Same applies for desktop operating systems, browsers, productivity software and so on. Thats why there are very few operating systems that actually matter. Alternatives exist but they are mostly irrelevant becasue they lack decent software and hardware support, so very few people actually use them. To change this, you would have to revert all modern technology to late 80s/early 90s at best.

I can deal with both but the Apple ecosystem is better, for example there is no Android equivalent to the Apple watch. I've had the offerings before switching back to Apple and they were garbage. Sure I'd love to pay less than $1.5k for a phone but Android just can't touch iOS even though around 2018 things were looking really good for Android.

Hence there only needs to be two.To expound a bit more: Platforms like operating systems are natural monopolies, since the need for compatibility makes less popular versions DOA. Hardware manufacturers therefore naturally tend to get commodified and have their margins destroyed by the OS. There is room in the hardware vertical for one "high end" option, which has enough pull to create its own OS and hence avoid commodification. The others then use a common OS, which one of them might create, or it might be created by a pure software company. However, the hardware manufacturers are always in danger, because the OS maker could decide to pull the rug out from under them at any time and start demanding very high fees. To insulate themselves, they'll support an alternative operating system, which the industry could in principle switch to if the OS maker got too uppity. Software makers are also in danger (though less so) of being killed by the OS, so they will often support this alternative as well. To not be a situation of "here's the new boss, same as the old boss", the alternative needs to be free and open source. On desktop, we have apple, with their high end hardware/OS combination, then windows along with dell, lenovo, HP, etc. The latter all make sure to support BIOS so that you can boot into linux or whatever. This way, if windows ever got too bad, the industry could smoothly transition away. However, as long as MS keeps their OEM fees reasonably low these players are happy to stick with windows. On mobile, we have apple iphone/ios, then we have google's android and samsung, motorola, etc. Google charges the latter to use play services, but base android is open source. So the phone makers could already switch away relatively easily, and hence don't need a true alternative.

There are only 2 mobile operating systems that are somewhat relevant for >90% of the population and same goes for the desktop, because only those are well supported by the majority of software and hardware. There are minor alternatives out there but they are irrelevant for the vast majority of people since they receive very little technical support and most software/hardware vendors prefer supporting something thats already well-tested.
