Obviously this only works with programs like text editors and compilers where the users are naturally programmers, and things would have been simpler if it stayed that way. Nowadays it's undeniable that there are some naive people who got tricked into doing free labor, not just for big corpos, but also people who manage to monetize off others' open-source projects.
