I just use SMS (for IRL people) and email (for those I only know online). Having the ability to instantly receive messages from someone halfway around the world may seem neat at first, but a lot of people get too invested in online relationships and it's pretty fucking stupid.

Yes it is viable and just works. You can even start your own server and encrypt the connection so it is kind of decentralized as well.
