>he still uses antivirus software like Norton in 2024

I use Avast. Yes, the one that unapologetically steals and sells user data. Privacy is a meme. No, I'm not trolling. No, I'm not leaving.
>>
>>101219098
If I'm feeling dubious about a file I've downloaded, I'll run it through VirusTotal.
>>
>>101219098
we will actually go back to using such software as windows 10 seems to be the last windows meaning that in the future you will need some protection as you cannot update.
>>
Boomer dad bought another 3 year license for Avira, but I got him to stick with Windows Defender on his new laptop. And he's going to try out Linux on his own terms after retirement on an old Elitebook that can't reasonably run Windows 11 anyway.
>>
ITT: recommend op some antivirus software
>>
>>101219130
I used that until I got recently tired of false positives.

ok, wanna hear something stupid but working, its like hearing about LTSB in 2016 - you just do not know it yet but you are hearing about the begging of the end for a whole software suit: Kaspersky. Now that they are banned by the Glowies, Kaspersky has become the number 1 anti virus in my eyes. It was working well before, but now it no longer just works, it now also makes some glowie neck himself and that is sexy.
>>
>>101219098
I just let Windows Defender do its magic.

>he uses windows in 2024 and still needs kaspersky to keep glownigger viruses away but can't stop his own OS from spying on him and allowing rootkits to run no matter how many tinkertranny tools he finds on github

if none of the debloat scripts work and even blocking all MS domains in router helps... what makes you think your Linux does not have the same problems? From my experience open source foundations are just shell companies for real companies -> Mozilla is a shell of Google and in many ways is a good goy doing what is told. All of the "enterprice" distros are more or less as "open source" as Windows. At some point, you have to ask your what you trust and why you trust it. I trust noone.
>>
>>101221246
I don't have to keep running my debloat scripts after a random "update." That's the difference wincuck.
>>
>>101221690
>update
Yea about that.... I do that once every 5 years.

Uninstall gentoo

Classic thread, I member when this happened during windows_nt

I do not know if you know but debloat scripts usually delete the update functionality. Some of them do ... the better ones. Microsoft can talk all they want about how security and shit but for as long as i do not trust them I do not connect to their servers.. which includes updating.
>>
>>101221735
what if you just physically cannot connect to those addresses? Which even creates... or used to create problems as for example installing skype was not easy for me

>I give my data to the Russian state because my state is a corrupt shithole
It's a false dichotomy. Both can be untrustworthy and if you think they're gonna do less with your data then I wish you the best.
>>
>>101221757
yes. I will give my data for Russia. And I am saying this unironically.
>>
>>101219098
Supposedly the 2 best ones are Kaspersky and Bitdefender. Both made in eastern europe interestingly

No you're just an idiot, Windows Defender is sufficient for most people and if you need AV you would pick something good but not Kaspersky

if you have disabled updates for as long as me and refuse to use the "official" Microsoft defenses than Windows defender does nothing. This is even more of an issue as LTSC is looking to be the mid ground now and people are probably going o start going for the Government edition as the final Windows version and it has windows defender off. My windows defender is also off as it cannot really do anything if it has not been updated in 5 years.
Windows defender is a tool for people who cannot reinstall Windows and have no real understanding or balls to known how to use a pc like your mom. But even your mom has already moved to phones as main device, like most normies.
Just because you think windows defender defends you, when you do nothing to get yourself in danger this is your problem. If you do nothing dangerous and scan your pc from time to time with Malwarebytes and Kaspersky scanners you will be good. Also those 2 can be updated without needing the Windows updates to be on. Which in the future of government editions Microsoft Windows 11 / 12 is important because you will have to provide AV yourself.
>>
>>101222775
in the end of the day, tell me who will use the device. A device for work, or for parents will use LTSC BUT will have updates on and defender on. A device for me will not update in 5 years and defender will be off.
>>
>>101222775
Nta. This logic would hold up if you are the only person browsing on your own home network and if normal, otherwise trustable, sites didn't occasionally have malware injected into them from hackers (see "watering hole" attacks). Phones and desktops are prone to malware due to the attack surface and generally standardized formatting of the operating systems they use (this is one of the reason most Linux distros aren't as susceptible to viruses) which are popular targets for virus distribution. Windows defender's virus registry is sufficient for the common, non-enterprise level user even if they're doing some unhygienic downloading. What I'm getting at here is that Kaspersky offers no real advantage in contrast and it's really just a matter of personal preference. Personally, I believe having Kaspersky on my desktop would be bloatware. If you use windows you already have defender and don't care about your data, if you use Linux then you don't need an antivirus but ClamAV would be the better choice anyway. I don't know or care about apple products.

You are a literal fucking retard and have no idea wtf you are talking about, your pc is literally just a backdoor for every government agency regardless if you are running intel or AMD and no amount of running other versions of windows or other OS's will if the cpu is compromised the whole system is compromised and it's been that way since the early 2000's if you want to be truly anonymous don't use any tech at all

>had Norton back in the early 00s
>only ever clicked a virus once
>didn't catch it
>spent the next hour cleaning my PC manually
>it deleted tools I wanted countless times though
