Whats bad about it
>>
>>101912012
Im not being negative, you are.
>>
frameworks are gay. just build the website or app from scratch. if you're not willing to do that, you're not passionate enough, the users will notice, and nobody will show up to your birthday party because you're a phony
>>
>>101912061
i think you're in the wrong thread
>>
>>101912012
It's not Apple
>>
I don't see the point of frameworks when you can do the work yourself just as well.
>>
>>101912012
Nothing as far as I can see, they are a great bang for your buck as far as hardware goes and they support Linux explicitly
My only gripe with Framework and by extension System76 is complaints about build quality. I don’t want to work on something cased in recycled sprite bottles
>>
>>101912012
battery life for one.
Also the screens aren't the best. They even admit for the 2024 model, they went and got a rounded corner screen even though it doesn't work right with the chassis because it was cheap to use this screen since it had been developed for some other laptop already.
Stuff like that means the fit and finish isn't as good as a laptop created to fit together.
Also I've heard the thermals are kind of shit.
There are lots of problems with it, but I keep watching because I think they are slowly getting better in quality.
I've heard the 16" one is absolute shit though. Don't buy that one.
>>
>>101912012
The main big downside is the price. About everything else is pretty good
>>
>>101912213
why would system76 be an extension of Framework? They are two different companies. System76 just buys clevo laptops and rebrands them. Framework is its own thing
>>
>>101912225
thermals are shit
every once in a while it dips below 0.4GHz and I have to open it up, unplug the battery and coin because it gets fucking stuck

you don't want to do this too often because you can bend a pin in the battery connector, it's not meant for constant unplugging
>>
>>101912213
framework had it's motherboard designed by the same contractor as 76, they're completely different things.
>>
>>101912012
My last laptop was inspiron 7577, since then I build a gaming PC and a server, I daily drive an old modded Chromebook 11.6" celeron with archcraft and have no problems with it with a 7h SOT on a single charge all for $60, so why the hell would I buy ur slop ?
>>
>>101912277
Did it have a warranty? Or did it start happening after the warranty expired?
That sounds annoying as hell
>>
>>101912251
They’re not explicitly an extension of each other, but they both fall under the umbrella of “libre” laptops with an emphasis on repairability. I would lump them in the same category and my assessment is they share a lot of the same issues of scale, since they don’t have the fabrication means of a giant like Lenovo, HP, or Dell
System76 sells laptops they don’t make that support Linux, Framework sells components they don’t make in a laptop housing of their making and that supports Linux too. Is it such a stretch to mention them in the same sentence
>>
>>101912213
they are absolutely not a good bang for buck. they are novelty

Literally refuses to sleep. expansion cards drain the battery while its refusing to sleep. registry hacks and bios updates do nothing.

screen flickers repeatedly when switching between dgpu and integrated graphics.
>>
>>101912012
desu, i really like the idea of selling whole motherboards, you can build whatever you want like this
>>
>>101912012
The RISC-V board isn't out yet. Maybe 1-2 more years until it is usable for enthusiasts. I'd buy one when they use a totally open source CPU, and main board. More open than Core/Libreboot. Actually open hardware.
>>
>>101913401
Risc V isn't open source
>uh, don't you know blah blah blah
There's no Risc V processors that are actually open source except for toy CPUs only good for basic development. They're all just based on an open ISA, that's like saying the PS5 OS is open source because it's based on FreeBSD. It's not. Any CPU that comes out of Risc V will be just as closed as every other CPU that you currently use.

btw given that we all know you exclusively use closed source CPUs, why is some arbitrary laptop manufacturer "bad" if they don't offer an alternative?
>>
>>101912012
>only one M.2 SSD slot on FW13
>shit UEFI
>EC kernel driver didnt merge yet so no fan control without going out of your way
Otherwise nice. FW13 Ryzen 7040 has Coreboot in the works. Hope it will get somewhere.
>>
>>101913505
>RISC-V isn't open source!
>except for all the open source CPU's, don't look at them because I said so
>>
>>101913685
>except for all the open source CPU
Greentext shitpost. Name an actual open source CPU.
>>
Do these things have good battery life? I don't mean swapping batteries though.
>>
>>101912012
overpriced
also they take forever to ship bios/firmware updates
>>
>>101913506
Coreboot will easily make the UEFI point moot. Hopefully they can make a good driver for the fans and maybe add a second M.2 slot on future 13 motherboards.
>>
>>101913506
All their 13" models have only one SSD slot? Or is it a soldered+slot thing?
>>
>>101914449
All of them only have one. Not a deal breaker to some people but to others it can be.

I've seen an archtard using this irl and he was mad smelly. My female friend (yes XX chromosome) said she smells like shit and unironically does the pic rel pose when she sees him running around. Sad to say that his framework laptop falls apart and looks like completely shit but hey at least it's repairable and he can claim free Louiss Rossman dick sucking credits you know.
>>
>>101914607
Definitely for me. Looks like the 16" models are more sane in that regard though.
>>
>>101912225
I got way better battery life after upgrading my bios... If you haven't done it, give it a shot. Arch+KDE gave me better battery life compared to ubuntu+gnome as well.
>>
>>101915367
this, I'm still on my first battery from 2021 on my tiger lake machine
>>
>>101912012
I heard the upgraded screen has terrible smearing. The adapter cards are a gimmick and not all 4 usb-c ports support all features so you're limited on io layout. The hardware in general is expensive as fuck too.
That being said I'm waiting for a 360 degree touch panel before I buy. I might get a minisforum v3 in the meantime to tide me over.
>>
>>101915041
I unironically like Louis Rossman.
Anyway, sounds like he doesn't take care of himself or his tech. Hopefully Framework improves vastly either way, I like their stance on upgrades and repairs, so hopefully they put pressure on HP, Lenovo and the other big brands.
Especially Apple. Those cunts need to stop soldering everything to the machine.
>>
>>101912012
Is there any alternative now that xps15s and many thinkpads are moving to soldered ram?
>>
>>101912316
This laptop isn't for you. Any chink streetshitter used tech will fill your interests just right.
>>
>>101912012
the removal gpu on the 16" is a limited amount removable gpu. some connector eventually fails if you do it too much.
>>
>>101916575
Hence why I'd just get the 13 if they git gud and get a USB-C eGPU if want to do muh gayming.

in that sense, the framework motherboard is an open platform (almost) like ATX.
>>

I have that exact setup (4090 eGPU, 13")
yeah there's no game I can't play, but you sometimes really feel the bandwidth limitation.
what you really want is to take the module on the back of the 16" and turn it into an Oculink port

Needs secondary discreet GPU. I did not studder: needs secondary discreet GPU.

... and that GPU needs to have a high end Cadillac option of ≥16GB VRAM.

I did not studder: needs secondary discreet GPU. Not a single GPU, a discreet second GPU! Think: Qubes OS and passthrough.

Until then I buy P-series Lenovo (thickest hottest cunts I can).

Objectively its price. I can look past that though since you do really have a modifiable laptop and repairing shit won't be a hassle. If they can only find a way to mimic the thinkpad keyboards then they would get the thinkpadfags sucking Patel's dick.

As much as I like the idea of a repairable laptop, getting a framewirk made me realize I would much rather have a functional laptop.
I don't know if I got bad RAM and a bad GPU or just shit drivers, since I got the AMD hardware and installed Ubuntu, but the screen fucks up every time I fullscreen anything and it randomly hard freezes for 15+ seconds if I do anything that puts a slight bit of load on it, like editing fucking text.
The thing cost $1200 and my mom's $200 Dell I put Linux Mint on would probably be a better daily driver.
Oh epic, I can le unscrew le backplate and replace the hard drive.
The computer does not fucking function. It is ewaste. Unsalvageable.

An opinion worthy of digits

Literally all you ever need is either a Dell with 8th or 9th gen (Precision 3530 seems to be better than Latitude 5501 due to more repairable design and cheaper price), or a ThinkPad T480 if you are a university student that constantly kicks and hauls his laptop around the city.

And both laptops have upgradable batteries and will have better battery life than any Framework. But I like the Precision 3530 more over the T480 that I switched from, because it does not throttle under continuous load, the Quadro P600 dGPU is actually useful (unlike the NoVideo MemeX150 limited to 70C and to a halt after 5 minutes, and has no NVENC), and because the palmrest stays cool, which is somehow a problem on the T480. Best of all, Precision 3530 is actually even more repairable than the T480 due to modular DC jack, and most importantly, it's a bigger bang for your buck at ~$250. The battery is upgradable to 92Wh too.

I think they should ditch laptop formfactor altogether and make 13-16 inches tablets. Let people bring their own keyboards.
>>
>>101921439
That would be awesome. I almost always use my framework with an external keyboard.
>>
>>101921439
Surface Book existed and it was bad. There's nothing bad with 16" laptops like Redmi Book Pro 16 2024 now.
>>
>>101921439
I don’t get the tablet meme. I have both a laptop and a tablet and I use the laptop way more. All I need is a phone and a PC, the tablet feels unnecessary to me, especially for real work. A 2n1 is just an expense I can’t see myself enjoying.
>>
>>101912012
expensive

I can buy a Macbook air for about the same which works OOB, has significantly better battery life and performance and is smaller.

I can sell it for 70 - 85% of what I paid in a year or two and buy the latest model.

They jumped the gun way too early. With ayyyymd apus x86 tablets start to make sense. Steamdeck and its chinese competitors are effectively that - amd x86 tablets. Minisforum released their v3 tablet recently too, device makes a lot of sense in my opinion.
>I don’t get the tablet meme
With wireless keyboards getting better theres not much sense in having it integrated. Id prefer using my own keyboard over using laptop one. I admit that thats a niche case, but its not like framework print laptops at dells or lenovo scale anyway.
