Figured I'd start one, since they seem to go pretty well. What laptops have you guys gotten, recently? Do you like your current one? Are there any you're looking at?

The last laptop I got was in 2017 and I'm still using it because I'm not a retarded consoomer

I got a minisforum v3.
32GB RAM, ryzen whatever.
Its decent. Linux runs great. Battery life is tolerable if you just tell it to drop the refresh rate to 30-60hz when unplugged (about 5-6 hours).
I have no major complaints other than the ugly-ass copilot button on the keyboard but I just covered that up with a sticker.
>>
>>101890486
I can't provide the exact model as it's not with me right now but it's a 14 incher Dell with a high-end i5, 8gb ram, and a decent graphics card that even allowed me to play games until a few years ago

This is super frustrating, I have no clue where to get them. They're all Intel atom shitbooks from like 2009 OR chromebooks, which are barely even better and don't run Windows. I would kill for another smaller Windows laptop, tablets do NOT fill the same niche for me at all.

The atom flopped so hard that they didn't really make a successor. I suppose the best match would be what the Celeron has become, they're in all the small PCs and cheapo laptops that feature Intel processors.

I've seen a few low-midrange laptops from like 2018 with Pentium Silvers and maybe some more modern ones with Pentium Golds, but the quick answer is (I would guess) they're cheaper, and consolidating the "cheapo dogshit" sector is always good for profit. Most of the low-end sector seems to be Celeron.

Windows laptops that are more expensive than a Macbook Air are so stupid.

I'm not talking about shit like gaming or "pro" laptops but just these ultraportables like the snapdragon laptops or Dell XPS units starting at hundreds of dollars more than an MBA which is superior in every single way and has the Apple brand on top of it. Dumb dumb dumb.

Not... quite. Could be, but it's likely stolen. Which weirdly makes it more trustworthy, my ideapad 3 with a Ryzen 7 5700u (which was like 500+ bucks, still 300-400 now) was being sold for 200 by some weirdass dude who had very clearly obtained them through sketchy means. Going overseas for a month so bought this as a laptop replacement. 7945HX, 4080, 32gb RAM, and 2x1tb nvme. It was on sale for ~2900$ CAD, so it's pretty much impossible to get more bang for the buck than this beauty.
The reviews complained about some features removed from last year's model, but it feels sturdy as fuck, and performance is around 75% of my desktop. Not bad for such a portable device.
I was also looking at some ASUS scars or Acers, but again, the price + performance was just too good to pass up on.

Atom wasn't just a product line, it was an entire microarchitecture. They still use derivatives of the Atom cores, they're the E-cores in modern Intel processors. The i7 version of the t480 is garbage, if you look at benchmark sites the i7-8650U and i5-8250U are listed as having almost exactly the same performance. But in the t480 the i7 version actually performs worse than the i5 because of thermal throttling.
>>

Interesting, are the thermals on the thinkpad just not great? Is the i7 turboing a lot? They both have a 10-25 watt TDP with a typical of 15.

I have a t480 (i5 version) and it never feels like it's overheating, the fan usually is at medium capacity. I have only heard anecdotally that the i7 version gets too hot and throttles. Some refurbed $600 lenovo ideapad 5i i bought a month ago that retailed for $1500 with an i5 13th gen and rtx 3050, 120hz 1440p screen
>Do you like your current one?
Its everything i couldve ever asked for. My current desktop has an i5-8400 so it blows it the fuck out of the water. Keyboards great. Screen quality is fucking amazing. I just hook it up to my old monitor. Im in love with the dual monitor workflow.

I hear so much shit about how laptops have shit thermals and build quality and desktops are so much better. Bitch, the fuck up. I never hear the fan kick on ever, even in high performance mode. Its insanely thin. I can just unplug it and take it with me anywhere and instantly get back to what I was doing. Shits great
>Are there any you're looking at?
Riding this one out for the next 5 or so years til i can supersede it again when the value suits it. Unless i dont need the extra performance in that time and things are still running well.

Every time I close the lid on my laptop and I come back to it later it's dead and 0% battery.

If I shut it down and then boot it up it's okay.
If I charge it to 100% it lasts maybe 2 hours-ish.

My mom uses a 10+ year old HP laptop at home (only).
She has it on some sort of stand that she brings close to her on the couch and plays bridge on it.

I'm thinking of buying her a refurb 17" since she never takes it anywhere, but there's no 17" refurb or used laptops anywhere. Did no one ever buy them?

Maybe I should buy her a proper 24" monitor and a refurb office desktop but it's hard to make a couch setup.

my monitor is an OLED G9, with a 5120 x 1440 resolution. I want my laptop to be able to neatly plug into its dock (which is mounted to the underside of my desk) via a SINGLE cable -- which, to support this output, has to be thunderbolt. so i basically got this laptop for its small size and the fact that it has thunderbolt 4. it actually has no USB-A ports and no numpad, which is a mild inconvenience as I'm an engineer and actually use my numpad frequently, but the vast majority of the time it's docked and I'm just on my full-size kb.

anyway it's a very nice little laptop.

Not my primary machine, but I somehow scored a Chuwi Herobook 514 at the Goodwill bins for $8 a couple months ago. Looks attractive, slim, obviously took cues from Macbooks. (pic) But it's pretty flimsy plastic shit. Trackpad is awful. Keyboard is mediocre. Power supply seems not too far removed from the original GameBoy one. And while I'm sure not part of the intended design, it overheats if I don't use it on a cooling pad ... would that be a thermal paste issue? ie. the original owner dropped it and it damaged the connection/coverage.

Odd machine. Screen is 1920x1080, I had to lower it to be able to see anything. If you don't touch the trackpad on startup, the trackpad doesn't work.

My travel laptop is a X230 with a nicer screen and the X220 keyboard.
I don't like the 16:9 aspect ratio, 768p resolution and how loud and warm it gets, so I would kind of like to replace it, but I also have yet to find a newer laptop that doesn't seem like it'd overall be worse.
If I could I'd use my X61 or T61 but these are even louder and slower. Of course the Macbook Air is the go-to for silent and nice screen, but the keyboard looks dubious, I hate touchpads (vs the nipple) and Linux support doesn't seem to be there yet.
>>
>>101906218
If you buy one of the newer models that charge via USB-C you can just chug a cheap 20,000 powerbank in your backpack and it's like having another battery.
But these modern laptops seem to last a lot longer too, anything made in the last few years seems to get like 6+ hours battery life out of a typical 50kwh battery, and some laptops even have 75+ kwh batteries.

What's a minefield is the screen quality, I was looking at used HP Elitebooks and it's very confusing because some have really good IPS screens with 500+ nits brightness but the ones you can find cheaply are the ones with a shit screen and there's no easy way to differentiate the models.

They're asking like low 300's for a 16gb model, "grade a" refurb.

I'm seeing R*ddit posts that it gets like 5-6 hours of battery life on normal use which is good enough for me, I'm sure performance on an i5-8000 series is great anyway for light use.

The big question is, how bad is the screen?

Not at all. Unless you're a real fucking oldhead who loves the freedom of removable parts and browsing the internet at one mile per hour, Dell has been dogshit for years. I'd say any thinkpad/elitebook in the past 10 years is better. Except for that one spell HP had around Intel's 10th generation where they made every one of their laptops dogshit, instead of every one of them except elitebooks.

>Anyway the T480 is the Thinkpad I am finding the most amount of refurbs on for some reason, is it any good?

This is normal, the t480 is the big memed thinkpad that people scrambled to grab once they hit mainstream. It's basically the best of the old ones. The screen is fine, but Lenovo isn't really known for their screens. The brightness is real low, like 260 nits, but the gamut is better than a lot of their other laptops.

Also, get the i5 version. The i7 has thermal issues and chews through battery, barely performs better. Some say it's actually slightly worse due to heat.

It's last year's model, practically still new. Why is it already refurbished? What happened to it?
They're also offering it with all possible keyboard layouts which makes me think it was damaged and they're going to replace the keyboard with whichever one the buyers pick.

Only rule I follow:
Don't get thinshit.
The thicker, the more air, the hotter the air, the shorter the battery life... THE BETTER!
>>
>>101909954
I mean, shit gets messed up all the time. I'm sure you've busted or returned something after using it for under a year. That being said, used laptops just drop like flies in value instantly, they're like cars. It's not that they're any worse, it's just that companies massively overcharge for them. Still, if this is a sketchy site, I'd go on HP's website or find a reputable ebay seller, ebay has 'em for similar prices.
>>
>>101910026
I mean, thick-ass laptops usually have way better thermals, which means better battery life and cooler, less noisy air exchange.

I have M1 MacBook and Lenovo Legion. I like both, but I'm not a big fan of having two computers if I could have only one.

MacBook is better in everything, but video games.
Lenovo Legion is just for games.

Overall I could use only Lenovo, but it's not handy, it has a huge charger and battery life is not good.

Generally I'm looking for an arm laptop with Windows that would have similar battery life, screen quality and performance as MacBook and on which I could play some games.
I saw a few reviews of Windows arm laptops but they don't look very good at the moment.

Or as a solution I could just stop playing video games and use only MacBook.

I bought an HP Envy 13 x360 2021 some years back cause of the ltt video shilling the envy line. Build quality is concerning (trackpad broke after a year so had to get that repaired), the battery life is a laughable 4-5 hours of web browsing, and it just chugs despite the Ryzen 5 processor, ssd, and 16gb of ram. Also the shell's getting permanent scuffs so that's ugly and I got the privacy screen and that has abysmal view angles and issues with reflections (ie. from ceiling lights.)
But the stylus and touch screen are lifesavers for taking drawn notes in university and it's kinda lightweight and the keyboard's nice so I guess I'm satisfied overall. If I had to upgrade I'd go for a refurbished convertible business laptop on sale, assuming those have better build quality.

all modern windows laptops have what's called Modern Standby, which means they don't have true Sleep(S3) in which everything other than the RAM is off. What they now have is this Modern Standby(S0) "sleep" which keeps the CPU and network adapter powered on as well. Because of this, your laptop can randomly download and install an update while in your bag, leading to it being at like 5% battery when you take it out, or even catch on fire. There's no fix for this because it's a firmware issue that the vendors refuse to address, partly because the issue may be deeper than that and Microsoft has no answer.

Windows laptops are certified garbage now.

It's not Windows itself. It's the computers they're making now for Windows, which means all of your linux machines, too. You can fact check me by checking the sleep states on your linux machine right now in the terminal. They will say they don't support the S3 state among others. Macbooks for example have this S0 crap now too, but they give you an option to disable it and just use S3 again.

macs being for fags is literally a meme anon. like it doesn't relate to its hardware or software. it's genuinely good. stop listening to random NEET faggots who shower on a monthly basis

there is literally no laptop that can run linux properly other than chromebooks. linux has shit power management like ASPM bullshit. inb4 some retard says their distro just werkz when it gets like 5hr battery lif and the fan spins up when watching a youtube video

there is no equivalent to macs

macs have:
>soldered SSD/RAM/WLAN
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when pajeetOS runs out of RAM it swapfile rapes the SSD to death within 3 years
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when the SSD dies it bricks your entire currybook because the EFI is stored on the soldered SSD to save $0.05 on a dedicated chip
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>riveted keyboard that requires total destruction of the chassis to replace
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>serial numbered battery that prevents boot if you replace it yourself
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screens so fucking shit they have over 90ms response times (essentially 10Hz)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>flexgate cables that are so brittle they crack from opening your screen past 90 degrees more than 2 dozen times
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screen made from pajeet trash glass that cracks from temperature change in seasons or tape over the iBotnet webcam
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>so fire and explosion prone the FAA have banned them from all flights
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>uses phone CPU that's so shit it gets destroyed by half decade old i3s from 2017 and can only "compete" by cheating at benchmarks in extreme edge cases with hardware accelerators
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>curryniggers at apploo get so full of sniffing their own currynigger silicon shit they ship currybooks with no fans and they run so hot they melt the keyboard keys
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>keyboards with 63.5% failure rate
unheard of on PCs, and yet you curryniggers defend it with "jus werx fer me!"

theres no PC laptop as total fucking currynigger shit as crapple's streetshitterbooks
they are one of the biggest heaps of steaming currynigger shit in the history of computing second only to curryPhones

i went on a retard spree and bought some x220, 220i and a 230 and a 490. The 490 is fine but get the S version for the better panel. I'm getting about 4 hours with the TN panel, 8th gen i5.
Depending on what you need to do I am with many others in thinking the x220 is probably never going to be topped. They're actually the best laptop design i've ever used, but you need the IPS panel. You can use TN but you won't enjoy it. The 9 cell batteries are giving me around 4 hours of life with browsing and farting around, playing videos. I can probably stretch it, especially on the TN i3s but I'm planning on putting IPS in them. But with MSATA and 9 cell on i3 I bet I will be able to get at least 4 or 5 hours

I really really loved the look of the 12'' Powerbook G4. Finding a mint condition would be very difficult though. Even ignoring the batteries and the dimmed LCDs and whatever corrosion the motherboards have endured; the fucking aluminum bodies are all dented and scuffed all these years later.

there are literally no x86 laptops with decent battery life and I don't want to use fucking macOS.
I wish I was a neet
>>
>>101916078
Only reason Apple's battery life is so good is because Apple codes for specific hardware. It's literally optimized to the bone for good battery life. If you want true power though, x86 is king. Sure battery sucks but it's getting better yearly.

It's magnetic bro. How can you fuck it up that bad, seriously. Does your laptop and desk move that much, or are you downsy?
>>
I got a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 almost 5 years ago. The actual computery parts are fine, but the chassis is a cheap piece of shit that is being held together with rubber bands and epoxy. I didn't get as much use out of the tablet mode as I thought I would.

It being magnetic is actually part of the problem. The way the edge is angled means that you either have lift it up to fully seat it, or leave it all up to the magnetism. More often than not, it ends up sideways when you do the latter.

>Does your laptop and desk move that much, or are you downsy?
No. But everywhere I work has my nearest outlet to my left. Having to wrap the cable around the rest of the laptop doesn't help.

>>101910026
if you have external hotswappable batteries you don't have to worry about this des, hehe

isn't it possible to put a really fat ass battery in a framework 16? has someone made one/done that yet?

Damn, my Lenovo Legion5 burned out the battery in 12 months. I still use it as an HTPC but it has to stay plugged in.

they just work. it's linux and very lightweight. yes, it's google, but you can just make a fake account and stop caring. it's seamless, frankly. it's like how linux should be. and all of the laptops are "regulated" like the keyboards are all the same configuration, all of the trackpad gestures are the same. It's not like windows laptops at all. it's like macbooks, but with more selection.

also if you want to mess around with the linux stuff on it, get an x86 chromebook, not an ARM one like mine. being cool and fanless and having a 13hr battery life is awesome, but it also can't really run anything other than the stock applications and stupid mobile apps in the play store that barely work properly. it's also too slow and too little RAM.

get at least 8GB RAM, and something multiple times faster than my MT8183. also at least 13.3" and ~1080p.

>>101899625

lmao. have you ever bought an oled? after my tv had burn in and my old phone, i'm good. maybe things have changed in the past 10 years, but im not wasting money.

Is this the best all-round + gaming laptop on the market right now?
>solid build quality and no gaudy gayming lgbt bullshit
>excellent keyboard
>2880x1800 120hz OLED screen
>ryzen 7 7840HS + RTX 4060, good enough performance without melting a hole through your desk
>ram is soldered in but it's 32GB at 6400Mhz so who gives a fuck
>dual m.2 slots
It does get noisy under load and it lacks an ethernet port which is regrettable but overall it look fucking great

nigger faggot the latest Intel X1 carbon gets 13+ hours. This ATmRN faggotry needs to stop. In exchange for a crippled PC you'll get like 2-3 more hours. Each hour after approximately 10 hours has massive diminishing marginal returns. AMD x64 CPUs can probably get slightly more battery. Faggot

Worst laptop you've ever owned?

Picrel, this Acer Aspire One was a giga piece of shit. An SSD and 8 gb of ram from the previous owner couldn't save it from choking at every possible point, shit could barely open notepad.
>>
>>101923469
Work has given me a Dell Inspiron 13 which is a 2-in-1 that flips to go into tablet mode
It's got an i5-8000 series CPU, 8gb RAM and an SSD - on paper it should be fast. But for some reason it's so damn slow and the fans get loud and stay stuck at 100% after a while.
Battery life is about 1.5 hours at best, usually closer to 1 hour.

In tablet mode it's just too heavy and slow and unwieldy.
>>
>>101923469
I had an acer aspire 3 that made me wait 2 minutes to open outlook web, then it would crash so I would refresh then wait another 30 seconds and it would finally open after all that time with close to 100% CPU utilization. And that was with a sata SSDWWSW too

HP Omen 16"
Ryzen 7 - 7840HS

IPS 165hz

He's asking 1100€ can probably squeeze him down to triple digits

I don't care about the "gaming laptop" I just want a laptop that's fast and stays cool and quiet. Gaming laptops seem to have decent cooling while all the ultraportables I'm seeing are shit.

Also, I see that in the US you can buy brand new laptops dirt cheap as long as it's last year's model

Is there any EU website that does this? I wouldn't mind ordering from an EU store as long as it's QWERTY and cheap. I'd much rather get a brand new last year's model than a used last year's model.

Brought a new laptop recently, my only requirement is that I wanted an AMD GPU, since well, I heard a lot that AMD was better on Linux.

Ended up getting the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 "Advantage" Edition (all AMD)
I got the high end model which comes with a Ryzen 9 7940HS, Radeon RX 7700s, with a QHD+ 240hz screen. I got only this for about $1200, Then I added 4TB SSD for home and a 256GB SSD for root, and 96GB (2x 48) of DDR5 ram.
Total came to be about $1650

Been my workhorse lately and have no issues with it!

Waiting for Qualcomm to finish Linux upstreaming and for a brighter screen option in a Thinkpad.

For now, it's good enough.
