.
>>
>>100165950
In my experience, it just prolongs attention. So you can go like 4 hours edging or whatever but it never really made me feel hornier or more satisfied or what have you.

I think trying to chase the dragon of the first time is a misguided goal. The spirits make the first one seem the best and then don't tell you that they will never do that again so they can manipulate you like Mara of Buddhism.

You mean like apply for a job at your current company, in the way an external candidate would apply?
If so never heard of anyone doing that. I mean, what's the point? When they see your resume they would notice you already work for them right?

Also just remember there was once a manager at amazon who did an internal transfer to my org and also brought 3 of her engineers with her. So these kinds of things are way more common than you might realize.
>>
>>100166026
>You mean like apply for a job at your current company, in the way an external candidate would apply?
No, I mean like telling your boss you wanna switch.
Or idk, ambushing another boss at the cafeteria and asking him to take you in.

Oh I see, you'd have to somehow hear about another team that's hiring. Harder if there isn't a job board obviously, but if you have friends in other teams they might tell you.
>>
>>100166107
I mean, I'm asking because I've heard a lot of people say they did internal transfers and I can't imagine they all went through internal job boards. But maybe they did and I was just very "unlucky" of never working at a company with an internal board.

What cert should I study for while I'm unemployed?
I already have ComTIA Security+.
Should I get a CCNA or are those worthless now? I heard getting vendor specific cloud certs is a bad idea because experience is king and I obviously have no experience working with GCP/AWS/Azure.

As a new grad is it best to look for a web job or a data job before I eventually get a masters? I know the basics on both but I'm gonna make projects to feel more confident and have something in my resume. May also try freelancing if I don't get anything in the next 4 months.
