Genuinely, what were they thinking?

i don't know, mental retardation.
you need to constantly find that one weird cable, somewhere in a drawer at the back of your garage
>>
Did they really just combine two USB cables into one?
>>
I'm sure they had their reasons.

I don't love it, but I don't hate it.

Whats after usb-c
Why cant we have shadowrun jacks

They were thinking that they needed to maintain backwards compatibility with the old USB 2.0 micro-B connector but at the same time needed more room for extra data lines for 5Gbps operation which I assume simply didn't fit in the old 2.0 standard. That means they needed to build on top of the old connector such that they both maintain backwards compatibility but at the same time also get their extra data lines. Considering how the 2.0 micro-B connector was used on phones and all kinds of slim / portable devices, they probably thought that making the 3.0 version taller was a no-go, so instead they made it wider and added the extra 5Gbps data lines to the side.

It's certainly one ugly motherfucker of a connector but it's not hard to see the design constraints which pushed it into this sort of shape.

Those aren't considered that great because when you insert the plug it will likely short out random pins in the socket, not really ideal for a connector which you want to carry 100W worth of power and all kinds of high-speed digital signals for likely sensitive devices. Normally when you design a connector you want the grounding / shielding to connect first, only then the other pins and during this whole shebang you obviously want to avoid any shorts between pins which aren't intended to connect to one another either.

>when you insert the plug it will likely short out random pins in the socket

I said get it done!
I want it on my desk by tuesday!
>>
>>101549735
Doesn't the design of this piece of shit practically require you to insert it perfectly perpendicular to the socket?
>>
Nothing wrong with that connector. The issue was dumb fuck phone reviewers calling it ugly on the Note 3.

"Hey, I want to connect this external SATA drive to USB"

No, it's just one cable, you stupid cunt.

yes and that's why I hate it

Yeah, but if that's the case, where's the risk of shorting out socket pins?
