Holy fuck I hate onedrive. I just lost 10 years of irreplaceable photos and documents because this piece of shit forced itself into my computer, hijacked my Documents, Pictures, Desktop etc folders, copied that shit to their servers and removed my local copies, and then when I deleted their shit, all my shit is gone and the windows file browser is throwing errors whenever I try to open those folders.

it's all fucking gone. I never asked for this shit on my computer, I didn't want it to replace my normal fucking folders with some spyware bullshit, I never wanted fucking anything to do with it but fucking MICROSOFT integrated it into the OS, like cortana and internet explorer, and FUCK YOU if you don't like it. turn it off, it turns back on. forcefully remove it, and it breaks system critical shit.

I have repeatedly disabled onedrive since getting my computer, and when I found a onedrive folder in my user directory while cleaning up files, I deleted it without a second thought. now, it turns out that all my pictures and documents were actually inside that folder, and not in my actual pictures or documents folder.

no, none of it is in the recycle bin on my computer or on onedrive

as for file recovery, it got back about 10% of what I lost. I'm feeling very emotional. fuck this spyware software. microsoft forced this shit onto my computer, stole my files and moved them around without permission, and then fucked me in the ass. holy fuck I'm so mad
>>
>>100170320
It just works. You're retarded.
>>
>>100170330
yeah that's what all the microsoft shills say online.

>it works fine if you use it properly!
maybe it does, I don't care. I didn't want it, I didn't ask for it. it's malware. sure maybe it's useful for certain applications, but not for me, otherwise I might have chosen to install it on my computer.

it's really fucked up how it integrates itself into the file browser, and suddenly your /pictures folder is actually /OneDrive/pictures but nothing tells you this until it's too late.

the shills also like to say
>it's not that complicated
>read the fucking manual

yeah that makes sense...in the case of something you chose to install and integrate into your system. it's totally bullshit in regards to something that forced itself into your fucking computer. it's a fucking virus and I hate it
>>
>this piece of shit forced itself into my computer, hijacked my Documents, Pictures, Desktop etc folders, copied that shit to their servers and removed my local copies, and then when I deleted their shit, all my shit is gone and the windows file browser is throwing errors whenever I try to open those folders
very extreme case of user error
>>
>>100170390
User error would be if I installed a program and then used it incorrectly. However, this shit installed itself, hijacked my shit, and does whatever the fuck it wants with my files and my computer

fuck you faggot. I'm not some computer novice, I've been using windows since before you were born. this shit is unprecedented and almost predatory in the way that it takes the traditional user file structure and then just shoves onedrive into there, so microsoft can upload all your shit to their servers
>>
>>100170320
What are you trying to accomplish by spamming badly LLM-generated threads about fake IT issues?
>>
>>100170320

You should be able to recover your files from the onedrive web interface. I assume you have a microsoft account.

You could at least take the time to read the shit you generated. The LLM made it sound like it was a blunder of yours that provoked the issue.
>>
>>100170405
I don't have one drive.
I don't have these problems.
IDK what your doing wrong.

Don't even have a Microsoft account linked to my puter.
It's really not that hard to do a local account even on windows 11.
How would they upload anything even if they wanted to, what account would they put it in?

IDK what to tell you but your kindof a cuck and I'm glad I don't know you IRL.
>>
>>100170459
I deleted the OneDrive folder, in the same directory as my Pictures and Documents folder, but actually, the REAL pictures and documents were inside the onedrive folder and not in the pictures or documents folder.

surely you can see that this is a ridiculous way to have things. they should have at least used different names
>>
>>100170460
it was, technically, my blunder. I deleted the folder. what I didn't do is put all my shit in that folder, Microsoft decided that one.

if you had pictures (you don't as you have no friends) you know how much they take up space. Nobody wants to make another backup ssd (chud). Now, cloud is option to make backups (for normal people). But OneDrive is sold as free trials and such. How to make people pay for this service? Destroy their local files. Your files are in the cloud now, goy.

Obligatory: you got what you asked for

You chose to be a peasant toiling on the small patch of computing land the Count of Cupertino or the Duke of Redmond granted to you, but it is their land and their will is law. You chose it, because it was easy. And now the inevitable day where the Duke idly strolls by, fucks your wife, and takes your stuff arrived. And you will do nothing except bow your head and accept it, serf.

This did actually happen with Google Photos to a family friend. One of her friends was insisting on using Google Photos albums, and she finally caved and downloaded it. She’s a little on the older side, and Google is sneaky with the “Keep your local files or delete everything and move it to Google?” questions, so that’s exactly what happened. Apparently had to spend a day carefully downloading it back to the way it was and getting it off Google’s cloud.

100% the first thing I disable when installing Windows.
It's counterintuitive how to use it, windows explorer opening on it instead of your local area is bad, and the windows explorer screaming at you if you do not have a folder name onedrive, when it doesn't complain about any other imaginary folder not existing, is atrocious.

If Microsoft actually wanted user friendly cloud storage, it should be opt in, purchasable, and not smother all your files, nor delete local copies when you delete "cloud" copies.

It's a nightmare for my older and younger relatives who don't understand how computers work.

Calling support isn't going to help me. I disabled OneDrive a while back, and kept using my local storage as normal. Then I found a onedrive folder while I was cleaning up my storage to make some space, and just deleted it without thinking because I don't use it. But it turns out, since Onedrive subverts traditional folder directory, all my shit was NOT in the normal folders (which still exist) it was actually in the onedrive folder. My explorer is throwing errors now because when you try to open "pictures" or "documents" it doesn't actually go to those folders, it goes to "onedrive/pictures" etc. It's absolutely fucking bullshit.

WHY does Microsoft push onedrive so hard? I can see its use for certain applications, but for the average user with a single computer, it's actively harmful. the only reason for it is so they can copy all your shit to their servers, but I'm pretty sure they can do that already. So why? just to encourage people to purchase more microsoft products?
>>
>>100175709
As I've already mentioned a few times, the drastic change is how it hijacks the traditional file directories and inserts itself as a middleman. The old folders still exist but by default they are not used, because everything goes into the onedrive folder instead. I didn't know that until now, because I disabled onedrive a while back because it kept throwing errors about insufficient storage and trying to stop me from saving shit locally, telling me I needed to buy more storage. This is predatory design.
>>
>>100175728
>This is predatory design
you are absolutely right.
>>
>>100175794
I have 2tb locally. I don't need or want onedrive. Aside from its bullshit, Windows also changes the file explorer to default to onedrive directories, instead of local. Which, again, I did not know until now because it is a radical departure from the way windows has worked since I first got fucking dial-up
>>
>>100175597
You know what's even dumber than microsoft? You are.
>>
>>100175855
fuck off pretending there's nothing wrong with this predatory bullshit that hijacks your local storage without telling you. if I had chosen to use it, didn't take the time to learn about it, and then fucked up, you'd have a point. But I didn't want it, didn't ask for it, and even when I disabled it (because you're not allowed to actually remove it), it was still doing shit on my computer.
>>
Reminds me of how getting rid of Cortana or Internet Explorer destroys Windows. I guess we can add OneDrive to that list of bullshit forced integration.
>>
Come to the BSD's.
>>
OneDrive exists as an early version of making your OS into a subscription based service. They want you paying a regular fee in order to store files.

imagine how many computer illiterates out there get tricked when Windows pops up saying you're out of storage, but for only $20 a month you can have basically infinite storage, and all your files will be safe and secure forever. This, when the user still has plenty of local storage. This is how OneDrive works by default.

All your original files will still be on your pc, Onedrive makes new directories in c://users/ but relinks them for your user account when you look in Documents to the onedrive ones

If it really has overwritten your files you should still be able to get them back with recuva

I'm using Windows because I have to, for external reasons. I used to use Mint. I will be returning to Linux as soon as I can, trust me.

>>100176780
thanks, but it's not like that. I disabled onedrive a while back, it was causing problems. Then yesterday, while cleaning up my files, I found a onedrive folder and deleted it. Turns out that many of my files were being saved there instead of the old default directories (which still exist). Yes, it was my mistake not knowing how onedrive works, but I don't care how it works and I never fucking wanted it on my computer, never (willingly or knowingly) used it, and was misled by the native file browser, where the sidebar for pictures, documents, etc doesn't actually go to those folders, but to a subdirectory within the onedrive folder.

You could say it's user error, and to an extent it is, that's true. However this shit is designed in such a way that it (intentionally IMO) obfuscates what's actually going on, and where your files are being saved.
>>
>>100176780
oh and I did use recuva and got some shit back (see >>100175495 ) but unfortunately I was making space for a big download which I started immediately after deleting the onedrive folder, and didn't notice until the download completed, so the vast majority of the old files were already lost.

What I'M doing? I saved my pictures in my pictures folder, and my documents in my documents folder. Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, instead made copies of those folders within onedrive, made the explorer redirect to the onedrive directory instead of the actual folders (which still exist), and did all this without asking or informing. There's absolutely no reason for this level of obfuscation. It's not even incompetence on their part, but an actively malicious attempt to have greater control over your computer and to get more money from you. The average user does not need or want this "service" but it's still integrated deeply into the OS itself, even if you disable it.

So in your mind what would be better? An OS that you would make your own directories, name them yourself and place them where you want them? Would it be a great os if it had cmd line baked in with Robocopy so you can /MIR your boot drive to your secondary drive then /MIR that to your external back up drive?
Oh shit, guess what? You can do all that on Windblows. You don't have to go anywhere else to have a basic OS.

Or, it could just keep doing what it's done for the past 20 fucking years, and have this onedrive shit as an opt-in service, for those few who want it or have use for it. Instead, it actively disguises its presence on the computer and makes itself a middleman in your main directories.

>>100173482
The other thing to consider is that the average user will have no idea what keeping the files local even means - they just see a place to save it and they save it there. Google, Apple, and Microsoft KNOW this but they also want to mine your data and make you rent it back from them forever, so they're happy to do things like this.

The OS-as-Botnet model has improved security, sure, but when the OS itself is making modifications to the system that are contrary to the user's interests, does it really matter?
>>
>>100179343
>the dialog window saying you're about to delete a folder permanently
yes, the window that said I'm deleting the onedrive folder. I read it. What I didn't know is that the OS has put all my shit in there instead of the pre-existing folders. Why would I doublecheck the contents of a folder I hadn't (knowingly) used for 2 years? >10 years of irreplaceable photos and documents
Why must people always act so melodramatic when they lose data through their own idiocy? If it was actually irreplaceable, you would have a working backup. What you actually lost was a bunch of shit you only ever intended to keep squirreled away and maybe passingly look at once in a blue moon, like a parent keeping a shitty ribbon their kid won at an elementary school science fair.
>>
>>100181935
actually, I liked to get drunk and look through the old pictures when I'm feeling nostalgic or missing old friends. It was irreplaceable, and I was a fool not to make backups. Not to mention, all my professional related documents from work and school, but honestly I'm far less concerned about that. Losing my years of 4chan images and OC is a bigger concern than the documents, but the pictures hurt the most. It wasn't just old shit I didn't care about.

>>100181927
Really? The two file recovery programs I used said most of it was unrecoverable, because I downloaded a massive file after deleting the stuff (that's why I deleted it)

There should be a OneDrive\Pictures and a Pictures in your user folder. You probably won't be able to see them with explorer. If you didn't delete anything from your user folder it should still be there. Just boot up a linux live stick. Doesn't cost you anything.

>and then when I deleted their shit, all my shit is gone
but why? why did you delete your cloud copy? you could just move your local copy to other random folder on C:// or some shit and it won't start syncing. also that's like the first thing you do when you get a windows pc, disable all that cloud shit, it was there back in windows 8, they called it skydrive, and onedrive/skydrive would take all of your wifi keys and uefi/tpm keys and sync it to the cloud so the NSA can just unlock your home network or home PC when you're not around.
now that you learned the hard way, I hope you get the lesson.
>I have repeatedly disabled onedrive since getting my computer
turn off the stupid updates. it is designed so the NSA will be in your home every time you receive a magic update which flips your settings.
>>
First thing i noticed upon exploring Winhoes 11 was that Onedrive is shoehorned into user files.
I quickly turned to the registry editor to scrub it out completely and redirect everything to local. There was a far easier way to do this, I found out later, but it has been smooth sailing since. Also disabled Start Menu ads, really simple.

if you didn't have backups elsewhere it's still your fault. If your HDD died randomly you still would've lost them and yes, you're a retard for just deleting the one drive folder without bothering to see what was in it.

Also did the green checks and blue clouds in the file explorer not give you the hint to see what it was all about?

It's 100% OPs fault.
The one drive folder is pretty much your home directory. Retard saw it for the first time and just deleted it without even checking what was in it.

If he just DISABLED the one drive program he would've been fine. When he realized he couldn't retrieve his files he could've just reenabled ti and everything would've been there.

Yes, but the One Drive bin is on the website. He might find everything there. I upload my personal pics and vids like OP (but I also upload them to a nextcloud instance just in case). You can find whatever gets deleted within 30 days and recover it. However, I've seen that at times when files get moved instead of deleted, do disappear without trace. Happened to a friend who moved a bunch of graphical assets out of the OneDrive folder, didn't lose the files, but OneDrive didn't report the files again, lost the storage space, and the bin didn't show them.

After reading the thread, OP is just retarded. OP deleted the OneDrive folder that was saved locally on his machine where he was saving his files to instead of choosing other directories.

The first thing I did with OneDrive was remove it from my PC. No way to accidentally save to that folder, even though it works just like any other folder. Ironically, if OP knew how to use OneDrive, all of these deleted files may be able to be recovered by downloading them from OneDrive if they were uploaded there as OneDrive should check the OneDrive folder if the program is launched. Seeing how OP is a techlet, and OneDrive was probably on startup, it likely was syncing to his OneDrive folder making backups of his files.

OP says that he is unable to delete OneDrive. SKILL ISSUE. It's very possible to remove it entirely from Windows. I've even done the harder task of completely disabling and removing Windows Update and the processes that reactivate/reinstall Windows Update. Needed to take over Admin from TrustedInstaller to do it but that shit is nuked from my PC. If you know how to give yourself Admin over everything, you can do whatever and MS can't stop you. But it has been more difficult to do with each iteration of Windows.

OP should invest in external hard drives and copy all of his files to them to make a backup. I haven't liked Best Buy for a while, but if I need an external hard drive, I can get a 5 TB for under $200 same day as I have a location only 15 minutes from me. Sadly they are the only store in my area that really sells anything tech, but if I don't want to order one online I can go there and pick one up and start to copy my files over in under 30 minutes instead of waiting for shipping.

ALWAYS backup your files onto another hard drive before deleting shit to make space.
>>
>>100171583
I'm not putting my files in a cloud location where I have no direct control over them. Your server could be shut down whenever and I cannot stop you. If my files are local, I have the control over them, not you. Fuck off.
>>
>>100170405

The whole OneDrive thing is just retarded and confusing to normfags. I gave some private tutoring in programming for a student last year and he used windows. When he went to the toilet, I just closed and disabled OneDrive. He came back and couldn't find his files that he put on the Desktop. We searched for a while and it turned out even the fucking Desktop was part of FagDrive. Incredible. But he didn't lose anything. He just started that shit again and it synced everything back.
Even to him it was news. He didn't even notice that every file was synced to Microshit servers and it wasn't even his real Desktop.
This is literal malware, you are right in that, regardless of the stupid mistake of deleting something without first checking the folder.
