Boomer dad bought another 3 year license for Avira, but I got him to stick with Windows Defender on his new laptop. And he's going to try out Linux on his own terms after retirement on an old Elitebook that can't reasonably run Windows 11 anyway.

This logic would hold up if you are the only person browsing on your own home network and if normal, otherwise trustable, sites didn't occasionally have malware injected into them from hackers (see "watering hole" attacks). Phones and desktops are prone to malware due to the attack surface and generally standardized formatting of the operating systems they use (this is one of the reason most Linux distros aren't as susceptible to viruses) which are popular targets for virus distribution. Windows defender's virus registry is sufficient for the common, non-enterprise level user even if they're doing some unhygienic downloading. What I'm getting at here is that Kaspersky offers no real advantage in contrast and it's really just a matter of personal preference. Personally, I believe having Kaspersky on my desktop would be bloatware. If you use windows you already have defender and don't care about your data, if you use Linux then you don't need an antivirus but ClamAV would be the better choice anyway. I don't know or care about apple products.
