Halo 2 was too ambitious. It was like two generations too early for the tech it was trying to push. Even if they did manage to ship stencil shadows, the resolution/performance would have been too low. pic-related is only simulated/approximated btw, it's not even the real deal that could have been with pixel perfect shadows and dynamic lights.

I'm trying to undervolt a 4070 super here. I'm fine setting core and memory clocks on MSI afterburner, but when using the curve editor to undervolt, it doesn't matter if I adjust any other settings (I can just use stock core and memory clock settings) that my memory clock frequency will get halved during benchmarks. Any ideas? It just gets capped to 1250mhz.

From what I can see skimming current offerings:
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/#s=41&f=7&sort=price&c=160

The ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi despite being M-ATX still has support for 3x M.2-2280 slots, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Headers & 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Header and a fine 8-phase VRM with beefy heatsinks for $150 is hard to argue against for value:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qcbRsY/asrock-b650m-pro-rs-wifi-micro-atx-am5-motherboard-b650m-pro-rs-wifi
^Only real downside I see is it uses the Realtek ALC897 audio chip which is getting long in the tooth but it's still serviceable.

If you need something any cheaper I'd go for the ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2 @ $140
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Dq4Zxr/asrock-b650m-hdvm2-micro-atx-am5-motherboard-b650m-hdvm2

Any cheaper and you get into trash like MSI PRO B650M-P & Gigabyte B650M K that can't run AM5 chips without throttling or really barebones A620-based boards:

Professional retard here:
One of my friends found an Asus LGA 1700 for cheap on FB marketplace. My fellow retard is thinking about it, but he's scared about the ongoing bullshit with 13th and 14th gen defects or whatever, as am I.
Q1: Does it extend back to 12th? Or has that gen been spared Intel's dumbfuckery?
Q2: I'm an AMD fag who has always tolerated their bullshit. Is AM4 still worth it for a newfag? Or should I tell him to pony up for an AM5 mb?
No need for in depth answers, anything is fine by me. Thanks in advance, anonies.
>>
>>102210730
>Q1: Does it extend back to 12th? Or has that gen been spared Intel's dumbfuckery?
No, just 13 & 14th Gen. Also if he buys a fresh 13/14th Gen CPU fresh now and install the latest BIOS it should keep it from ever degrading.
>Q2: I'm an AMD fag who has always tolerated their bullshit. Is AM4 still worth it for a newfag? Or should I tell him to pony up for an AM5 mb?
Depends on his budget and what he plans to do with his machine. Ultra cheap gaming? AM4. Big multi-threaded projects? AM5. All-arounder? LGA 1700. High-end gaming? AM5 (for the 7800X3D).

>No, just 13 & 14th Gen. Also if he buys a fresh 13/14th Gen CPU fresh now and install the latest BIOS it should keep it from ever degrading.
And not just "all 13th & 14th gen". It doesn't effect i3's and i5's that aren't K skus. So if he's going lower end it won't matter.
If he buys a new higher end chip then the new bios will sort it, and he can also learn to undervolt them and power limit pretty easily and will get 90% of the max performance but below 250w and with zero risk of the voltage issue.
Intel are rumoured to be releasing a new series of LGA 1700 CPU's early next year that won't be impacted by the bugs, and then later in the year variants with just P cores.

Because I'm not poor and I still get improvements in other non-gaming stuff I do. I upgraded to a 13900k and DDR5 for Battlefield 2042 because the 9900k I had was starting to be a performance blocker in certain things (3 years old and I use large res high hz monitors), and got my 3080 mostly for Cyberpunk (although it was only their delays which had the game come out after), which let me finally retire my SLI 980ti's that were over 5 years old at that point and with SLI finally being killed off they were at the end of their useful life.

I've recently moved to new location and the room where my computer is actually very dark so perhaps some lights inside the case would help in the situation.

What's a decent cheapish 30-34" QHD/4K monitor these days? My main monitor just died and I'm back on my old 1080 which just looks like ass so I'm wanting to buy asap without doing deep dives into panel technologies. Last one was QHD 27" and I want to go a little larger, but I genuinely don't care about max Hz, I was meme'd into buying a high refresh one last time and ended up locking it to 60Hz most of the time. Cost isn't too much of a factor but if I'm not needing the bleeding edge in monitor tech I'd rather pay as little as possible for a 75Hz QHD with decent image quality than a 250Hz 8k monster. Also is curved and/or ultrawide a gimmick?

No as I bought that on launch and i'm not paying the premium aib models charged for a fairly negligible increase in performance which is achieved just by throwing power at the chip. The nitro is maybe 10% faster but eats 100w more.

>whos the deshrouded a 290x?
Sapphire tri-x. It actually turned out to be a near golden sample as it will run at 1200mhz (which is a monstrous 20% core OC) but goddamn does it need voltage and power to do it. For some benchmark runs it could handle 1215-1220mhz but I couldn't keep it stable and I don't think it can hold that any more after the abuse it took.

I happen to have two older SSDs, one is only 500gb and all I use it for is holding music, the other is an old WD Blue 2tb Sata M.2 drive and I use that for (mostly older or smaller) games as well to spread the load and save my main SSD from getting full.

>>
>>102212676
>to where?
To the HDD.
My basic understanding about SSD and HDD division is use the SSD for the OS and big games (in my case Windows, Linux and probably GTA IV or Cyberpunk), and HDD for everything else.
I don't know why but I probably assumed having Firefox, nomacs and co on my SSD would speed them up. I'd been working all day and not really clear-minded but now I doubt this has any effect at all.

>>102212670
So that makes no difference?
>>
>>102212753
No. X3D only makes sense when you're CPU bottlenecked and 13700k is already pretty fast
But if you want it for lower power draw, by all means go ahead

The X3D CPUs are slower than their equivalently priced non-X3D counterparts for pretty much anything except games. (please correct me if I'm wrong)
As I mentioned on my post, I plan to use my PC also for work (Virtualization, Docker, code compilation, etc).

And even for games, many times they fall into one of these 2 categories:
>modern/heavy games:
I'll most certainly be GPU bottlenecked playing at 4K.

>old/light games:
Any relatively modern CPU is more than capable of achieving framerates higher than the monitor/TV hz.

In both cases the X3D CPUs lose their advantage.

>>102212886
For modern games, playing at 4K will probably make you GPU bottlenecked, and not CPU. But check benchmarks.

After a power surge my pc won't turn on. I'm checking what died.
If I unplug everything from my current PSU except the motherboard, nothing happens.
If I plug an old PSU to the motherboard, the leds light up, so it seems like the motherboard isn't the issue. Both PSUs work when I do the paper clip power test.
Then I tried connecting the old PSU to my PC but it won't turn on, not even the motherboard. It lights up for half a second and then dies again. Maybe another component is fried, idk? I tried smelling stuff or checking if there's anything charred etc but I couldn't find any.

I have cleared cmos, reseated GPU about 4 times now and even tried to test a different PSU that for some reason won't power up the system. I'm gonna assume your GPU is still disconnected, otherwise it's probably taking priority from your CPU's iGPU (assuming your CPU has an iGPU).

Yes, you need at least a working CPU and RAM to get into the BIOS and that CPU power needs to be connected as well. Can't recall if some motherboards will still display something or if it'll just power on then off.

Try 1 stick of ram at a time and in different slots until you've tried them all or you get a display.

You could try to get the CPU out to check if the CPU or socket are burnt but I think you'd be able to smell if anything was burned. You could also use this opportunity to reseat the CPU, doubt this'll be the case but at least you can check it off the list.

Doubt you have a spare CPU for that socket but try swapping if you do. At this point it could be your MB or your CPU.
>>
just had a bit of a chat with the guys that work at my local pc hardware/building store and they told me they made a decision to never stock Radeon GPUs again because they give them too many headaches and get sent back all the time, that they don't last at all compared to Nvidia.

I was a bit taken aback since I've been wanting to change over because of Linux compatibility and generally not making any use of RT tech, is it likely they just got burned with a bad batch or what?

AMD have a well earned reputation for having extremely variable quality on their drivers going way back 20+ years ago to the 8500. In 2023 they bricked windows installs last year with a shitty driver and also got people banned in CS2 because of their drivers. If you're just one guy on your home system you might be okay with that. If you're a PC store, and you look at the current steam survey results.. Nvidia dominates it and has the top 30 discrete GPU's. AMD only have about a 10% market share of discrete GPU and their most used cards are the RX 580 which came out in 2017 and the RX 6600 which was 2021.
They probably got burned by one particular card generation from AMD and got a bunch of returns and went 'this is too much fucking work for cards that we don't sell many, don't make much profit on and that 90% of our customers don't care about".

Mindfactory records the RMA rates of every product they sell. I just took a quick look at some current gen cards and AMD are a little higher but it's like 3% vs. 2%. Hardly worth discontinuing an entire product line over.
Now with that said I don't think they're wrong on the whole. Putting AMD cards in normie PCs is risky because they have no marketshare. The General Publick™ /will/ fuck it up somehow. Installing Nvidia drivers or software, trying to use DLSS or RTX, and so on.
Not to say that AMD is blameless btw. IME their drivers are generally less stable and they have had hardware problems on some gens. If you're DIY-ing those can be acceptable tradeoffs for the better value - you and I know how to DDU but your average punter is just going to take it back to the shop. The thin margins and high labour costs for a smaller integrator change the equation.

yeah the card is toast );

it's a 6800xt that I've only had for about 2 years now and I was planning on upgrading with the 5000 series... might just coast on integrated graphics until then ):

thanks for the help
>>
>>102215747
Sounds like graphics card is dead. If it's under three years old, likely still within the warranty period if you have a Geforce card. Two years is standard for Radeon

>>102215581
Can be hard to figure out what the problem is without swapping components. Test the PSU on a different system if possible

>>102215366
For 4070 Super I'd say no, for 4070 Ti Super maybe, but still probably not. You can get good models of both for MSRP in the USA

It wasn't particularly interesting. The only thing I have to say is that we have it pretty good these days, without rendering errors all over the place. Also frametime consistency is a lot better on modern cards, adaptive sync is amazing compared to v-sync, etc.

I have an old PC with GTX 1060 and I want to upgrade the GPU. I want to use it mostly for playing older gayms from the Xbox360/PS3 and XboxOne/Ps4 era, and make them more pretty with shader injectors like Reshade, nothing new and fancy like Wukong: Monke. Since it's just 1080p and mostly older games where AI upscaling isn't available anyway, would an ATI card like a RX 7600 be a better option than Nvidia stuff like 3060 or 4060?
>>
>>102217108
if you're going to keep using this I suggest you remove the last two bits. complaining about ray tracing and being too poor for high end GPU's is just cope & no-one cares about shillware unboxed and their seething entitlement to free GPU's

Used 2060 Super
Especially on an old PC playing old games, Nvidia is the better option. For instance if you have a i7 4770 or something similar, you'll be CPU limited a lot by Radeon's DX11 driver
>>
>>102217343
7600 XT is maybe 10% better than a 4060, which is slightly better than a 7600, which is a decent chunk better than a 6600XT or 3060. Intels A770 is between a 7600 and a 3060.
From a 1050 though you'd get a massive boost in performance going as low as a 3050 or 2060 (although they are significantly lower performing than any of the cards I mention above). Even a 1660ti would be a huge improvement although only half the improvement you'd get from a 3050 and still significantly weaker than the 6600/3060 & above.
I would probably go for a 3060 or 2070 Super, as I prefer nvidia and those two cards are levels above the 3050/2060/1660ti/1070.

Do you actually need graphics power?
If not just get a used Dell Optiplex 7050 Micro with an i7 7700T, 16 GB RAM, and an SSD for under $200. If you're going to need a graphics card, the Dell XPS 8910 has a PSU capable of accepting 8-pin cards

My issue with it is the fact reviewers point out there's next to no room for cable management
