>The movement to replace the mainframe has re-invented not only the mainframe, but also the reason why people wanted to get rid of mainframes in the first place.
>In fact, it's FOSS that has enabled the web companies to bootstrap their start-ups so quickly and cheaply. It's FOSS that gave those web companies the flexibility to insinuate themselves as gatekeepers over our personal data.
>The open standards that liberated the personal computer from IBM have enabled the new web companies to cheaply build their own mainframe substitutes — the mainracks.
>Open standards and open source were supposed to liberate us from authority and the need for authority. Instead, they have made it attractive for millions of people to fall over themselves to make the prodigal son's return back to Holy Mother Church.
>The microcomputer(PC) revolution is over.
>Ultimately, there are only two natural kinds of computers: embedded systems and mainframes.

This article was written more than a decade ago, it's been over since a long time, in fact it's been even more over since then, so now that it's obvious that the personal computer revolution and the FOSS revolution have failed, and in fact have brought us back to the beginning but even worse, what are we supposed to do? How can we rebel? What is the next revolution going to be? Is freedom really the answer and if it's not then what are we supposed to be fighting for?

>what are we supposed to be fighting for?
Victory and conquest. The process and method doesn't really matter. What matters is that you're winning, or on the winning side. Freedom is for stupid people.

modern PC is the smartphone. take it, press the screen button, it gets back from the sleep mode, sleep and offline modes are same, the difference is time. theres no user dialog no logout/login designs, signout buttons at the hottest areas. modern desktop designers are mostly copyists which lack design skill or silo workers. they wont make you personal OS. chineese designs look funny though

>What matters is that you're winning, or on the winning side
For the average hacker centralization of computing will always be losing, this was true 50 years ago and it's still true today.
It's true even for the ones that work for the big corpos (the winners of today and yesterday) they are also just pawns, unless you are part of the small elite of bureaucrat, shareholders and top-level managers who benefit from the status quo you are on the losing side like the rest of us.
So the question remain, what kind of system can be created that allows the individual to win, or in other words to have control over their computing therefore decentralizing it?
How to overthrow the cloud/web-based status quo? (technologically speaking)

NatSoc would probably have loved centralized computing and total control of information, although the question of what would have happened if Germans instead of Americans won WW2 and therefore were the ones that developed computers will always be an interesting one.

>modern PC is the smartphone
Smartphone is basically a thin terminal for the web, although it is in theory a computer in practice it's not comparable to a real computer, neither the hardware or the software is designed to be anything else than a screen a consumer uses to interact with web-based apps, it was not designed to write or compile software, or to make art, or to make anything really, it's all about consuming.
It's dominance is the proof that the personal computer is dead.
