Looking for a gayming keyboard without the gayming shit
Budget is ~$300 CAD
TKL onegai
I want the switches to be linear and with a satisfying sound you get from those ASMR videos.
I was looking at Keychron but I don't want South-facing RGB. Wooting has questionable QC and the waiting time seems to get fucky.
I can't do custom because I don't want to solder shit and I'm too retarded (I don't know where to look and I don't trust chinese parts and vendors)
I was looking at Razer and SteelSeries since they have a good reputation in terms of keyboards.
SS Apex Pro and Razer Huntsman V3 Pro caught my eye, especially Razer since I already have a Deathadder and their bloatware. But the keebs themselves sound fucking godawful.

Thoughts? Recs?

Soldering isn't as hard as it might seem. Getting a like $20 trash board and the cheapest possible iron would let you see if it's something g truly beyond you or not while costing almost nothing. Otherwise it all comes down to whatsoever remade has the sorts of flaws you can most easily live with.

Anyone use an Ergodox Wireless? I just got one and I'm working on setting it up. I don't know which one to buy! Very difficult decision. And I only have this week to decide because 2/3 options are likely to sell out quick

W1-AT very cool but I only have one shot at getting it right because the alignment plate is single-use and it's plateless only (all the plates have been sold out for a long time), not much fun. Could be a very nice board though. It's tempting.

Monospace is the least impressive but cheapest and in-stock. 1.7kg is pretty light (still heavier than my plastic full-size though). And 6 deg angle is a bit shallow for me, I like 8. Maybe it's not the last keyboard I'd ever buy. I think I'd get the red color.

Pangaea looks great—a real full-size!—except for the moving numpad gimmick. I worry the board won't sound as solid and whole (probably it's fine, but...), and aesthetically I find it bothersome that it's not all one whole piece for the top case. They don't say the PCB price, I bet that'll be expensive. Plus that 4-6 month wait... If I'm gonna spend that much money and wait half a year, I want it to be more perfect than this.
>>
>>101412595

>>
>>101424557
I don't know how anyone could type comfortably on a non-split ortho, plenty of people swear by it though. Hope you like yours
>>
>>101424686
Get the Monospace, the W1-AT layout takes some getting used to, and I don't think they go for a lot on aftermarket if you really want one after the fact. Plateless is also very jarring if you've never tried it before, I would strongly suggest trying a plateless board before buying one, personally I dislike how it feels a lot.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with a lightweight board, my F1-8X is a pain in the ass to move around on my desk since it's so heavy.

>>
>>101429565

>>
>>101429565
No, the point of mechanical is being able to easily replace switches and easily customize the keys through the firmware (and storing on the board instead of on one windows PC when constantly running some bloated spyware only for a fraction of QMK/ZMK flexibility). I don't know if keychron is still the popular option, but their boards at least have the basic features with tons of layout options.

it's too bad they couldn't drop the front of the monospace a hair lower for a bit more typing angle, it would have improved the look if nothing else. 70% + southpaw numpad is a great layout. The pricing's not very competitive, or I should say, wouldn't be very competitive if there was anything else right now. The look of the case itself is a mixed bag for me, I like the fluted back but the top case is pretty blah.

I'm a bit concerned that there are no prototypes, no build streams, etc. Will it look like the renders? Who knows?

It's still probably what I'd pick given the descriptions. Pangaea price only makes sense if that's your idea of the perfect board, and it sounds like you don't feel that way
>>
>>101429753
200€
>>101429776
I don't really care about customization, but yeah I do care a lot about being able to fix my shit.
Could you give me an example where it could be useful for me to customize the keys? Are we talking about macros or something else?
>>101429823
I don't trust chinese keyboards, the only reason I'm considering a Logitech is because at work (programming job) I have to use a K120 and despite being here 5 years already, the keyboard still works like a charm and the letters are still clearly visible.
So I was wondering if that quality reflected on their other more expensive keyboards.

Also I'm italian and I would really like an italian layout since I'm accustomed with it and chink shit NEVER offer anything different from a standard US layout.
>>
>>101429889
>Could you give me an example where it could be useful for me to customize the keys?
example one: you buy a keyboard and dislike the keys it comes with. You decide to buy heavier ones. Now you're happy
example two: you are italian and want an ISO layout. You reposition the switches on the pcb for an ISO layout (assuming it supports this—some do, many don't), put on Italian ISO keycaps, and program it for italian ISO layout in VIA.
example 3: your left shift key dies after six years of use. You remove it and put in a new switch. Keyboard works again.
example 4: one of your coworkers complains to management about the noise from your keyboard. You remove the switches and put in silent ones.
example five: you put your legs up on your desk and hit your board, accidentally breaking a keycap. You easily replace it with another same size keycap (this happened to my brother twice)
example six: your keyboard comes with a "Siri button" that drives you nuts. You reprogram it in VIA to do something normal.

>chink shit never offer anything different from US layout
Keychron and Varmilo both do ISO layout boards.
>>
>>101430083
>you are italian and want an ISO layout
this is a funny example, because the italian ISO layout can't type italian properly because it's missing accented capitals.
>>
>>101430193
I know nothing about Italy and its problems but this doesn't surprise me all that much
>>
>>101429889
>Are we talking about macros or something else?
You can create your own ctrl button (layer) that allows for every key of your keyboard to have a second functionality (for example to open browser, change workspace, use functionality from your IDE), or you can have a different function for holding a button (or double click, or click and hold, called tap dance). It's just so crazily flexible and it stores on device so I can use them with my tablet or notebook without any extra config (and if I do, you can run the VIA/VIAL configurator in the browser).
>I don't trust chinese keyboards
Then you shouldn't go with logitech mechanical keyboards (especially without hot swappable switches, if the key starts double clicking like my g613 did I hope you can solder). And of course, the letters being visible is only an issue because you can't change them freely (which also tend to be very good and cheap, such as pbt double-shot).

Wtf do you mean by that?
If you are looking for hall effect and/or "small latency" keyboard ain't many choices but gaming keyboards like wooting.
Unless you are extremely competitive you'll be just fine with a 1000hz polling rate keyboard.
>RGB
Honestly just forget about backlight. Especially north-facing. That's closing yourself from too many options. You'll have to get shitty and flimsy ABS shine-through keycaps also. It's not worth it.
I've been there and seriously do not miss backlight. My keycaps are light with black font and my monitor is enough to see them in the dark.
If you need them to pair with your RGB gaming set-up consider not being a faggot.
>Custom
>Solder
Soldering is for enthusiasts imo. Hotswap is pretty much always an option. You really don't have to.
>Thoughts? Recs?
Luminkey80 if you want something pre-built you can just buy.
Cycle8 if you don't mind going through a group buy and get your keycaps + switches separately.

1. Logitech is literally made in China now for most of their products.
2. China is the forefront of mech keyboards. Everything good (and bad) comes from China.

Ok then any heavy tactile will be ok probably. Boba U4T is the big meme today, Invyr Holy Panda was yesterday's meme. Cherry MX Clear or MX Purple are the Cherry options, but the stems are quite thick and have damaged keycaps for some. Gateron Baby Kangaroo is popular also.

I myself have Jwick Taro switches and sorta like them, but they are not factory lubed—for me that was a plus because it means I can break them in more aggressively before lubing, but for most people that just makes them a pain in the ass.

If you want to save some money, Gateron Jupiter Bananas are a cheaper switch which also fit the bill, another is Akko purples.

Shenpo is the budget king, I have 4 sets all excellent

Shenpo should not be considered anymore now that JC Studio exists. You can get it at a very similar price and JC Studio dyesub quality is WAY better.

I don't have a XMI (21kb) set, but they're supposed to be decent, like 30-40usd decent, don't pay any more than that.

OG Cherry dyesubs are the absolute gold standard in terms of dyesub sharpness and saturation, but they're not so good in terms of alignment. Here's my OG Cherry dyesub caps lock key (top) compared to GMK (bottom), for reference

Again, I don't own a CRP set but they're supposed to closely mimic OG dyesubs, unfortunately, unlike OG dyesubs their stems aren't properly recessed, so they sit higher, which can looks shitty.
>>

They're actually a bit hard to see with the naked eye, at least on the Purple. Not really sure why Cherry still keeps the stems on them like that, honestly. Probably just too cheap to update the tooling to fix what's been an issue/complaint amongst customers for a while now.

I see people say this all the time for some newer switches, but I bet they have ~95+% of the same force curve as U4T/Pandas/etc., just with a different spring.
Tactility from bumps on sliders is a bit of a joke. It's a real shame Zeal is sitting on their asses and not updating Clickiez with a lighter version yet, for both clicky and tactile, which they really should just sell as separate options.
>>
>>101434214
They're all pretty similar, honestly. Avoid CRP if colour accuracy is a major consideration, they fuck with the colour of their blanks between each round, some rounds of CRP are creamier and some are whiter.

>try some newer tactiles
>already feel like slightly worse U4Ts, which are okay, but not really anything special
>go back to the Chosfox Arctic Fox switches I was dailying for the last few months and immediately feels better
Yeah, modern tactile switches are just kinda in a sucky place. Unironically think I like MX Brown and Clear better than most offerings today at this point.
The "tactile bump at the top" style of tactility just feels odd, feels more like a hand saw's tooth that's stuck in the last bit of wood, rather than something cleanly gliding/snapping over something else, like click bars/click leaves. At least if the tactility is supposed to be "strong" or on the stronger end, that is. The bumps on Browns and Clears aren't nearly as pronounced, but the otherwise clean, linear press with a tactile event in the middle of them makes the entire keypress feel more consistent and enjoyable to type on IMO.
Other than that I think the Chosfox Voyager switches were more enjoyable even than most other "totally not U4T/Panda" switches that make up 95% of tactile switches these days. That's probably because the tactile "bump"/event is ridiculously long on them at basically 2/3 of the entire keypress. Bit fatiguing to type on for me personally though. Apparently they also feel like Holy Bobas, which I've never tried.
For the time being I'm gonna stick with click bar/leaf switches if I want some actually nice tactility. Real shame the community has been brainwashed by e-celeb influencers so much they won't even try clicky switches though.
>>
>>101436976
I have been driving some JWK cotton candies for awhile with a lot of the same thought in my head. Like that the bump is more in the middle not quite as late as a brown but not as early as these heavies tend to be. Zealies does some good work here but there isn't a ton happening in the tactile scene that really catches my eye right now.

I like clickies. For about a week, from there on i find myself reaching for some quiet when I am just reading, and then more and more often until they are back on the shelf. Just aren't for me I guess but as far as sensations go there is a bit more going on with them and that's cool.
>>
>>101437119
Honestly for me I don't mind if they're whisper quiet or loud and proud. Love typing on my Model F and that thing is the definition of ping. It's just white noise to me.
Now when I'm watching a video or something and go to write something down it is a bit distracting, really typing on anything that isn't "silent" is, but that's kind of whatever and not an always applicable situation. Probably just need to curb the ol' ADHD/autism from multitasking and focus on one thing at a time. Also the fact I have open back headphones certainly doesn't help, almost zero sound blocked.
In an office setting I can understand not wanting something loud though, assuming that's the kind of office you're in. Can't say I've ever really typed while reading, at least while actively reading. More so just jotting down notes/bullet points, if I even do that.
>>
>>101436467
Yeah but I could have had the real thing for $50 instead of getting some off color clone.

>>
>>101438786
Not any of those anons, but keychron boards, at least all the ones I've gotten over the years, have all come with cables. You can usually see on their site what all comes included with whatever product of theirs.
Also the Q6s I have from them are pretty easy to open, only 8 screws, and they come with a hex key to unscrew them. I'm pretty sure nearly all Q series boards from them are hot-swappable too, meaning if any switches are malfunctioning in the future you can simply pull them out with a keycap and switch puller and put a new one in within seconds.
>>
>>101438786
>aliexpress replacement switches costs almost nothing
The idea with hotswap is so that you can just put them in without having to desolder and solder again
The chinese brands are also well-established at this point
>I'll just give it back instead of losing my time replacing the keys
You can really only know what switch is ideal for you after using it for a long time. And there is no downside to having the ability to easily switch in the future

Browns are the most popular switch for a reason. If you want something sort of good at everything but exceptional nowhere browns are the go to. Doubt you will hate them but you're also not too likely to live them. Not a bad idea to check them off your list though as they represent a sort of middle ground between more exciting switches and you will have a better idea where you stand later down the line.

A good 80% of my collection fall under the header "better browns" so I am definitely a fan.
>>
>>101438786
>why would you use it for 4 years if you didn't like it?
I don't like wasting things that aren't "cheap" so I used it for a fair amount of time.
A good keyboard is a (relatively) substantial amount of money. That means a lot of research before purchasing for me. Never really got around to do it until recently because my keyboard was starting to bug out a little (double key presses). Also got a new job so that was sort of a treat.
>dense
Motherfucker you are the one who think the chinese can't make good stuff after 30 years of being the whole world's manufacturer. Drop does a sale atm and I was considering the set linked below but it's a 6.25u spacebar apparently.

Can someone using zmk tell me what I'm doing wrong? Why is it whenever I press printscreen, it does pgdown instead? Is the toggle layer fucking it up somehow?

F1-8X is just so good to type on and I think that's it for me for TKL or keyboard in general

>I remember hearing that topres change their feeling with use
topre fart sniffers say that the domes "age" and get more tactile but in my experience i haven't felt a difference from my hhkb pro 2 or my heavy grail aside from the silencing rings in the former. my realforce also feels different because of the steel(?) plate compared to the plastic of the hhkb.
>How does topre compare to holy pandas?
holy pandas in my experience were pingy pieces of shit people used in smothered cases filled with foam so they never heard the atrocious spring crunch. as far as tactility is concerned they're fine, but they're unrefined same as every mx tactile. compared to ALPS or topre, mx tactiles just feel like shit.

apparently a zoom 109 and "max" board in the works, but basically radio silence for the last several months since they were "announced"
real shame, the renders for the max make it kinda look like a bit more vintage style of a case
would love if it was some high quality hard plastic chassis if they really go that way, something like omnikey boards would be great. things are built like tanks. I could do without the screen on the left though personally, put in some extra keys there instead

My Tope is over 10 years old, if it's changed over time I can't tell. Maybe if I had a brand new one next to it to compare, but I don't need a brand new one because Topre is literally flawless technology.

So my Keychron K10 shitted the bed after 2 years of heavy use. Multiple keys not working, slow, unresponsive, etc
I was thinking maybe changing switches (mx cherry blue) but I was thinking that maybe a new keyboard is the answer.
I love this keyboard, how it feels to type and the minimalistic design. I was thinking of sticking to Keychron but I wonder what you guys recommend
>>
>>101450453
lol wait nvm I had the brilliant idea of swapping the switch from a random keypad key to a key that wasn't responsive and the switch was the problem.
Saved myself a couple hunded bucks. But I guess I have to get some switches.
I love the MX Cherry blue switches. Wonder if I could try something different that still has that kind of tactile response.

Anyone here had any success with custom-designed PCBs or self-wiring? I want to get into making custom boards but don't know where to start in terms of design. What software would be recommended for designing boards? I'm looking to make a small custom-wired keypad, I'm thinking to get a 3d-printed or metal case.

I've been on an Apex Pro TKL for over a year now and I'm pretty sick of it. It's one of the best Wooting copies, latency wise, but the build quality is really fucking shit for a $200 kb. Also fuck Steel Series GG software.

I've got one of these coming today. Competitive shooters are all garbage right now so I don't give a fuck about downgrading from rapid trigger to no rapid trigger. I spend 90% of my gaming time just playing surf on CS

Literally what I have been using for years as a professional developer, except mine is the wireless silent touch one.
>type during calls/meetings without announcing it to everyone involved

>wireless keyboard + mouse combo in 1 single usb that fits inside the mouse for transportation
>lasts around 1.5-2 years of minimum 8 hours / day use

Mechanical fags are blind, neither they read the post properly, nor they see the amount of money they're wasting of their toy keyboards, as they're blind in that regard, too.

Also, slightly off topic but does anyone have a trusted brand of thumb drives with a keyring attachment that you would recommend?

look for anything with dome with sliders, BTC dome with slider is my favorite as its MX compatible so you can throw new keycap sets on them https://deskthority.net/wiki/BTC_dome_with_slider#Keyboards

personally i dont like btc domes theyre kind of scratchy in every experience ive had with them. but thats not a bad argument at least you can put whatever caps you want on them and thats half the experience.

xmi have good reputation. blanks are same as Shenpo's afaik, ie really good thick blanks, and price is just a little higher. If you see people saying they're overpriced, that's because they tried jacking up their prices to like $80 a set for a while.

you will always be able to find a few people who will nitpick and be faggots like >>101457849 (I don't know why he thinks he can judge legend quality from a render)

I have the steelseries apex pro pos, and I want to put new keycaps on it. Its switches should be compatible with any cherry keycaps on the market but the faggots on steelseries decided to put the led at a higher than normal position, resulting in some keycaps getting stuck when you press on them. Does anyone know if there's a keycap set that works with this pos? The double shot cherry profile keycaps I tried were not good.
I know steelseries sells their prism rgb homo keycaps, but I don't want those. Something black, with no legends and keycaps shorter than OEM profile would be preferred.
>why did you buy that keyboard
It was the only full-size keyboard with HE switches available at the time.
