What is JXL useful for?

For coping.
PngGOD here btw

Why put so much effort into reinventing JPG instead of making PNG better at compression? What sin did PNG ever do?
>>
>>102438921
You're supposed to search for the best way to compress by using images where compression is most obvious
>>
Besides use cases that JPEG or lossless WebP could also fulfillI use it for HDR screenshots. The only other viable alternatives right now are PNG (way too large) and AVIF (no software support).

Making YouTube essays for midwit redditors and linux user tier people so they can feel they are intelligent despite never having even implemented a single image codec spec.
If your """modern""" codec can't leverage built in video decoder/encoder hardware you are throwing.

avif is very good at drawings and screenshots of av1 video, jpegxl is very good at pictures. the image is accurate, but doesn't paint a full picture

>AVIF (no software support)
AVIF is supposed by every browser, every image editing software, every relevant image viewer and every modern phone
>>
>>102439922
None of these both support HDR and render HDR AVIF correctly on Linux. mpv can do HDR, but HDR AVIF renders incorrectly. HDR JXL and PNG do not have this issue.

Sometimes but with certain parameters AVIF can compete with Jpeg XL in photographic images at or near visually lossless quality even with the default "fast" preset 6. It would be nice if the devs made parameters like these enabled by default through a "photo" preset option.

avifenc -d 8 -y 444 -s 6 -q 84 -j 1 \
--cicp 1/13/1 \ # sRGB mainly used by PNG/GIMP
-a qm-min=0 \ # Forces max quality ceiling in super blocks.
-a deltaq-mode=3 \ # Psychovisual augmentation + speed boost.
-a aq-mode=1 \ # Enables variance boost.
-a sharpness=2 \ # Sacrifices some efficiency for image clarity.

Ristretto does not seem to use HDR. In fact, it doesn't even seem to support color management, so it renders HDR AVIF, JXL and PNG alike all washed out, much like e.g. feh or ImageMagick's display.
