/hug/ - Haiku User Group

In this thread we communicate about the Haiku Operating System' development, porting and usage!

Haiku is an operating system inspired by the now defunct commercial operating system BeOS, licensed under the MIT license and actively being developed. Haiku is neither an UNIX-like nor based on BeOS. It's a fork of the public made NewOS kernel. Its kernel is written in C++ and Haiku has a built in graphics stack and a hybrid design. It runs on hardware and is easy to use and install. With its design principle being sane defaults. It comes working out of the box with most software one would need. If someone isn't pleased with the selection, Haiku has a repository with software including, an early stage development wine port, almost all KDE software (okular, krita) and Libreoffice. Porting Linux/BSD software is very much possible by Haiku POSIX compliance and support for Qt and xlib.

>features
Sane defaults
Elegant work environment
Fine network and audio support

>limitations
Horrible powermanagement
No hardware acceleration
Lacks popular software like Firefox

I was looking for my old thread on find 4chan and saw some man say that Haiku doesnt boot on hardware, that's likely because you didn't setup the EFI, someone is working on a new installer but for now you should just follow these easy steps (if you find this thread) https://www.haiku-os.org/guides/uefi_booting/
>>
Last time I will bother making these threads daily

Hello, just passing to say you're based. Haiku is based. Its users are based by default. Those who make threads about it are even more.

Is haiku even usable as a daily driver?
Can it run on bare metal?
>>
>>101214082
I daily drive it on my laptop, so yes and yes
>>
>>101214318
What do you do with it?
>>
>>101214745
watch porn and send extortion emails
>>
>>101214745
I mostly use it for libreoffice, web browsing, watching movies on the couch, and coding if I'm away from the desktop for a while. Nothing which requires intensive hardware usage expect some videogames

>>101214752
For extortion emails I use reactos though

The only reason I would ever use Haiku is because of the beautiful icon theme. That shit needs to be ported to Linux.

dude.. if you want to hype haiku, next thread use a cool screenshot instead of a kitten so people will be interested
