Of course it depends on what you do, but RAM usage became crazy lately. I was happy with 4GB a few years ago. Now I have 32GB (2x16) and disabled swap, I often run out of ram so I will have to buy another 2x16 soon. I just do graphics works. So no, it's not overkill.

Only reason to increase ram is if you're hitting page faults (e.g. software hanging and shit). For most people 32GB is enough but it really depends on what you're doing and your habits. I have 32GB on my computers but I tend to have an unhinged number of tabs open in my browsers so I often run into memory issues that cause software to hang or flat out crash.
