Look what i just ordered. I started making my own ortho pcb design but then i found this and it was a cheaper and easier option.Eventually i will finnish my design but first i need to know if ortho or staggered is better.
I don't know which one to buy! Very difficult decision. And I only have this week to decide because 2/3 options are likely to sell out quickW1-AT very cool but I only have one shot at getting it right because the alignment plate is single-use and it's plateless only (all the plates have been sold out for a long time), not much fun. Could be a very nice board though. It's tempting.Monospace is the least impressive but cheapest and in-stock. 1.7kg is pretty light (still heavier than my plastic full-size though). And 6 deg angle is a bit shallow for me, I like 8. Maybe it's not the last keyboard I'd ever buy. I think I'd get the red color.Pangaea looks great—a real full-size!—except for the moving numpad gimmick. I worry the board won't sound as solid and whole (probably it's fine, but...), and aesthetically I find it bothersome that it's not all one whole piece for the top case. They don't say the PCB price, I bet that'll be expensive. Plus that 4-6 month wait... If I'm gonna spend that much money and wait half a year, I want it to be more perfect than this.
>>101412595I didn't even read your question, I just clicked for the boobs.
>>101424557I don't know how anyone could type comfortably on a non-split ortho, plenty of people swear by it though. Hope you like yours
>>101424686Get the Monospace, the W1-AT layout takes some getting used to, and I don't think they go for a lot on aftermarket if you really want one after the fact. Plateless is also very jarring if you've never tried it before, I would strongly suggest trying a plateless board before buying one, personally I dislike how it feels a lot.Honestly, there's nothing wrong with a lightweight board, my F1-8X is a pain in the ass to move around on my desk since it's so heavy.

>>101424686monospace easy pick
>>101429565How much are we talking about here?
>>101429565No, the point of mechanical is being able to easily replace switches and easily customize the keys through the firmware (and storing on the board instead of on one windows PC when constantly running some bloated spyware only for a fraction of QMK/ZMK flexibility). I don't know if keychron is still the popular option, but their boards at least have the basic features with tons of layout options.

>>101424686it's too bad they couldn't drop the front of the monospace a hair lower for a bit more typing angle, it would have improved the look if nothing else. 70% + southpaw numpad is a great layout. The pricing's not very competitive, or I should say, wouldn't be very competitive if there was anything else right now. The look of the case itself is a mixed bag for me, I like the fluted back but the top case is pretty blah. I'm a bit concerned that there are no prototypes, no build streams, etc. Will it look like the renders? Who knows? It's still probably what I'd pick given the descriptions. >>101429753200€>>101429776I don't really care about customization, but yeah I do care a lot about being able to fix my shit.Could you give me an example where it could be useful for me to customize the keys? Are we talking about macros or something else?>>101429823I don't trust chinese keyboards, the only reason I'm considering a Logitech is because at work (programming job) I have to use a K120 and despite being here 5 years already, the keyboard still works like a charm and the letters are still clearly visible. So I was wondering if that quality reflected on their other more expensive keyboards. Also I'm italian and I would really like an italian layout since I'm accustomed with it and chink shit NEVER offer anything different from a standard US layout.
>>101429889>Could you give me an example where it could be useful for me to customize the keys?example one: you buy a keyboard and dislike the keys it comes with. You decide to buy heavier ones. Now you're happyexample two: you are italian and want an ISO layout. You reposition the switches on the pcb for an ISO layout (assuming it supports this—some do, many don't), put on Italian ISO keycaps, and program it for italian ISO layout in VIA.example 3: your left shift key dies after six years of use. You remove it and put in a new switch. Keyboard works again.example 4: one of your coworkers complains to management about the noise from your keyboard. You remove the switches and put in silent ones.example five: you put your legs up on your desk and hit your board, accidentally breaking a keycap. You easily replace it with another same size keycap (this happened to my brother twice)example six: your keyboard comes with a "Siri button" that drives you nuts. You reprogram it in VIA to do something normal.>chink shit never offer anything different from US layoutKeychron and Varmilo both do ISO layout boards.
>>101430083>you are italian and want an ISO layoutthis is a funny example, because the italian ISO layout can't type italian properly because it's missing accented capitals.
>>101430193I know nothing about Italy and its problems but this doesn't surprise me all that much
>>101429889>Are we talking about macros or something else? You can create your own ctrl button (layer) that allows for every key of your keyboard to have a second functionality (for example to open browser, change workspace, use functionality from your IDE), or you can have a different function for holding a button (or double click, or click and hold, called tap dance). It's just so crazily flexible and it stores on device so I can use them with my tablet or notebook without any extra config (and if I do, you can run the VIA/VIAL configurator in the browser).>I don't trust chinese keyboardsThen you shouldn't go with logitech mechanical keyboards (especially without hot swappable switches, if the key starts double clicking like my g613 did I hope you can solder). And of course, the letters being visible is only an issue because you can't change them freely (which also tend to be very good and cheap, such as pbt double-shot).

Cherry MX Clear or MX Purple are the Cherry options, but the stems are quite thick and have damaged keycaps for some. Gateron Baby Kangaroo is popular also. I myself have Jwick Taro switches and sorta like them, but they are not factory lubed—for me that was a plus because it means I can break them in more aggressively before lubing, but for most people that just makes them a pain in the ass.If you want to save some money, Gateron Jupiter Bananas are a cheaper switch which also fit the bill, another is Akko purples.

>>101433494Think that's where I saw them too back last winter or there abouts. I usually go light tactile but wouldn't mind something a little different. Lubing is kind of zen, starting to enjoy digging ancient switches out of storage and seeing how they handle a bit of grease.

>try some newer tactiles>already feel like slightly worse U4Ts, which are okay, but not really anything special>go back to the Chosfox Arctic Fox switches I was dailying for the last few months and immediately feels betterYeah, modern tactile switches are just kinda in a sucky place. Unironically think I like MX Brown and Clear better than most offerings today at this point. The "tactile bump at the top" style of tactility just feels odd, feels more like a hand saw's tooth that's stuck in the last bit of wood, rather than something cleanly gliding/snapping over something else, like click bars/click leaves. At least if the tactility is supposed to be "strong" or on the stronger end, that is. The bumps on Browns and Clears aren't nearly as pronounced, but the otherwise clean, linear press with a tactile event in the middle of them makes the entire keypress feel more consistent and enjoyable to type on IMO.Other than that I think the Chosfox Voyager switches were more enjoyable even than most other "totally not U4T/Panda" switches that make up 95% of tactile switches these days. That's probably because the tactile "bump"/event is ridiculously long on them at basically 2/3 of the entire keypress. Bit fatiguing to type on for me personally though. Apparently they also feel like Holy Bobas, which I've never tried. For the time being I'm gonna stick with click bar/leaf switches if I want some actually nice tactility. Real shame the community has been brainwashed by e-celeb influencers so much they won't even try clicky switches though.
>>101436976I have been driving some JWK cotton candies for awhile with a lot of the same thought in my head. Like that the bump is more in the middle not quite as late as a brown but not as early as these heavies tend to be. Zealies does some good work here but there isn't a ton happening in the tactile scene that really catches my eye right now. I like clickies. For about a week, from there on i find myself reaching for some quiet when I am just reading, and then more and more often until they are back on the shelf. Just aren't for me I guess but as far as sensations go there is a bit more going on with them and that's cool.
>>101437119Honestly for me I don't mind if they're whisper quiet or loud and proud. Love typing on my Model F and that thing is the definition of ping. It's just white noise to me.Now when I'm watching a video or something and go to write something down it is a bit distracting, really typing on anything that isn't "silent" is, but that's kind of whatever and not an always applicable situation. Probably just need to curb the ol' ADHD/autism from multitasking and focus on one thing at a time. Also the fact I have open back headphones certainly doesn't help, almost zero sound blocked. In an office setting I can understand not wanting something loud though, assuming that's the kind of office you're in. Can't say I've ever really typed while reading, at least while actively reading. More so just jotting down notes/bullet points, if I even do that.

>>101438786Not any of those anons, but keychron boards, at least all the ones I've gotten over the years, have all come with cables. You can usually see on their site what all comes included with whatever product of theirs. Also the Q6s I have from them are pretty easy to open, only 8 screws, and they come with a hex key to unscrew them. I'm pretty sure nearly all Q series boards from them are hot-swappable too, meaning if any switches are malfunctioning in the future you can simply pull them out with a keycap and switch puller and put a new one in within seconds.

Hey GeeLooking to upgrade from a crappy redragon mechanical keyboard, I was looking at he royal kludge m75. I've only used red switches so far and I this one comes in reds, browns and silvers. Silvers seem super sensitive because they're shorter, would it be best to be safe and pick browns? The keyboard is hot swappable so I could switch later I guess.
>>101441484I don't like hotswap either, loads of custom boards (including pretty much all the good ones) come with solder PCBs
>>101442419Browns are the most popular switch for a reason. If you want something sort of good at everything but exceptional nowhere browns are the go to. Doubt you will hate them but you're also not too likely to live them. Not a bad idea to check them off your list though as they represent a sort of middle ground between more exciting switches and you will have a better idea where you stand later down the line. A good 80% of my collection fall under the header "better browns" so I am definitely a fan.
>>101438786>why would you use it for 4 years if you didn't like it?I don't like wasting things that aren't "cheap" so I used it for a fair amount of time. A good keyboard is a (relatively) substantial amount of money. That means a lot of research before purchasing for me.
