i use a surface pro for general "laptop" use and i have a asus G14 zephyrus as a portable desktop for when i travel

Honestly? I slightly regret the G14. it feels great to use until you're gaming, the fans are the whiniest things on earth. I know laptops are always going to be a bit noisy but this takes the cake. Performance is fine but at what cost?
Plus it loses a lot of performance when plugged into an external monitor, despite the fact one of the type c ports is meant to output directly from the gpu and that's supposed to actually increase performance.
the biggest problem is that now I'm spoiled by asus's amazing laptop keyboards and trackpad, and all the replacements I've been looking at don't compare at all

I've got an asus tuf gaming laptop. My last one was a tuf as well and I was homeless with that for nearly a year. Used it as a pillow in my rucksack so I know they can rake a beating and still work.

It's a zoomer thing I think. Like no fans and being able to open it with one hand. An entire generation of faggots and women.

I got a ThinkBook with a Ryzen 5500U, just got it on sale cheap a couple years back. Ironically using it more then my gaming desktop so in the future I might get a more powerful laptop and just use a eGPU dock for gaming.
>>
>>101791768
powerful laptops seem like a meme. the heat has to go somewhere and it needs very loud fans and a massive AC adapter
>>
>>101789867
Old HP Elitebook, dirt cheap to buy refurbished, easy acess to replace basics like ram, keyboard and ssd, and generally built with very good quality parts.

there is no equivalent to macs

macs have:
>soldered SSD/RAM/WLAN
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when pajeetOS runs out of RAM it swapfile rapes the SSD to death within 3 years
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when the SSD dies it bricks your entire currybook because the EFI is stored on the soldered SSD to save $0.05 on a dedicated chip
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>riveted keyboard that requires total destruction of the chassis to replace
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>serial numbered battery that prevents boot if you replace it yourself
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screens so fucking shit they have over 90ms response times (essentially 10Hz)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>flexgate cables that are so brittle they crack from opening your screen past 90 degrees more than 2 dozen times
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screen made from pajeet trash glass that cracks from temperature change in seasons or tape over the iBotnet webcam
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>so fire and explosion prone the FAA have banned them from all flights
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>uses phone CPU that's so shit it gets destroyed by half decade old i3s from 2017 and can only "compete" by cheating at benchmarks in extreme edge cases with hardware accelerators
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>curryniggers at apploo get so full of sniffing their own currynigger silicon shit they ship currybooks with no fans and they run so hot they melt the keyboard keys
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>keyboards with 63.5% failure rate
unheard of on PCs, and yet you curryniggers defend it with "jus werx fer me!"
just because you're in the 36.5% survivor group doesn't make your currynigger trash any good
this list goes on forever

theres no PC laptop as total fucking currynigger shit as crapple's streetshitterbooks
they are one of the biggest heaps of steaming currynigger shit in the history of computing second only to curryPhones

Retard question, my 10 year old laptop with a GPU is still pretty good for low end games but the issue I have with it is that even watching 1080p video streams cause the fans and GPU to go crazy, are modern 13" laptops able to handle that kind of content with low power/temp/silence? The USBC outputs video from the iGPU (e.g 780m). The HDMI is tied directly to the dGPU (eg RTX 4070)
I own one of these. I output video with thunderbolt for Linux desktop so it only uses the AMD iGPU and when I boot into a VM i use the HDMI port as I setup the GPU for pass through. I get really good performance on Fusion360, Dark and Darker, etc.
you’re unironically doing it wrong. Also they get stupidly hot. Make sure it’s always elevated.

M1 Macbook Air, just werks. Bought and sold this 3 diff times. Recently got another one on blowout new for $550. Tried the Pro 14, 15 inch M2 Air, and 13 inch M2 Air. The M1 air has a more ergo sloped keyboard, top firing speakers unlike the new airs, only downside is thicker top bezel so less vertical space. Have a 16 inch M3 Pro docked as a desktop but M1 air is the most kino portable device.

HP Notebook - 15-af131dx
Got it for 75$, and for 50$ upgraded the ram to 8gb running a system-d-less instance of Arch. Or I think it is. I still see system d stuff in the updates sometimes. But what ever. I just use it to browse or watch stuff sometimes.

Toshiba satelite C55-B in storage at the moment.
Got for Christmas like ten years ago. Upgraded to 8gb ram.

And an HP 250 G7 upgraded to 16 GB ram also in storage at the moment.

I need to upgrade to ssd some day but I'm focused on other financial matters.

Lenovo Ideapad 3. It's the one with the extremely good Ryzen 7 processor, think it was the 7 5700U. It works like a fucking champ and is ultra durable, but the display is comically dogshit.

How I got it was a weirdass story. I actually got it from some guy who I'm positive had stolen them on Facebook marketplace for 200 bucks, when it was supposed to be around 500. He had lifts, bottom lights and spikes on the Honda sedan he drove up in and said he had a whole room full of computers in-box to sell if I was interested in more.

>>
I spent a full week looking at all the laptops I could. I already own a desktop because I'm not retarded, so this laptop be an intermediary between work and home.

Here are conclusions I came to about laptops:

1. 99% of them are terrible.
2. Build quality is #1. In a portable device, bad build quality affects everything in usability.
3. Port selection does not matter really since, as an intermediary device, you can always just use an adapter until you get back home to your desktop.
4. Intel/AMD are both godawful and ARM is the only viable processor option.

With this in mind, there are only four valid options for good intermediary devices:

>Option 1: MacBook Air M1 for $649
>Option 2: Surface Laptop Snapdragon Plus for $999
>Option 3: Surface Pro Snapdragon Elite OLED for $1499
>Option 4: MacBook Pro 14" with M3 Pro for $1999

if you want to play video games on a computer, buy a PC
if you want to be portable, buy a SteamDeck
paying $2000 for a laptop of about the quality of a $1000 desktop is the most retarded, poorshit thing you can do
>>
>>101805969
But a good laptop would be more powerful than a steamdeck, wouldn't it? And I need to be portable. So why is the gaming laptop a bad idea? I'm willing to spend a bit since I'm hoping it will last a while.
>>
>>101806000
I repeat.
A "gaming laptop" is a complete waste of money. You do not need desktop quality on the go, and you cannot actually get desktop quality on the go. The return on investment is fucking terrible.
I made this mistake as a 25 year old and it took me years to realize it was a waste of time and money.
You can spend $2000 on a laptop, or you can spend $1000 on a desktop and $700 on a laptop and get much better return on investment

not cut it how? What are your requirements? Depending on your situation, you could also just have a PS5/Xbox and plug it into the tv in your hotel room. nta but I've found using the steam deck on an external to be a pretty miserable experience
for some reason there's like 50/50 chance that it works at all on any modern TV, it likes to just randomly fail some kind of handshake (i think) and just output static. I think it's some gay hdcp thing. Every time I connect my sdeck to a TV I have to keep unplugging and replugging it until it decides to play nice. But once it does, it's solid enough.
No idea what fuckery is causing it. I've never had a computer give me so much trouble just outputting to a display.
>>
>>101806445
fair enough, Im familar with HDCP issues. My PS5 freaks out if I plug into my receiver and then to the TV. It has to plug directly into the tv. I would blame the HDCP crap in the TV more than the steamdeck, but I understand what you mean.
The main issue is this anon wants portable desktop gaming which is not a thing.
>>
Anon if you're still here the good thing is you asked the question before plowing forward. You will always be dissatisfied with a giant gaming laptop. It will never deliver the performance you're looking for because you'll always know a desktop would be infinitely more capable.

>On a related note, how are the Framework keyboards?

framework owner here. keyboard is nice. keys have a nice travel. and are evenly separated. I have yet to mistype something that wasn't the fault of my own bad grammar. Palm rejection is also great. I don't know if this the works of framework, opensuse, KDE or a kernel driver but kudos.

Stuff that I like:

backlight is easily adjustable via fn + spacebar. On some other laptops this is not adjustable, either it's on or off. framework laptop has 3 levels of keyboard brightness.

You can swap the default behaviour of fn + F1 (silence for example) on the fly by pressing fn + esc to only needing to press F1 to silence. On other laptops you will need to go to the BIOS to do this or use some special OEM softare.

My only 3 minor complains are: 1) up arrow and down arrow are "split", meaning they split a regular key in 2 and those are your arrow key. After 2 weeks of use, I got used to this. 2) home, end, pg up, pg down are embedded in the arrow keys. You need to press fn + arrow up to do pg up. cumbersome but not the end of the world. 3) "Delete" is above the backspace key, making the muscle memory of " Top right key to delete" to be rewired.

who the fuck wants 16:9 in 2024? This was a cancer ratio drummed up in the mid 2000s for HD video when 4:3 was the perfect size, and ironically the proliferation of smartphones has laptop screens going back to more vertical space. 3:2 is best, even 16:10 is too low

Even Elitebooks have firmware problems, it's a shame when the physical build and modularity looks really very good, especially now soldering in the ram, wifi and ssd is becoming common practice
>What do you mean anon
PCIE ASPM is completely disabled meaning it drains power it doesn't need to, it's not going to be fixed either
HP is just a garbage company all around and you should never, ever buy an HP product

Go on notebookcheck.net and look around. Note that a light gaming laptop that can't max current year AAA games like a g14 is the best compromise and that luggables are dogshit

Thinkpad E495.
It has two cricks in it but I think it will hold together. Although, I will need to replace the battery soon. I don't know what I would buy if this thing broke. The E Thinkpad was the only laptop I could afford that let me open it and had a decent keybord.

I want to believe (and afford) this.

For work I have a Lenovo T14 and an HP Elitebook. Personal I have a M1 Macbook Air sitting in a drawer somewhere that I never use.

I have an elite book I stole from work
If it dies, I'd probably try to steal another
If I had to buy new, I would probably get a Chromebook

>nobody even owns desktops anymore.
You can’t be this retarded. Ignoring the massive gaming community, you also have the corporate world, which I’ll assume you’ve never stepped into because you’re NEET.

I have an older Latitude E5450 that's still perfectly fine for what I need it to do, running W10
If I were to replace it, a new AMD Inspiron 14 seems pretty cool
>8840U + 780M for gr8 performance and even good igpu if I want to play vidya
>16:10 IPS display
>16gb sodimm ram
>54wh battery
for under 700 yurodollars it seems pretty decent

I use an HP Probook 445 G7. I went back to school and needed something I could take with me. I bought it refurbed from Amazon for $300 and for the price its been great. 16gb of RAM, Ryzen 5 4500u, and a 512gb SSD. I dualbooted Fedora on it and it's been great. Even does a little bit of gaming just fine.
